Ichthyosaurs from the Lower Lias (Lower Jurassic) of Banwell, Somerset ICHTHYOSAURS FROM THE LOWER LIAS (LOWER JURASSIC) OF BANWELL, SOMERSET M.A. TAYLOR 1 AND R.D. CLARK 2 Taylor, M.A. and Clark, R.D. 2016. Ichthyosaurs from the Lower Lias (Lower Jurassic) of Banwell, Somerset. Geoscience in South-West England, 14, 59–71. Two Lower Jurassic ichthyosaurs, lost in a 1940s air raid, are identified from archival records and surviving 19th century plaster casts distributed by their owner, the Bristol Institution for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts. One was the type specimen of Ichthyosaurus latimanus Owen, 1840. The other, initially labelled Ichthyosaurus intermedius Conybeare, 1822, was the first ichthyosaur in which remains of the soft tissue of the tail fin were identified, confirming Richard Owen’s earlier prediction. Unfortunately Owen’s published account conflated the two specimens, apparently by the erroneous transposition of a passage of text. Owen possibly regarded the second specimen as the type of I. intermedius. In 1889 Richard Lydekker referred it to Ichthyosaurus conybeari Lydekker, 1888. For unknown reasons, he caused further confusion by suppressing the fact that both ichthyosaur specimens came from Banwell. Banwell is shown to have been a minor but significant source of Lower Lias fossil vertebrates, and also the type locality of the fish Tetragonolepis monilifer Agassiz, 1837, apparently from quarries in the lowermost Jurassic beds at Knightcott. The Bristol Institution assisted Edward Wilson (1808–1888) to obtain at least some of the West Country marine reptiles which his brother Dr Thomas Bellerby Wilson (1807–1865) donated to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, U.S.A. -

Malacologico I Milano' 18 I (9-12) I 291-300 I settembre-dicembre 1982 Bruno Sabelli * e Stefano Tommasini * OSSERVAZIONI SULLA RADULA E SULLA PROTOCONCA DI BOLINUS BRANDARIS (L" 1758) E PHYLWNOTUS TRUNCULUS (L" 1758) Introduzione La sottofamiglia M u r i c i n a e comprende in Mediterraneo so- lo poche specie, per la precisione sei, di cui una (Bolinus cornutus (L., 1758)) segnalata solo dubitativamente per il nostro mare, due (Mu- rex tribulus L., 1758 e Aspella anceps (LAMARCK,1822)) sono ospiti re- centissimi essendo penetrati e forse acclimatati si in Mediterraneo so- lo dopo l'apertura del canale di Suez (BARASHe DANIN, 1972, 1977; GHI- SOTTI,1974) mentre le altre tre si possono definire come autoctone. Poichè le tre specie esotiche sono state reperite solo in numero esi- guo di esemplari e comunque mai viventi non si hanno informazioni sulla loro radula e sulla microscultura della loro protoconca e noi non siamo stati in grado di colmare questa lacuna. Per quanto con- cerne le altre tre specie Dermomurex scalaroides (BLAINVILLE,1826) è stato ampiamente investigato sotto il profilo tassonomico da FRAN- CHINI (1977) che ne ha anche illustrato la radula; mancherebbero co- munque dati sulla sua protoconca, ma gli oltre trenta esemplari esa- minati di questa specie non si sono prestati per questo studio essen- do tutti con l'apice abraso per cui la questione rimane insoluta. Solo le ultime due specie: Bolinus brandaris (L., 1758) e Phyllonotus trun- culus (L., 1758), sono dunque state studiate e se pur poco rappresen- tative dell'intera sottofamiglia presentano comunque alcuni interes- santi problemi che ci hanno indotto a redigere questa nota. -

Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study. -

The Bristol Dinosaur Project focuses on the fourth dinosaur ever named in the world, Thecodontosaurus, discovered in Bristol in 1834, and named in 1836. Living Seashells of the Tropical Indo-Pacific Photographic guide with 1500+ species covered Andrey Ryanskiy INTRODUCTION, COPYRIGHT, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS INTRODUCTION Seashell or sea shells are the hard exoskeleton of mollusks such as snails, clams, chitons. For most people, acquaintance with mollusks began with empty shells. These shells often delight the eye with a variety of shapes and colors. Conchology studies the mollusk shells and this science dates back to the 17th century. However, modern science - malacology is the study of mollusks as whole organisms. Today more and more people are interacting with ocean - divers, snorkelers, beach goers - all of them often find in the seas not empty shells, but live mollusks - living shells, whose appearance is significantly different from museum specimens. This book serves as a tool for identifying such animals. The book covers the region from the Red Sea to Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam.
