That instantly eliminates spurious car hire, injury and repair claims. With Smart Witness technology protecting you there should no longer be any 50/50 or ‘knock for knock’ claims,” he says. The camera digitally records the driver’s view onto SD cards providing operators with court- admissible evidence that protects against fraudulent claims and falsely accused driving offences. ASGK990 SERIES Regulation 73 compliant Whitchurch-based Grocontinental has been so impressed with the Smart Lateral Protection System Witness system that it is installing forward-facing cameras on its entire fleet when it renews its 62 vehicles in August. Grocontinental transport manager Chris Humphreys says that Grocontinental initially installed the Smart Witness cameras in September 2010 on the advice of its insurance broker Beaumonts Group: 11 73R-011005 “I’m 100% happy with Smart Witness: the E clarity of the pictures, the information we’re getting, it’s everything we would Grocontinental is to install on-board forward-facing want from a system…plus it’s cameras in its entire fleet maintenance-free,” says Humphreys. He says that he is impressed by how much information is available from the camera. “We knew that we would get the video footage but we were really surprised by the amount of information we receive…when we downloaded the memory card from the first incident we found we had the GPS, the motion sensor, a speed trace… we just didn’t realise how much information we were going to obtain from the camera.” Humphreys says the video evidence stops all insurance counter claims. “It stops all the to-ing and fro-ing of who’s to blame and obviously quickens the process from start to finish in processing the claim.” Humphreys also likes the fact that the cameras can lead complainants to retract or change their stories about Grocontinental’s vehicles. “I think we were in Melton Mowbray and a member of the public rang up and claimed that our driver had jumped a set of lights on a crossroads, and obviously impeded their path…and I said, ‘thank you very much, can you tell me what time this incident took place?’ and she told me and I said, ‘well, all our vehicles have got forward-facing cameras’. She instantly changed her story and said, ‘well, actually I don’t think he did quite jump the lights and I might have been slightly to blame as well’.” Humphreys says that the cameras are a positive move for both the drivers and the company. “Personally I’m an advocate of the cameras because they can protect the company and the driver. We’ve had a couple of incidents where we have been at fault…it helps us to understand why the incident took place so we can sit down with the driver and look at their speed and position on the road etc. “From a training and debriefing perspective, it’s second to none, if you didn’t have that Commercial Body Fittings Ltd detailed information then how could you analyse the incident? Invertec has launched a new lighting range for reefers. The Halo is an innovative light that offers operators more light and reduced running costs. The Halo light, designed and made in the UK, is a surface-mounted LED light with polycarbonate housing and an optional PIR sensor that switches on when it detects the temperature of a person entering the body. Ian King, sales director, Invertec, says: “Following extensive research into the commercial and refrigerated vehicle market, many drivers remarked that they found switched lighting inconvenient. “The Halo’s PIR sensor offers a solution for this in that it allows for convenient loading and unloading without the need for an on/off switch.” Objective: Other benefits are: • thermally regulated to boost operating life • waterproof housing Uptime • operates between -20°c and +50°c • 115° beam angle for broad light spread • vibration tested Trailer: • LED for low power consumption • maximum power savings. Cool Liner The LED technology inside the Halo light provides a crisp bright light that runs very efficiently in cold environments, the company says. As part of the development programme, Invertec conducted photometric light simulations for a standard trailer. The results showed an average of 65 lux on the floor with two Halos per trailer, 96 lux with three Halos per trailer and 128 lux with four Halos per trailer. A recessed version of the Halo is being developed and will be available soon. Invertec, which has made and supplied lighting solutions for commercial vehicles since 1980, is committed to developing innovative, quality products that are designed to meet ISO9000 standards and all European Directives, that maintain the safety and productivity of vehicles.
