Time has really flown, but this is what happens when you are having a great time. Looking back, I am feeling very proud on what we were able to achieve, on the finished work and the (sometimes unexpected) results that I can present in this thesis. It was an unforgettable experience in many ways and I enjoyed every minute of it. I could not have presented this work without the support of my VITO-promotor Leen Bastiaens. She has taught me so much, for example on seeing the bigger picture, improving my scientific approach, writing and her suggestion always increased the quality of my work. But what I enjoyed the most was our collaboration that was always friendly with a bit of humor on the side, the open door and the joint, open- minded discussions to the next steps. I am very grateful for her advice, the encouragement and support I received during the PhD and her ideas that made this PhD successful. The quality of this thesis was also considerably improved thanks to the comments and suggestion of my University promotor Stefano Sforza. I want to thank him for his critical view on my work and his advice during my research. In addition, I am also very grateful for the opportunity to divide my time between VITO and the University of Parma. I got a taste of food science and was able to enrich my knowledge for which I am very thankful. In general, I would like the thank both my promotors for giving me the opportunity for personal and scientific growth and for the time and patience in correcting and improving the thesis. This PhD would be more limited without the useful and interesting input of the InDirect partners. They made the challenges in the PhD more valuable and it was nice to see the whole value-chain, starting from the selection of feed, to rearing, to fractionation and eventually applications tests. For this, I would like to thank all partners. In addition, the thesis was also incorporated and funded by BBI-JU under EU- Horizon2020 research and innovation program under GA-No720715, for which I am thankful. Time also flies when you are having fun, and fun we had. The REC team consists of eight fantastic people who all encouraged and helped me to reach my goal. It is easy to stay motivated and enthusiastic when your co-workers are always their to lend a hand, make a joke and once in a while listen to your complains. In my opinion, a good team is the foundations for making something difficult work and I would like to thank all members of the REC team for being my foundation throughout the PhD. Next to this amazing team, I was lucky to also be part of a sub-team of other PhD’s. Within this small group, I could find a great deal of encouragement, support, valuable advice, lots of laughter and friendship. Lastly, I would like to thank my family, friends and especially Dries for their patience and encouragement. Thank you for all the late night dinners, the time spent to listen to some of my complaints but also me being really enthusiastic about something and not able to stop speaking about it, the support and understanding. Especially to my parents and sister, who have no scientific background whatsoever but still kept trying to understand what I was doing and were interesting in learning every detail of my work. The genus consists of two main elements, a northern temperate group of four species and a southern ternperate group of nine. The genus Metromerus Uvarov is synonymized with Calliptamus. The present paper includes notes on several Acrididae of definite Palaearctic affinities not previously reported from India, two of them new to science but belonging to a purely Palaearctic genus. It will be seen that the series comprises not only the Mediterranean faunistic elements (Oedipoda, Calliptamus), and those of the so.uthern Palaearctic steppes (Dociostaurus), but also much more northerly ones such as Chorthip pus and even Gomphocerus sibiricus, which is typical of the northernmost steppes and of the high mountains of Europe. Chorthippus almoranus sp. n. Fig. A small, robustly built and hirsute species with thick antennae, probably related to Ch. jacobsoni Ikonnikov from Russian Central Asia, and differing from it in longer elytra and in the shape of pro- notal carinae. (type). Antennae scarcely longer than head and pronotum, very stout ; middle joints not more than twice as long as wide. Face strongly oblique. Around a chott in the wetland complex in the high plains near Constan- tine (eastern Algeria), more than half of the species of plants are annuals that dry out in summer, a situation that prompted us to sample the vegetation in spring over a period of two years. Three zones were identifi ed based on an analysis of the vegetation and measurements of the salt content of the soils. Surveys carried out at monthly intervals over the course of a year revealed temporal and spatial variations in biodiversity and abundance of grasshoppers. The inner zone is colonized by halophilic plants and only one grasshopper species (Dericorys millierei) occurs there throughout the year.

    ARTICULATA 2010 25 (1): 59௅72 FAUNISTIK The Orthoptera communities of sub-Mediterranean dry grasslands (Aphyllanthion alliance) in the western Spanish Pyrenees Benjamin Krämer, Dominik Poniatowski, Luis Villar & Thomas Fartmann Abstract Sub-Mediterranean dry grasslands (Aphyllanthion alliance) are habitats with high biodiversity that have recently become threatened by abandonment of traditional management activities. Orthoptera communities are highly influenced by the spa- tial structure and thus indicate the quality of a habitat. The communities can be classified by the occurrence of characteristic Orthoptera species (regional "char- acter species" and/or "differential species" according to PONIATOWSKI & FART- MANN 2008). We studied the composition of these communities in 21 plots along an elevation gradient from 750 to 1150 m a.s.l. in the Aísa Valley, western Ara- gonese Pyrenees (Spain). We defined three Orthoptera communities: (i) a com- munity of herb- and grass-rich grasslands (type 1) with the character species Tessellana tessellata, (ii) a community of shrub-rich grasslands (type 2) with the character species Thyreonotus corsicus and Chorthippus binotatus binotatus and the differential species Stenobothrus lineatus and (iii) a community of rocky grasslands (type 3) with the character species Chorthippus b. binotatus and the differential species Oedipoda coerulea. Moreover, we analysed the ecological traits of the character and differential species: Tessellana tessellata prefers ho- mogenous, high and dense vegetation, while the occurrence of Thyreonotus cor- sicus and Stenobothrus lineatus depends on heterogeneous, vertically well- structured habitats with herbs and bushes. In contrast, optimal habitats of Oedi- poda coerulea are characterized by a high proportion of bare ground, and the occurrence of Chorthippus b.

The insects were captured with sweep net weekly from April to August 2016. It appears that 30 Grasshopper species belonging to 4 families and 11 subfamilies were identified amongst 712 individuals. Acrididae species (25) were the most frequent. The species richness was higher at medium altitude (23 species) and high altitude (22 species) than at low altitude (18 species). Species abundance distribution fitted the Broken stick model at low and high altitude while it fitted the Geometric or Motumura model at medium altitude. Grasshopper abundance increased with the altitude while diversity was not correlated with increasing altitude since diversity indices values were high in medium altitude. The EOsare extracted by hydrodistillation protocol based on the use of a Clevenger. It should be noted that the yield of EOs obtained at the flowering stage (2.2%) is almost double that obtained at the foliage stage (1.2%).Gas Chromatography coupled to a mass spectrophometerGC-MS analysis revealed the presence of p-Menth-4 (8) -en-3-one, as the most frequently constituents of Mint, better known as Pulegone. We performed two ways of treatments: by contact and by alimentation (the duration of treatment is 3and 6 days respectively). By contact we have acquired a total mortality (100%) using the highest dose (48μl/ml) with a LD50 of 12.58 μl/ ml. In the opposite, by ingestion, the mortality rate obtained for the same dose was 80%while the LD50 was23.98 μl/ ml. Using the letal doses, the comparative effect of contact and ingestion between the essential oils show that the action by contact is stronger and faster to enter in the insect via the cuticulethan that byingestion.

Antonatos1,2* and N.G. Emmanouel2 Summary The toxicity of various insecticides to nymphs and adults of Calliptamus barbarus barba- rus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) was studied in laboratory bioassays. The insecticides used were imidaclo- prid, spinosad, alpha cypermethrin, lambda cyhalothrin, difl ubenzuron and azadirachtin. Lambda cy- halothrin was used only in bioassays with adult grasshoppers whereas difl ubenzuron and azadirachtin were used only in bioassays with grasshopper nymphs. The insecticide with the most toxic eff ect on nymphs and adults of C. barbarus barbarus was spinosad followed by imidacloprid and alpha cyper- methrin. Ten days after treatment the mortalities obtained from those three insecticides were 98.5%, 89.1% and 81.3% in nymphs and 98.4%, 71.9% and 67.2% in adults, respectively. The toxicity of lamb- da cyhalothrin to the grasshopper adults was moderate, reaching 43.8% mortality ten days after their exposure. Difl ubenzuron and azadirachtin provided moderate and reduced level of mortality, respec- tively, to the grasshopper nymphs. The mortalities obtained from these insecticides ten days after treatment were 53.1% and 29.7%, respectively. The same pattern was observed for the lethal time with spinosad having the most rapid action. Presa Summary The courtship behaviour and sound production of Calliptamus wattenwylianus Pantel, 1896 (Orthoptera, Catantopinae) has been studied for the first time. Ten behavioural units (BUs) have been established. Three different types of sound produced by males (male alone, chorus or interaction and courtship) as well as the sound produced by females have been recorded and analyzed. Behavioural data point to an active attitude of males and a passive one of females during in- tersexual relationships. Obtained results are compared with those from literature on other species of genus Calliptamus (C. italicus, C. barbarus and C. plebeius). Although all the species display and use in a more or less similar way the same BUs, some differences found in the whole behaviour or in some of its elements, as well as in the sound emitted, point to the possibility of the reproductive behav- iour is acting as a reproductive barrier, especially among sympatric species. Zusammenfassung Erstmalig wurde das Balzverhalten und die Stridulation von Calliptamus watten- wylianus Pantel, 1896 (Orthoptera, Catantopinae) untersucht. Es wurden zehn Verhaltenselemente differenziert. Drei verschiedene Gesangstypen der Männ- chen (Spontangesang, Wechsel-/Rivalengesang und Balz) sowie die Stridulation der Weibchen wurden aufgenommen und analysiert. Das beobachtete Paa- rungsverhalten deuten auf eine aktive Rolle der Männchen und eine eher passive der Weibchen hin. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse wurden mit Literaturangaben zu anderen Arten der Gattung Calliptamus (C. italicus, C. barbarus and C. ple- beius) verglichen. Demnach zeigen alle diese Arten mehr oder weniger ähnliche Verhaltenselemente.
