ABSTRACT

This study entitledDeconstruction Analysis of Characters in Movie Script Zootopia. This study discussed about Deconstruction of Character which aimed to deconstruct the opposition of major and minor characters in the movie script Zootopia, and also devalue the major and minor characters to be the new hierarchy. This research is based on the Deconstruction theory proposed by Jacques Derrida (Rodalphe Gasche : 1988), which systematize the steps in doing deconstruction analysis from the identifying the opposition hierarchy in the text that systematically privileged, then change or reverse that hierarchy, and the last was introduced a new term or idea, which apparently cannot be included in the page of old hierarchy category. The method used in this study was the descriptive qualitative method. The result of this research is uncovering the deeply complex foundation that is difficult to make sense, because there is no general truth or the permanent personality of each character, there will be the other side of character that can produced a new hierarchy.

ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini berjudul Deconstruction Analysis of Characters in Movie Script Zootopia..

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Literature is an art of written works. Literature is writing that is considered

to be an art form or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual

value. Wellek and Waren (1985:4) quoted ―Literature as one of the imaginary

works, literature performs various problem of human and humanity, and the life‖.

Literature is not just a document of facts, it is not just the collection of real events

thought it may happen in the real life. Literature can create its own world as a

product of the unlimited imagination, and alsoit represents the life which may

occur in the social reality.

According to Taylor (1981) Literature can be divided into three genres,

such as : (1) Novel a work of prose fiction written in the narrative, usually in the

form of stories), (2) Poetry (expresses a conversation or interchange that is

grounded in the most deeply felt experiences of human being. (3) Drama,

literature designed to be performed by actors who played works of art among the

players orally or dialogue. So, drama deals with important elements that build the

story itself. All of these elements take their own role to make the story sensible.

Literature has many works such as novel, poetry, prose, movie script, and

many more. In this study, the writer uses movie script as the subject of study.

Schank&Abelson (1977) mentioned ―Script is an autonomous literary work, or

merely the translation into movie language of drama a pre-existant literary work

(novel, story, play)‖. So, it means that, in literary work, movie script is the part

of drama, because drama is a literary text represented a written or spoken text 1

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

(dialogue) intended for reading or performing on the stage and subject to textual analysis

A screenplay or movie script is a written work by for a film, television program or video game. According to Longman Dictionary (Pearson

Longman : 2014), script in literarture is the written form of a speech, play, and film (screenplay). These screenplays can be original works or adaptations from existing pieces of writing. It contains the movement, actions expression and dialogues of the characters are also narrated.

The title of this study is deconstruction analysis of characters in movie script Zootopia. The story tells about the life in Zootopia city, it describes a mammal metropolis where animals from every environment live and thrive together – a place where no matter what you are, from the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. This story stars from the little Judy Hopps as the major character, has a dream to be a police officer in the ZPD (Zootropolis

Police Department). She is bunny who lives on the outskirts of the city in

Bunnyburrow. When Judy Hops becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determind to prove herself,

Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. It is the fourteen predator animals go missing.

The slogan of Zootopia, where all animals are united in diversity has

changed to be fear, and there is no harmony in the city anymore because the act

of new mayor Zootopia, Dawn Bellwether, as a minor character who has two

faced character. But, after doing some investigations, Judy finally knows the

effect of the savage animals. Partnering with a smooth talking fox named 2

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Nick Wilde,as the major character aslo. Judy must piece together all the clues as

to where the predators are and who is behind it all. Finally, the doctor discovers

a cure for the predator who has been infected with the night howler toxic.

Zootropolis begin to recover, and Judy returns to the police force and Nick joins

too.

Character is the fictitious person portrayed in the work of literature.

Character has the role to run the story from the beginning until the end of the story. According to Taylor (1981), ―Thesimplest way to describe characterization in the story is by giving a name of figure. Each appellation is a kind of animating individuation; the names are taken from Bible, characteristic of allegory‖. It means that character is important part in built a story which has function to play a story and to convey the ideas, motive, plot, and theme as the key point to understand the story and its conflict as a whole. Characters in fiction can be conveniently classified as major and minor. A major character is an important figure at the center of the story‘s action or theme. While, the minor character refers to support the major in order to illuminate the major characters,

(Nurgiyantoro : 2000).

The writer is interesting to use the story of Zootopia because this is the best animated movie in 2017. It is proved by some award received by this movie.

This movie has won some appreciations as one of the highest-grossing animated film which won the best Disney Animation at the 44th Annie Award 2017. This animation won six categories at once, which is consisted of Best Animated

Feature, Directing in an Animated Feature Production, Voice Acting in an

Animated Feature Production, Writing in an Animated Feature Production,

3

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production, and Character Design in an

Animated Feature Production. The writer also interesting to analyse this study because the deconstruction theory can be found in the major and minor characters of Zootopia movie script, so it shows another fact in literary work not only in a real story but also another side implicitly. This study will show another side or contradictive description from both characters implicitly.

In this study, the writer would like to describe or analyze the major and minor characters based on the perspective of Jacques Derrida in the script

Zootopia. Based on the book The Train of the Mirror : Derrida and the

Philosophy of Reflectionby Rodalphe Gasche (1988). He has tried to systematize the steps in doing deconstruction.Firstly, the writer has to collect or find out the major and minor characters in the selected quotations or dialogues from the script. After all of the data are founded, writer has to classify and identify every character (hierarchy) which are included in deconstruction context. Then, after all of the characters are identified, the writer deconstructs that major and minor characters, or reverse the hierarchy. After that, the writer finds and introduced a new term or hierarchy based on the text. After all of the steps to deconstruct the characters has done, the writer will find out the inconsistency or a deeply complex foundation that is difficult to make sense in our daily life.

The theory of deconstruction refers as post-structuralism because it built based on the concept of semiotic strructuralism proposed by Ferdinand de

Saussure by opposing and break the concept. Posmodernism is the cultural change (from the life style to mindset) which occurs because the development of science and information of technology. Through some philosopher,

4

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

posmodernism demands the changes in scientific activities, subjectivity and objectivity aspects, social – history aspect, language paradigm, and also the conceptual framework. Posmodernism also critics the structuralism approach which use the objective meaning in the text or to analyse the text.

One of the most famous critics is Jacques Derrida.According to Derrida,

Deconstruction is an alternative to reject all limitations of interpretation or standard conclusions. The Deconstruction concept (Christopher Norris : 2003), starts with the concept of demystification, the dismantling of rational thought products that believe in the purity of reality is basically intended to eliminate the structure of understanding the signs (signifier) through the formulation of a signified. In theory, he finds the conception never builds the meaning of signs in a pure way, because all signs always contain other articulations. From here we can see Derrida's relationship, especially its deconstruction, with structural linguistics.

Derrida's deconstruction is a denial of opposition to speech / writing, existing / nothing, pure or tainted, and finally rejection of the single truth or logos itself.

According to Derrida, writing can be seen in other ways, that is the preconditions of languages that existed before oral speech. Because of that, writing can be called ―special‖ than speech. Writing is a form of free play with elements of language and communication. It is the process of meaning changing continiously and this change puts itself beyond the reach of absolute truth (logos).

Derrida express that meaning is created through play of difference (Derrida: 1967) in Writing and Difference book. Language no longer has a definite and stable representational relationship to "reality", but, language is slippery and ambiguous.

There is always a gap between signed and signifier, between text and meaning.

5

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

This gap caused the search for absolute meaning is impossible to do. Because

after the truth is found, there is still another trace of truth behind it

This study uses the method of qualitative descriptive because the sourceof

data is direct from the Zootopia movie script or screenplay. Moleong (1995: 2)

states that descriptive qualitative research is defined as the qualitative research, a

type of research which does not include any calculation or enumerating.

Qualitative data is usually formed in words rather than numbers. They are the

source of well-grounded, rich descriptions and explanations of processes in

identifiable contexts. Descriptive qualitative research is a method in researching

the status of a group of people, an object with the aim of making descriptive,

image or painting in a systematic, factual and accurate about the facts or

phenomena that are investigated.

1.2 Problems of the Study

Based on the background of study above, so the problem that would be

analyzed has been formulated as follow :

1. How arethe deconstruction of major and minor charactersportrayed in

theZootopia movie script?

2. How are the deconstruction of major and minor characters devalued to be

the new hierarchy ?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

Based on the problem formulation above, this study aims to:

1. To describedeconstruction of major and minor charactersportrayed in the

Zootopiamovie script.

6

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

2. To describe the deconstruction of major and minor characters devalued to

be the new hierarchy.

1.4 Scope of the Study

There are many aspects that can be analyzed in this topic. But, in this study,

the writeronly focusses on the major and minor characters which using

deconstruction theory proposed by Jacques Derrida in the script of Zootopiaby

Jared Bush, Phil Johnston.

The writer describes the deconstruction analysis based on theselected quotations

or dialogues from the script

1.5 Significances of the Study

The findings of this study are expected to be beneficial theoritically and

practically.

1.5.1 Theoretically

The result of the study is expected to increase an overview of

researcher in order to enhance the understanding about deconstruction

theoryby Jacques Derrida that can be used as an input or reference for the

next study.

1.5.2 Practically

This reserach is expected to generate the information that can be

usedas the reference in the literary work and additional knowledge for

students of English Department who have interest towards the study of

Deconstruction.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Movie Script. .

Literature has many works such as novel, poetry, prose, movie script, and

many more. In this study, the writer uses movie script as the subject of study.

Script is an autonomous literary work, or merely the translation into movie

language of drama a pre-existant literary work such as novel, story, play

(Schank&Abelson: 1977). So, it means that, in literary work, movie script is the

part of drama, because drama is a literary text that represents a written or spoken

text (dialogue) intended for reading or performing on the stage and subject to

textual analysis. Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in

performance on television. Drama is described as a genre within the respective

media. Drama deals with important elements that build the story itself. All of

these elements take their own role to make the story sensible

A screenplay or movie script is a written work by screenwriters for a

film, television program or video game. According to Longman Dictionary

(2014), script in literarture is the written form of a speech, play, and film

(screenplay). These screenplays can be original works or adaptations from

existing pieces of writing. It contains the movement, actions expression and

dialogues of the characters are also narrated.

The major components are action and dialogue. The action is written in

the present tense and is limited to what can be heard or seen by the audience, for

example descriptions of settings, characters movements, or sound effects.

The dialogue is the words of characters speak, and is written in a center 8

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

column. The elements of the screenplay consist of scene headings, action,

transitions, dialogue, character names, shots and parenthetical matter should be

presented on the page, as well as font size and line spacing.

In script, scenes are vital in sequencing or separating the narration or

story into manageable parts for the audience, the actors, and the people working

behind the performance. The division of the performance is also important to

have a good flow of the narration or story itself. The scene is visible in the

screenplay or script form, for instant the scene headings are styled with capital

letters in order to have a visual and distinct separation of one progression to

another for the actors as well as the other people involved.

2.2 Character

Character is the fictitious person portrayed in the work of literature. The

characters in a literary work usually are imagination, It is also one of the

instrinsic elements of drama which has an important role to build up the story

and the character in the story will live to be understood and enjoyed by the

readers. Stanton in Nurgiyantoro (2000: 165) stated ―the characterization is the

image of characters in the story which is showed by interest attitude, longing,

emotion, moral principle that is belonged by those characters‖. So, the character

itself has the role to run the story from the beginning until the end of the story.

The character in fiction is portrayed by an author in words. An author

attempts to create the character who can give the influence to the readers by

giving the action which is done by the character or giving any impression to the

character‘s mind. Through the description of character, the author shares his

9

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

experience or his idea and it also help the readers to understand the auhor‘s intent.

According to Abrams in his book A Glossary of Literary Terms (1999 :

190 – 191) mentions that character are the persons represented in a dramatic or narrative work, whoa are interpreted by the reader as being endowed with particular moral, intellectual, and emotional qualities by inferences from what the persons say and their distinctive ways of saying it (dialogue) and from what they do (action). The grounds in the characters temperament, desire, and moral nature for their speech and actions are called their motivation.

Every character has theirown personalites. Character is one of the most important tools available to the author. Authors take an indirect approach by indicating how their characters look and act, what they think and say, how they live and how other characters regard them. Nurgiyantoro (2000) also mentioned that Character can be divided into major and minor character. Major character refers as the actors which appear the most in the story and always have connection with other actors. The major characters are the most dominant told in the story either do an action. The major character in the story could be more than one in the different major quality.

While, minor character refers as the actors who have part in supporting the story. The presence of the peripheral characters in whole story is smaller.

In other words, minor characters in the whole story are limited and they are usually only related to the main characters.

10

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

According to Robert (1993 : 20) characters are the persons presented in dramatics of narrative work, who are interpreted by reader as being endowed with the moral and dispositional qualities that are expressed in what they say and what they do in action. Robert and Jacobs states there are five ways, how the writer presents the character and this ways will help the reader to recognize the character.

1. Action

Action may also qualities such as weakness, deceit, strong, inner

conflicts and scheming of personality. Action of character is the best way to

understand knowing who they are or recognize the character

2. Descriptions both persoanal and environmental

Besides reveal much about a character‘s social and economic status,

appearance and environment also tells the readers more about the character

trait.

3. Dramatic statement and thoughts

Character uses speech to hide their motives. The function of speeches

to the characters is essential to keep the story moving along, then provides

the material from which the reader can draw conclusion

4. Statements by other characters

The characters usually say something about each others. It can be the

goodness, abdness, selfishness, foolishness about the others. It makes the

reader understand the character and the reader can enhance our

understanding of the character being discussed

11

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

5. Statements by the author speaing as story teller or observer

What the author says about a character is usually accurate because the

author is one who creates the character. For this reason, authors frequently

avoid interpretations and devote their skill to arrange events and speeches so

that readers may draw their own conclusion

2.3 Postmodernism

Postmodern literature is literature characterized by reliance on

narrative techniques such as fragmentation, paradox, and the unreliable narrator,

and it is also defines as a style or a trend which emerged in the post – Wolrd

War II era. Postmodern works are seen as a response against dogmatic following

of Enlightenment thinking and Modernist approaches to literature. Postmodern

literature refers to postmodernism which tends to resist defenition of

classification as a ―movement‖. However, works are considered postmodern

tend to engage with various modes of critical theory, particularly reader –

response and deconstructionist approaches, as well as ways of subverting the

implicit contract between author, text and reader.

According to Kellner (1980 : 1-2), ―The postmodern period has arrived,

and culturalintellectuals, artists, and entrepreneurs are confused, wondering,

should they take part in the ride and take part in the excitement or should they

sit on the side of the road waiting until the new method disappears culturally‖.

So, from the statement, we can know that experts want to show how much we

need to change the paradigm of thinking at this time. This change is not only

expressed by the philosopher and socio-cultural scientists, but also scientists in

the natural sciences field. This new scientific paradigm is needed to understand

12

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

the new phenomenon that is currently developing. fragmented, ambiguous, erratic world problems, blurring the boundaries of reality, blurring intercultural boundaries, etc. Since the , the use of term postmodern in the scientific world has been commonly used.

In postmodernism, language is seen not only as denotative, language is not only important with its logical functions, but also stands language at the center (linguistic turn). The discussion of language also relates to how the relationship between reasoning, meaning, truth, and language. Post-structuralism looks language as a dynamic sign system. Language and structure are the result of social construction, because of that there is no similarity between language, mind, and reality.

Postmodernism considers aspects of subjectivity, objectivity, socio- cultural aspects, aspects of language, paradigms, and conceptual frameworks (all of which play a role in developing science). Postmodernism also criticizes structuralism approaches that crave the objective meaning of text in text analysis. Therefore, postmodernism leaves the structuralism approach and replace it with a post-structuralism approach that provides freedom of interpretation. Because of the involvement of objects and subjects in the development of science, postmodernism recognizes the influence of socio- historical factors on the subject, namely the wealth of someone's vocabulary in understanding and interpreting the plurality of scientific paradigms. Then, the truth of science is no longer singular, not fixed, but plural and changing, and developing in line with the development of human culture

. 13

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

2.4 Deconstruction

The term of Deconstruction came from the French "Deconstruire"

which means to dismantle the machine, but unpack it to be reinstalled.

Therefore, deconstruction means positive because it disassembles and overturns

the meaning of the text, but not with the aim of just dismantling it, but

dismantling the text or new discourse with new meanings that are different from

the text that is deconstructed. (Akhyar Yusuf : 2014)

Deconstruction, form of philosophical and literary analysis, derived

mainly from work begun in the 1960s by the French philosopher Jacques

Derrida, that‘s questions the fundamental conceptual distinctions, or

―oppositions,‖ in Western philosophy through a close examination of the

language and logic of philosophical and literary texts.Literary texts possess

meaning and literary criticism seeksthe knowledge of that meaning.

The oppositions challenged by deconstruction, which have been

inherent in Western philosophy since the time of the ancient Greeks, were

characteristically ―binary‖ and ―hierarchical‖, involving a pair of terms in which

one member of the pair is assumed to be primary or fundamental, the other

secondary or derivative. To ―deconstruct‖ an opposition is to explore the

tensions and contradictions between the hierarchical ordering assumed

(explicitly asserted) in the text and other aspects of the text‘s meaning.

According to Norris (2003: 9 - 12) From the Saussure methodology,

language can be seen from the structuralism because thesystem of differences,

and the core of this system of differences is binary opposition.

14

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

The content of this binary opposition is opposition between signified/signifier, speech/writing, and langue/parole. This opposition in linguistics goes hand in hand with the same thing in the tradition of Western philosophy, namely meaning/forms, soul/body, transcendental/immanent, good/bad, right/wrong, etc. In this binary opposition, the first terms are superior than the second.

In Saussure's linguistics, there is a privilege of speech and insulting of writing.

The relation of Derrida between his deconstruction theory and structural linguistics can be seen directly. Deconstruction which is developed by Derrida is denial of opposition to speech/writing, existing /non-existent, pure/tainted, and finally rejection of the single truth (logos) itself (Norris : 2003). According to

Derrida, writing can be seen in other ways, that is the preconditions of languages that existed before oral speech. Because of that, writing can be called ―special‖ than speech. Writing is a form of free play with elements of language and communication. It is the process of meaning changing continiously and this change puts itself beyond the reach of absolute truth (logos). Through the process of thinking, and writing, Derrida sees language as thesystem of difference.

Difference is the French word, comes from the word differer, which means "different" and simultaneously―deferred‖. Derrida express that meaning is created through play of difference (Derrida: 1967) in Writing and Difference book. If the process of difference is connected with linguistics - structural

Saussurean, it refers to rejection of the existence of absolute markers or

―absolute meanings‖. Thus, language no longer has a definite and stable representational relationship to "reality", but language is slippery and

15

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

ambiguous. There is always a gap between signed and signifier, between text and meaning. This gap caused the search for absolute meaning is impossible to do. Because after the truth is found, there is still another trace of truth behind it.

Deconstuction can be applied when it is dealing with the text. It can be found in the book The Train of the Mirror : Derrida and the Philosophy of

Reflection by Rodalphe Gasche : 1988. He has tried to systematize the steps in doing deconstruction, as follows:

1. Identify the opposition of hierarchy in the text, where it is usually found

which terminology is systematically privileged or not

2. Change or reverse the hierarchy in the text

3. Introduce a new term or idea, which apparently cannot be included in the

page of old hierarchy category.

Indeed at the beginning, deconstruction is the method of reading text. But, with the steps of deconstruction above, the method of reading in deconstructive will be different from ordinary reading. The method of ordinary reading is always looking for the truth meaning of the text, but deconstructive readings only want to find the unknowing or failure of each text against a single truth, it just wants to subvert or riverse the hierarchical structure that structured the text.

2.5 Previous Findings

There are some previous studies conducted by other researchers as

follows:

Lia Fadhilah (2010) focused onDeconstruction Analysis on Major

Female Character in Film Destiny of Her Own. The researcher focuses on the

analysis ofthe character using Jacques Derrida`s Deconstruction Theory. The

study concernson the deconstructed feminist characteristic of the major female

character in ADestiny of Her Own Movie. The researcher used qualitative

descriptive analysisto analyze the relationship between the main character,

deconstruction, andfeminism. The researcher found that Veronica is a

determined woman. In anotherview, using deconstruction theory the study

identifies some differences aboutVerinica characteristic which is deconstructed

are decisive and independent.

Gani (2011) in his thesis entitled ―Deconstructive analysis in Dr.

AngSweeChap‘s perspective on the novel From Beirut to Jerusalem‖. The

researcher focused onanalyzing the conflict in the novel by using

deconstructive analysis. On his thesis,he used descriptive qualitative method

on his research. On his research, he foundthat there are two kinds of conflict

happened in the novel. The first one is internalconflict which is the fighting

between Amal (Lebanese) with Palastinewhich iscaused by provocateurs

from Israel. The second one is external conflict, economical conflict. Israel

wants to arrogate the land of Palastine.

17

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Syafriany (2014)in her thesis ―Deconstruction on Feminism in Arthur

Golden`s Geisha‖. The study aimed to find out of the meaning of a true

Geisha. The implication of this research is that, in deconstructing the text, we could use our own interpretation to describe the text itself. This research found that some meaning from a true Geisha based on the Novel.

We can see that a true Geisha is very different from the prostitute. Moreover, we also can see the meaning of Geisha which is deconstructed in the Novel between the common meanings of the interpretation of Arthur as the author.

Having compared those three previous findings above, there are thesimilarities and the differences. The similarities between three previous findingsabove lie in the theory used, Deconstruction theory. While the difference of thisresearch from the first previous finding is the movie, Fadhila

(2010) analyzedFilm Destiny of Her Own, while the researcher will analyze

Zootopia Movie Scrip. Thesecond finding is that Gani (2011) focused on analyzing the conflict in the novel, while the researcher will analyze the characters in Zootopia Movie Script. Besides that,Syafriany (2014) analyze the meaning of a true Geisha, while the researcher willdescribe the major and minor characters deconstruction portrayed in the Zootopia movie script.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

3.1 Research Design

In research, the researcher should has the design to make it easy in

analyzing the data. A research design is a plan or strategy for conducting the

research. It is required to get dependable and useful information. According to

Ary et.al (1985 : 21) ― Research may be defined as the application of the

scientific approach to the study of a problem‖. It means that research is

required to look for the answer related to the problem which want to be solved.

In this study, the researcher will find out the answer of the case study in order

to explain the deconstruction analysis of characters described in the movie

script ―Zootopia‖.

This research uses the descriptive qualitative design as the method of

study. Moleong (1995: 2) states that descriptive qualitative research is defined

as the qualitative research, a type of research which does not include any

calculation or enumerating. Qualitative data is usually formed in words rather

than numbers. They are the source of well-grounded, rich descriptions and

explanations of processes in identifiable contexts. Miles & Huberman (1994:

10) add that with qualitative research, someone can preserve chronological

flow and see precisely which events led to consequences and derive faithful

explanation. Descriptive qualitative research is a method in researching the

status of a group of people, an object with the aim of making descriptive,

image or painting in a systematic, factual and accurate about the facts or

phenomena that are investigated

19

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Neuman (1997:331) classified six characteristics of a qualitative research: a. The importance of context.

Qualitative researchers emphasize the importance of social context for understanding the social world. They hold that the meaning of a social action or statement depends, in an important way, on the context in which it appears.

When a researcher removes an event, social action, answer to a question, or conversation from the social context in which it appears, or ignore the context, social meaning and significance are distorted. b. The case study method.

The researchers might gather a large amount of information on one or a few cases, go into greater depth, and get more details on the cases being examined. c. The researcher‘s integrity.

The researchers ensure that their research accurately reflects the evidence and have checked on their evidence. d. Grounded theory.

A qualitative researcher begins with a research question and little else.

Theory develops during the data collection process. This more inductive method means that the theory is built from data or grounded in the data. e. Process.

Qualitative researchers look at the sequence of events and pay attention to what happens first, second, and so on. Because qualitative researchers examine the same case over time, they can see an issue involve, a conflict

20

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

emerges, or a social relationship develop. The researcher can detect process and casual relations. f. Interpretations.

The data are in the form of a word, including quotes or descriptions of particular events. The researcher interprets data by giving them meaning, translating them, or making them understandable

3.2 Data and Source of Data

The data will be taken from the quotationsof major and minor characters to find out or explain the deconstruction analysis describes in the Movie script.

The source of data in this reserach is the movie script of Zootopia namely

Original Screenplay, which is written by Jared Brush, Phil Johnston.

3.3 Data Collection

In collecting data, the researcher will need the data and data source.

Firstly, the researcher starts with getting the script of Zootopia as the source of data, then read it over and over until the writer understands the story well. Then the researcher collected the data from the short story

The data of this research will be taken from thedialogues in the movie script. The data only focused onthe quotations of eachcharacters that has a deconstruction analysis. The quotations that are categorized as data is quotations that contains lots of deconstruction analysis.

21

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

3.4 Technique of Data Analysis

The research design that will be coherently available in analyzing

certain data from the scipt to support this analysis is descriptive qualitative

method. The data will be analyzed based on the chart of method that can be

summarized in the pattern below

Source of Data RESEARCHER Movie Script of Zootopia

Method : Data selected – Interpreted Qualitative Desciptive - Anaysis

In the study of characters through deconstuction analysis in the movie script of Zootopia, an elaboration of reserach design should be arrange to support the statement that will be written in this research. By using descriptive qualitative method, the resercher will analyze the data based on the steps above.

22

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

The first step is read the text or script ―Zootopia‖ by Jared Brush, Phil

Johnston as the source of data. Then collecting the data by find out the characters, consist of major and minor character in the quotations or dialoguesfrom the script.

Then, in data collecton, the researcher has to select, classify, and identify every characters (hierarchy) which are included in deconstruction context, or founded has the privilege. Then, the researcher deconstruct that major and minor characters, or reverse the hierarchy. After that, the researcher finds and intoduce a new term or hierarchy based on the text. And the last, the researcher will find out the analysis, result, and conclusion of the study. The researcher will know the result of this study about inconsistency or a deeply complex foundation that is difficult to make sense in our daily life.

CHAPTER IV

DATA ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS

4.1 Analysis

In this chapter, the writer will present findings and data analysis toward

major and minor characters in the movie script Zootopia, where both of them

will show the result of the research. There are two points that the writer want to

analyze. Firstly howare the deconstruction of major and minor characters

portrayed in the Zootopia movie script. Second is how arethe deconstruction of

major and minor characters devaluedto be the new hierarchy.

In the first problem, the writer focusses on the deconstruction of major and

minor characters portrayed in Zootopia movie script. In this script, the major

character is described as a rabbit named Judy Hopps and a fox named Nick

Wilde. While the minor character is described as a sheep named Dawn

Bellwether. Based on the script, the writer would like to analyze or identify the

opposition hierarchy between major and minor characters in the script, where it

is usually found which terminology is systematically privileged or not. Then,

Change or reverse all of the hierarchy in the text.

Then, in the second problem, the writer focusses on the deconstruction of

major and minor characters devalued to be the new hierarchy. Based on the

script, the writer would like to analyze other contradiction between hierarchical

of the nature character to the new hierarchy. Here, the writer can find out other

characterization from both major and minor characters in the text.

24

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Althought, the writer has find out each character at the beginning, but all of the

characters are described in both major and minor characters are not permanent.

They can still change or reverse in the last of story, then produce a new

hierarchy or personality of character

25

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

4.1.1.1. Deconstruction Analysis of Judy Hoops as Major character

a. Coward >< Brave

The personality of Judy at the beginning is identificated in the Zootopia

script as the coward animal, especially to the predator. It is described when Judy

and her friends doing a show in Bunyburrow, it‘s called Carrot Days Talent

Show.

―A Bunny nervously walks through the dark, foreboding forest, frightened by every shadow and moving leaf. The timpanicrescendos. A Jaguar leaps out of the shadows, attacks the bunny‖.[SCENE 1 – Carrot Days Talent Show].

Judy conveys that thousands of years ago, there were the forces that ruled

their world. The world was devided into two, they were vicious paredator and

meek prey. That was a world where prey were scared of predators, and predators

had an uncontrollable biological urge to hurt and persecute. So, Judy describes

herself as the coward figure there. She runs when predator comes closer to kill

her and her friend, a sheep. They are as the meek prey also afraid to the

predators.

The deconstruction analysis of Judy Hopps shows the opposition of the

hierarchy, that is opposition of Judy‘s character as the coward figure. It shows

that Judy is a brave figure. It can be proved in the table of 4.1.2.1, there are some

quotations that show Judy is a brave figure in some different scene.

―You don‘t scare me Gideon‖. Judy kicks Gideon in the face with her hind legs. He stumbles back, thenchecks his lip for blood. [SCENE 2 : Judy Confront Gideon].

I'm not leaving. This is a crime scene.[SCENE 19 – Tundratown Limo Service].

26

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Judy jumps to a lamp post and spins on it to escape, but the slippery floor makes her slip over the edge and she grabs on. Judy has handcuffed the leg of Manchas to a post. [SCENE 22 – The Chase in the Rainforest District]

Firstly when Judy fights to Gideon Grey, she charges toward the danger,

Judy dared to challenge Gideon. She did it because she saw her friend being intimidated by predators. When both of them are fighting, Judy succesfully whips the tickets from Gideon althought he does not realize it. Then, in the

Bullpen, when Judy attends the first meeting in the ZPD office, she is not afraid to see all of hippo, elephant, etc. In the other case, Judy finds the evidence in the Mr. Big car, the most feared crime boss in Tundratown. And Judy does not want leaving, she wants to interview the boss and also the lion, as the driver.

b. Underestimated >< Reliable

Judy Hopps is a rabbit is well-known as the species that are small, funny, smooth and adorable, so it is not related with an occupation that has a high risk like an officer. Consequently, Judy always gets doubt and underestimated by others around her, because her dream seemed impossible

Bunny cop !That is the most stupidest thing I ever heard. [SCENE 1 – Carrot Days Talent Show]

What your father means, hun, it's gonna be difficult, impossibleeven, for you to become a police officer [SCENE 2– Judy Confronts Gideon]

Scorching sandstorm! You're dead, bunny bumpkin. [SCENE 3 – The Zootopia Police Academy].

You'll never be a real cop. You‘re a cute meter maid, though. Maybe a supervisor one day. Hang in there! [SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts to Arrest Nick]

27

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

In Judy‘s childhood, she is as a meek prey who always underestimated and unappreciated because of her small body and she is known a weak animal. So, when she conveys her dream to be police officer, nobody believes it, even her parents. She is underestimated by a fox and said that Judy‘s dream is the stupidest thing that he heard. While her parents, they try to persuade Judy gives up to her dream. As the tradition of Hopps family, there‘s never been a bunny cop. Then, Judy goes to the police academy of Zootopia to find out how the way to be an officer. But, in some test, she always failed, such as scorching sandstorm, swings but she falls off in the mud, sprint and dig into the ice wall, and failed while fight with big bison. Then, when Judy moves to the Zootopia,

Chief Bogo, as the police chief still does not believe to the Judy‘s ability. So, he puts Judy as a parking duty. And a fox named Nick also said that Judy will never be a real cop, but she has to be meter maid.

Nevertheless, Judy uses her opposers as a means to increase her determination and became progressively more insistent on reaching her goals.

The more others are underestimated her, the more strong her desire to make her dream come true. And Judy can prove it that she can be relied on and a proud figure. She can broke the words of others who doubt and underestimate her by an achievement.

I popped the weasel!.[SCENE 12 – The Case in Little Rodentia]

Ladies and gentle-mammals, fourteen mammals went missing, and all fourteen have been found by our newest recruit, who will speak to you in a moment. [SCENE 28 – Judy’s Interview]

28

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

As the quotations above, it shows Judy is the reliable figure. Judy managed to catch a weasel thief and bring it directly to the police station. Although she is not assigned to arrest the thief, but she did it well. Judy can be relied to catch the thief when all of the member of ZPD could not. Then, Judy finally solves the case of missing animals, and find out all of them in the hospital in Cliffside

Asylum. She is the only officer which is successful than others who have not cracked a case in two weeks.

c. Weak >< Strong

At the beginning of the story Zootopia in Bunnyburrow, the meek prey or especially rabbit is known as the weak figure. That stereotype appears because they can not fight for the predators, like Judy. She is failed to fight fox named

Gideon Grey, and starts to cry. Gideon shoves Judy hardly and she falls. Judy starts to tear up and her nose starts to twitch, she is tremble in fear.

Cry little baby bunny, cry, cry…[SCENE 2–Judy Confront Gideon]

Judy bounds up the wall, jumps off of the backs of the big animals and make it over. Then in the ring, she dodges the rhino's punches, pulls back against the ropes and kicks the rhino's hand making him punch himself, knocking his mouth guard and falls down. [SCENE 3 – The Zootopia Police Academy]

At the second quotation above, we can see the deconstruction of Judy‘s personality, from the weak then become a strong figure. It is because she wants to be a strong officer, and can help others. So, the first thing that she has to do is learning and always practice in every single activities or exercises in the police

29

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

academy. Months of training at the Zootopia Police Academy has also left her tactical, with an impressive amount of physical prowess She is doing sit up, on the ice wall she bounds up the wall. In the ring, Judy kicks Bison‘s hand into his face, and knocking him down.

d. Dumb >< Intelligent

The other personality of Judy at the beginning of story is stupid figure. She is always admitted by others as a dumb bunny because of her dream seemed impossible and unrationally for a rabbit, and also bullied by others around her.

She is bullied by two fox, named Gideon and Nick Wilde.

I want you to remember this moment the next time you think you will ever beanything more than just a stupid, carrot- farming dumb bunny! [SCENE 2 –Judy confront Gideon]

Dumb bunny [SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts toArrest Nick]

In the first quotation above, it shows a warning from the Gideon to Judy.

He claims that Judy will not ableto be anything to be proud of, except just being a weak and carrot farming dumb bunny. Then, the second quotation mentions that Judy is admitted as a dumb bunny by Nick Wilde, one of a fox in Zootopia.

Judy and Nick argue each other about the mistake of Judy. Then, Nick tries to avoid Judy by saying that Judy is just a stupid rabbit who thought she can be whatever she wants to be, but actually she can not. She can only be what she is, dumb bunny as the other know her before.

Then, Judy does not take it for granted, she knows that she is not a stupid rabbit like other said, so that‘s why she proves it , and show that she is a clever

30

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

and intelligent rabbit. That is one of the deconstruction of Judy‘s personality in the story. It can be proved in some scene as follows :

Actually, it's your word against yours. And if you want this pen, you're going to help me find this poor missing otter, or the only place you'll be selling pawpsicles is the prison cafeteria. It's called a hustle, sweetheart [SCENE 15 – Judy’s Hustle].

You are a clever bunny [SCENE 25 – Cliffside Asylum]

Judy had recorded all of Bellwether's confessions before by using her carrot pen. She did it as evidence to arrest Mayor Bellwether. [SCENE 37 – The True Villain].

From some quotations above can shows that Judy is actually an intelligent rabbit, not stupid. The first quotation is about the sly fox that always lie to get moneys. She is being intelligent enough to outsmart professional con artist, Nick

Wilde, several times. The fox admitt all of his deceptions to Judy, but he does not realize that Judy has recorded all of them. And the second is about the ability of Judy to imitate the sound of wolves. She roared like a wolf, and makes other wolves do the same thing, so they don‘t notice that Judy is settling into a room.

And the last quotations also show about the apptitude of Judy to face Bellwether, she records all of Bellwether deceptions by using her carrot pen.

e. Dissapointing >< Proud

The last personality of Judy in the story describe that Judy is a dissapointing figure. How much she struggled, but she also felt a failure in his life. She cannot manifest his expectations or dream at certain time. It can be proved in some scene as follows :

Judy explained the cause of the savage animals, but it was disappointing news for all parties, and Judy didn't realize it. 31

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

That news also makes Nick dissapointed to Judy, because she is not believe on him.[SCENE 28 – Judy’s Interview]

Judy looks the predators and the meek prey are divided into two camps, both of them doing protest[SCENE 29 – Zootopia News Network]

Both of the quotations above portrayed Judy as the dissapointing figure.

The first quotations describes about Judy's success in solving the missing mamals case, and Judy inform to the media about the cause of predators are going savage. But, Judy does not realize that information is the dissapointing news for all residents in zootopia, especially for the predators. For example Nick leaves Judy and said that probably best if she doesn‘t has a predator as a partner.

Then, the second quotation above describes the condition of Zootopia city after

Judy conveys the information to the media, and it looks like to be get worst.

Judy looks the predators and the meek prey are divided into two camps, both of them doing protest.

The previous personality of Judy who portrayed that she is a dissapointing figure, will be deconstructed to be a proud figure.. That is the opposition of previous hierarchy in the story. In the end, Judy can prove to others that she had realized all her dreams, and all her hard work has been paid by her achievements. Judy hopps as a proud figure can be seen in the table of 4.1.2.1 there are some quotations in some different scenes, such as

Congratulations, Officer Hopps. it's a real proud day for us little guys[SCENE 4 – Judy’s Graduation Ceremony]

We're real proud of you, Judy![SCENE5– Judy Travels to Zootopia]

Judy is successful to crackes the case of missing animals, she directly becomes the new public face of ZPD. It shows a photo 32

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

of a smiling Hopps. The photo is on a Pamphlet that reads, ZPD : Integrity, Honesty, Bravery [SCENE 31 – The Public Face of the ZPD]

In graduation ceremony, Judy graduated, and Judy gives a speech in front of society of Zootopia. Everybody cheer and applaud, they proud of Judy who saved Zootopia back in harmony[SCENE 38 – Judy’s Speech].

Based on some quotations above, we can see that Judy is really a proud

figure. The first quotation describes the condition of graduation ceremony. A

Mayor of Zootopia proudly announces the first rabbit officer in the police

academy graduation. Judy stands proudly in her first cop uniform and walks to

the stage when Mayor called her name to move forward, all of audiences cheer

up. Assisten of Mayor also steps forward to pin the ZPD badge to Judy. Then,

Judy‘s parents also proud of her because Judy can make her dream comes true.

The other achivement is the success of Judy to crackes the case of missing

animals, she directlybecomes the new public face of ZPD. The photo is on a

Pamphlet. And the second graduation ceremony. Once again, Judy is able to

solve the case that happened in Zootopia, she is succes to save Zootopia back in

harmony. So that, Judy gives her speech in front all ofthe residents of Zootopia.

Everybody cheer up and applaud for Judy, as their hero.

4.1.1.2 Deconstruction Analysis of Nick Wilde as Major character

a. Lier >< Trustworthy

The first personality of Nick Wilde is identified in the Zootopia script as

the lier animal. A lier figure is supposedly common to all foxes. From the first

time Nick comes and join in the story, the lier character is clearly visible in

33

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

hisself. It can be proved in the table of 4.2.2.2 there are some quotations that show Nick is a lier animal or figure in some different scenes, as follow :

Oh no, are you me? I don't have my wallet! I'd lose my head if it weren't attached to my neck. That's the truth. [SCENE 8 – Enter Nick Wilde]

Well. I stood up for you, and you lied to me. You liar!‖said Judy [SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts to Arrest Nick]

You think I'm gonna believe a fox?said Chief Bogo. [SCENE 23 – [Nick’s Childhood]

If you thought we would ever trust a fox without a muzzle, you're even dumber than you look, said the bullier [SCENE 23 – [Nick’s Childhood]

From the first quotation, you can see that Nick is acting to get a free ice cream. He accidentally went to the ice cream shop to buy jumbo ice cream, but in there, he pretends to lose his wallet, but it is a lie. In the second quotation,

Judy realize that both of the fox have lied to her, and she regrets for defending them. Then, in other case, Chief Bogo does not believe to Nick, because a fox can‘t be trusted, that is the stereotype. And the last quotation mention about that is also related to the previos explanation. When Nick was a child, he has bullied by others and said that if a fox is honest, so the one who says that is stupid.

Because there is never been a honest fox.

Based on the explanations above, the character of Nick Wilde as a lier fox can be deconstructed to be the good character, that is a trustworthy figure. Nick is actually a good figure at the beginning, but there is something that makes him dissapointed, so he becomes a lier. The trustworthy figure of Nick can be shown as follow :

34

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

―I, Nicholas Wilde, promise to be brave, loyal, helpful, and trustworthy!‖, said Nick [SCENE 23 – Nick’s Childhood]

When Nick was a kid, Nick had a dream of joining the local Junior Ranger

Scouts. After that, his mother scraped up enough money to buy a brand new scout uniform. He comes there directly and he gives an oath in the scout uniforms day. One of the content of his promise is to be a trustworthy.

He wants to change the perception of others about a fox that is considered as a liar, but he is different, as trustworthy fox. And Judy also assumed Nick is so much more than that, he is a good boy, does not like others perception.

b. Sly >< Helpful

Then, Nick Wilde portrayed in the story is a sly figure. Nick Wilde is shifty, sly and cunning, traits supposedly common to all foxes. He is easily conning and tricking others through his charm and friendly demeanor.

He nearly always has a sly smile on his face. It can be shown by some quotations as follow :

It's called a hustle, sweetheart. And I'm not the liar, he is! [SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts to Arrest Nick]

Permit, receipt of declared commerce, and I did not falsely advertise anything. Take care[SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts to Arrest Nick]

Both of the quotations above describe Nick Wilde as a sly figure. It is begun when Judy finds out the deceit of Nick in making a pawpsicle and sells it to the lemmings. The process of making it is actually breaking the rules, so that

Judy has to arrest Nick for his bad act. Based on te first quotation, he is a sly fox, he is tricky and knows how to get out of sticky situations using his words and

35

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

knows how to get around the city easily managing to evade Judy and tricking her into stepping into wet cement. Nick tries to outsmart Judy by pointing to someone else who was guilty, not him. Then Nick turned towards another person, and disappeared. And the second quotation is also show Nick has obtained permission to sell food, and has the evidence. So, Judy can not arrest him directly for her accusation.

The character of Nick as a sly fox as mention above, can be deconstructed to be the good one, it is as the helpful figure. Althought Nick was described as a sly figure, but he also has a good side in himself to help others, like Judy. He helps Judy to crack the case of missing animals

―Look, you gave her a clown vest, a three-wheeled joke- mobile, and two days to solve a case you guys haven't cracked in two weeks? Yeah, it's no wonder she needed to get help from a fox. None of you guys were gonna help her, were you?‖ [SCENE 23 – Nicks’s Childhood].

Nick helps Judy explain to Chief Bogo what had happened, and also defending Judy when she is scolded by Chif Bogo who said she wants to be fired if she can not solve the case within 48 hours. Nick conveys his resentment toword the attitude of Chief Bogo who does not give justice between the officers. Chief Bogo should not give a case for the new officer in two days, which the other officers cannot complete for two weeks, and Judy has to work it alone, without any partner. Therefore Nick is willing to help, because no one of them can help Judy except Nick.

c. Rabbit predator >< Get along with rabbit

36

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Then, character of Nick Wilde in the script described as the rabbit predator. So, the fox and rabbit can not be united or stay together in one place. It can be shown from some quotations like this :

But watch out, I‘m a fox… and you said in your dumb little stage plays, us predators used to eat prey[SCENE2–Judy confront Gideon]

Judy‘s father said that fox is the worst animal in Zootopia [SCENE 5 – Judy Travels to Zootopia]

Both of the quotations above describe the character of Nick Wilde. Rabbit is very coward to the fox, because he is a predator, and fox likes to prey on rabbits. It is mentionedin the first quotation about the act of Gideon Grey to

Judy. Gideon reminds Judy that he is a predator and Judy should coward of him, because he has the killer instinct in her DNA or it is called as the uncontrollable biological urge to to hurt and persecute. That statement is also justified by

Judy‘s father. He tells to Judy that fox is the worst animal when she wants to move to the big city Zootopia, and he asks Judy to be careful. And Judy has to bring the fox repellent to protect her from the fox attact.

The character of Nick Wilde above as the rabbit predator can be deconstructed to be the figure who get along with rabbit. They can stay together for along day and help each other. Both of them always seen in every different place, such as :

Nick and Judy run, sliding around a corner. A head is a gondola station. They run to the gondola. Judy darts out of Manchas way, but slips and is headed off the platform when she manages to grab on, dangling from the edge. Nick searches for Judy. He tries to hold on to the gondola for Judy. [SCENE 22 – The Chase in the Rainforest District]

37

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

―Carrots, you saved my life ! [SCENE 22 – The Chase in the Rainforest District]

―Well, I've been thinking... it would be nice to have a partner‖, Judy gives Nick a ZPD application and also holds out the carrot pen to him.[SCENE 28 – Judy’s Interview]

The second quotation shows both of them get along each other. Judy lets go, swinging them over to a netting of vines. The vines break under and Judy and Nick land on leaves and they both get up in vines a few feet off the ground. The last quotation shows the solidarity between Judy and Nick.

As a partner in resolving the missing animals case, Judy also wants Nick to be his real partner in the other case. She gives him an application to be the part of

ZPD and ask Nick to write down, in order he can register to be an officer.

d. Betrayer >< Loyal

The last character or personality of Nick Wilde as a fox commonly in the story described as the betrayer figure. Every residents in Zootopia knows Nick as a betrayer. Altough others had given their trust to Nick, but Nick still betrayed him. It is proven to the Mr Big, the most feared crime boss in Tundratown. Nick has betrayed Mr. Big, and finally made Nick as their fugitive.

―I trusted you, Nicky. I welcomed you into my home. We broke breadtogether. Grandmama made you a cannoli. And how did you repay my generosity? With a rug. Made from the butt of a skunk. A skunk butt rug. You disrespected me. You disrespected my Grandmama, who I buried in that skunk butt rug‖ [SCENE 20 : Mr. Big]

Based on the quotation above, it explain the bad character of Nick. At some point during his status as a con artist, Nick fell in with Mr. Big, a feared arctic shrew crime boss, developing a stable partnership with him. Mr. Big liked

38

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

and trusted the fox, welcoming him into his home and even introducing him to

his grandmother, who made him a cannoli. However, Nick later took advantage

of Big's trust by selling him a very expensive wool rug secretly made from the

fur of a skunk's rear end. Feeling betrayed and disrespected, Mr. Big was very

angry with Nick, turned Nick away, and threatening to kill him if they ever met

again.

Although Nick is well-known as the betrayer figure, like the character of

fox commonly, but he is also has the good side in hisself. Honestly, he is also a

loyal figure. A betrayer figure is deconsturcted to be a loyal figure. It is shown to

Judy Hopps, as one of the character who bothered him before. The quotation that

shows him as a loyal figure can be seen here

―Don't worry, Carrots. I'll let you erase it... in 48 hours‖, Judy smiles, cries tears of joy, sniffs, wiping away one.[SCENE 33 – Judy and Nick Reconcile]

―All right, get in here. Oh, you bunnies, you're so emotional. There we go, deep breath‖, Judy walks up to Nick and puts her head on Nick's chest and they hug as she cries more. He pats her head and pulls her closer. [SCENE 33 – Judy and Nick Reconcile].

As you can see above, both of the quotations show Nick is very sweet and

also loyal figure. Although Judy has hurt Nick when she said that every predator

might go to be savage, but Nick does not get angry with her, and forgive her.

Nick still accepts Judy's arrival, and let Judy hug him. And Nick is still be a

loyal partner of Judy to solve the case.

4.1.1.3 Deconstruction Analysis of Dawn Bellwether as Minor character 39

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

a. Unappreciated >< Powerful

The personality of Dawn Bellwether as the Assistant of Mayor Zootopia can be identified in the Zootopia script as the unappreciated animal From the first time Bellwether comes and join in the story, it is clearly visible in herself. It can be proved in the table of 4.2.1.3, most of the quotations will show you the character or personality of Dawn Bellwether in some different scenes. So, the first character as an uppreciated figure can be seen as follows :

―Oh, I'm more of a glorified secretary. I think Mayor Lionheart just wanted the sheep vote. Feels good to be appreciated‖ [SCENE 24 – Assistance from Bellwether]

―Smellwether!that's a fun little name he likes to use. I called him Lionfart once, he did not care for that‖, Lionheart calls his assistant's name like a joke [SCENE 24 – Assistance from Bellwether]

Both of the quotations above show the personality of Dawn Bellwether.

Mayor Lionheart always treats his assistant haphazardly. She always gets rude treatment from Lionheart, and also unappreciated. Although she has done everything for Lionheart, but Lionheart always ignore her, does not care about her. It is proved in the first quotation that her job as assistant mayor is more of a glorified secretary job.. Then, the second quotation also shows that Mayor

Lionheart always doesn't respect his assistant by call her using a strange name.

Lionheart always calls hername like a joke.

The character of Bellwether who is unappreciated by Lionheart as the

Mayor of Zootopia can be deconstructed to be the powerful figure. It can be seen in the table of 4.2.2.3. Bellwether who is usually not recognized, has no power, and underestimated before. But now she becomes a figure who has power over 40

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

everything, everything is in her control and commands. It is caused by

Bellwether had replaced the position of Mayor Lionheart as the Mayor of

Zootopia.

―They thought it would be better if a predator, such as myself, wasn't the first face that you see when you walk into the ZPD‖ [SCENE 30 – Moving to Records]

“So that's it? Prey fears predators and you stay in power?‖, asked Judy [SCENE 37 – The True Villain].

Bellwether had been promoted to be a new Mayor, replacing Mayor

Lionheart. She is in charge of ZPD, and has the right to decide anything. It is proved from the first quotation above, Clawhauser who descrbed as a cheetah should not ZPD, because he is a predator. The new Mayorchanges the position of Clawhauser to the Record section in downstairs, he can't bein the ZPD information section anymore. Mayor Bellwether willeliminates everything about predators in ZPD. Then, the second quotation above tells about the question of Judy to Bellwether. Judy wants to makes sure that the reason of

Bellwether does all of this mess up because she wants to stay in power, so she makes every prey in fears. And predator can be eliminated.

b. Helpful >< Betrayer

Then, another character of Bellwether in the story can be described as the helpful figure. Actually, Bellwether is a good figure in the first appearance, she likes to help other who need his help, because it makes herself to be respected.

So, she is never mind to help Judy in collect the information, like this :

There! Traffic cams for the whole city. Well, this is so exciting, actually. I mean, you know, I never get to do

41

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

anything this important[SCENE 24 – Assistance from Bellwether]

Based on the quotation above, Bellwether seemed very happy to help Judy.

She is eager to help and excited she could be useful for collecting the information secretly. She mostly does paperwork and menial jobs. She is happy can help other, so that she can be useful for others. And when Judy is succesful for her research, then Judy will thank to Bellwether, because of her effort, Judy can finish it well. And the statement of Judy itself is very worth for Bellwether, because she seemed like respected. That is the most important thing that

Bellwether wants all this time.

But, in the last appearance of Bellwether shows she has a bad figure. This is the shape of Deconstruction of Bellwether personality before as the helpful figure, but now she becomes a betrayer figure. She has betrayed all of the residents in Zootopia and also Judy who believe Bellwether as a kind figure. In can be shown in this quotation :

―Get them !‖, said Bellwether angrily and ask the three rams go after Judy.

―Come on out Judy. We're on the same team, Judy! Underestimated, underappreciated... Aren't you sick of it? Predators - they may be strong and loud, but prey out number predators ten-to-one. Think of it - 90% of the population united against a common enemy. We'll be unstoppable‖, said Bellwether [SCENE 37 – The True Villain]

Both of quotation above shows that Bellwether betrays Judy as a fellow prey. Bellwether tries to catch Judy who succesful collect all of the evidences about the toxic flower. And also Judy knows that Bellwether is a mastermind of all the chaos in Zootopia. Bellwether tries to persuade Judy to join with her as

42

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

the prey, and has a power in Zootopia. Bellwether being bored because the meek

prey, particularly herself always considered as the stupid, weak, unappreciated,

and ignored by predators. So, she wants to revenge by making predators go

savage and they will be caged. Then, Bellwether as a meek prey will has a

power. However, Judy does not want to join with her, so that‘s why Bellwether

has to stop Judy and wants to kill Judy.

4.1.2. Devaluation of Major and Minor Characters to be the New Hierarchy

After the deconstruction of Major and Minor characters have been founded

in the script of Zootopia, then both of the characters have to be devaluated to be

the new hierarchy. Because, as Jacque Derrida said in his theory, the search for

absolute meaning is impossible to do. Because after the truth is found, there is

still another trace of truth behind it. So, after the deconstruction from both of

character has been founded, there are still other characters or a new hierarchy

produced in major and minor characters related to the script of Zootopia.

Here are the devaluaton of major and minor characters

1. Judy Hopps as Major Character

 Ambitious figure  Hero figure  Responsible figure  Hard working figure  Inspiring figure  Helpful figure  Unselfish figure  Leader figure  Cooperate with fox

2. Nick Wilde as Major Character

 Hard working figure

43

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

 Intelligent figure

 Reliable figure

 Opinionated figure

 Cooperate with rabbit

3. Dawn Bellwether as Minor Character

 Two-faced figure

 Ruthless figure

 Despicable figure

4.1.2.1. Devaluation of Judy Hoops as the New Hierarchy

a. Ambitious figure

The character of Judy Hopps can be found in the story of Zootopia is an

ambitious figure. Judy is really has a big ambition to be an officer. It can be seen

in this quotation.

―Then I guess I'll have to be the first one! Because I‘m gonna make the world a better place!‖, said Judy. [SCENE 2 - Judy Confronts Gideon]

Based on the quotation above, Judy does not care about anything that

others said about her. Moreover her parents, who don‘t believe of her dream.

Both of her parents disagree and said that there is never been a bunny cop in

their family history. They are confused about the willing of Judy to be an officer,

because both of them as her parents, and also 275 brothers and sisters of Judy

arethe carrot farmer too. It seemed like a tradition of their family.

b. Hard working figure

44

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Then, another character of Judy Hopps in the story described as the hard working figure. Judy works hard to become an officer. She knows that being an officer is not easy, so it requires a very extra effort.

Judy stays up late studying, doing sit ups, and does personal training by doing pull-ups on her bunk bed with an open book in front of her.[SCENE 3 – The Zootopia Police Academy]

Based on the quotation above, Judy is mentioned had worked hard all that time when she is training in Police Academy of Zootopia. From the first time she tried that training, she alwayas failed in every category, does not master them.

Because of that, she is studying and training at the night alone, doing sit ups.

She is training how to struggles through the sand, swings across the bars, dig into the ice wall, etc.

c. Helpful figure

Judy is a good character, she always helps others that need her help. Her kindness is seen from the first time of her appearance until the end of the story.

For instance when she helps to pay the Jumbo pop of Nick in the ice cream shop, because of Nick said he does not bring his wallet. Then, another case can be seen as follows :

Oh, thank you! Bless you, bless you little bunny! Take this, find my Emmitt. Bring him home to me and my babies, please. [SCENE 13 – Judy Takes the Otterton Case]

Wait. Wait! She's the bunny that saved my life yesterday! From that giant donut![SCENE 20 – Mr. Big]

Both of the quotations above are the evidences of Judy as the helpful figure.

As the first quotation, A husband of Mrs. Otterton had been missing for two

45

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

weeks, and no one knows its presents, event the detectives of ZPD, they can not find him. But, Judy can helps Mrs. Otterton and tries her best. Mrs. Otterton is very grateful to Judy. Then, other evidence can be shown in the second quotation. Fru-Fru as the daughter of Mr. Big said that Judy has saved her life from the giant donut yesterday. So, Mr. Big accept Judy‘s coming because of her kindness to his daughter.

d. Leader figure

Although in the first character, Judy was mentioned as the stupid or dumb bunny, but in other scene she is clever, and that‘s why she can be a leader. She can be seen as the leader figure in this scene.

Judy Hopps : ―Don't call me cute! Get in the car!‖. Nick Wilde: ―Okay, you're the boss! [SCENE 15 – Judy’s Hustle]

Based on the quotation above, it can be seen that Judy has a power toward

Nick.Judy was ordering Nick into the car, and Nick obeys it. Although in the first, Nick always argued with Judy and always does not want to lose.

But, Nick has to follow what Judy said because Judy knows about his secret. It is one of Judy's skills in seeing the situation.

e. Hero figure

Judy Hopps as the new officer in Zootopia can save the condition of

Zootopia city from the mess. She is a hero from all of resident in Zootopia.

Because of her, there is no problem or different between the meek prey and predator. Both of them live in harmony in Zootopia as before.

46

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

In Savanna Central, Zootopia is peaceful again. Judy was walking, looking at everything is back to normal. She sees a giraffe kid and a tiger cub playing with a soccer ball. Emmitt is being cured from his savage state. And Clawhauser is happy because he is back to his old job in ZPD[SCENE 38 – Judy’s Speech]

In the quotation above, we can see that the condition of Zootopia is peaceful again, back in the harmony. Mr. Otterton who had gone savage because of the toxic flower, finally healed slowly in the hospital. Clawhauser who had been transferred before, now she is returning to his old job at the front desk of

ZPD. And also the Mayor Lionheart has been released.

f. Unselfish figure

Besides a hero figure, Judy also has unselfish figure mentioned in the story. Judy is a good character, never selfish, she always care and help others. It can be seen clearly in this scene.

―With all due respect, sir, a good cop is supposed to serve and protect, help the city, not tear it apart.I don't deserve this badge‖, Judy resigned from ZPD. [SCENE 31 – The Public Face of the ZPD]

Judy offers to be the new face of ZPD, because she has cracked the case.

But, Judy does not take the award from Mayor Bellwether. She can not be happy when she look at Zootopia in mess up. She said that she comes to Zootopia to make it be better, not the opposite, it gets worse. A good officer is supposed to serve and protect the city, not tear it apart. She does not want to take the opportunity to become famous because of the mess occurred, she is unselfish figure. Then, she decides to resign as the officer.

g. Responsible figure

47

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Then, other character of Judy Hopps as be mentioned in the story is the responsible figure. She is always responsible for whatever she has done, especially if it is wrong. And ten she will repair that mess. It will be proved in this quotation

―I know you'll never forgive me, and I don't blame you - I wouldn't forgive me either. I was ignorant and irresponsible and small-minded. But predators shouldn't suffer because of my mistakes. I have to fix this. But I can't do it without you‖, said Judy [SCENE 33 – Judy and Nick Reconcile]

Judy realize that the reason of predator is going savage because of flowers named ‗Night Howlers‘, not wolves. Then she turns back to the Zootopia to resolve the mess had happened. But, she has to meet to Nick also, and apologize to him. She does not want to be irresponsible for all his mistakes. So, she has to fix it because she can not see the predator get suffer because of her.

h. Inspiring figure

Judy is successful to finish the case of missing animals that the other officers can not do. Then, she conveys her speech in podium at the graduation day. She can be an inspiring figure in the story, because she always tries her best in facing the problem. She conveys all of her journey so that can motivied others. It can be seen in this quotation

―When I was a kid, I thought Zootopia was this perfect place, where everyone got along and anyone could be anything. Turns out, real life is a little bit more complicated than a slogan on a bumper sticker. Real life is messy. We all have limitations, we all make mistakes, which means - hey, glass half full! - we all have a lot in common. And the more

48

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

we try to understand one another, the more exceptional each of us will be. But we have to try. So no matter what type of animal you are; from the biggest elephant, to our first fox, I implore you - try. Try to make the world a better place. Look inside yourself and recognize that change starts with you. It starts with me. It starts with all of us‖ [SCENE 38 – Judy’s Speech]

The quotation above is a speech of Judy in front of the residents of

Zootopia. All of her words there can motivied others who heard that, especially

Nick. As Judy said in her speech, everybody can be anything, no matter what type of animal you are, from the biggest elephant until the fox who doesnot trust others. The most important thing that you should do is try and try, to make the world to be a better place.

i. Cooperate with Fox

The last character of Judy Hopps mentioned in the story as the figure who

cooperte with a fox. Although in the previous scene is mentioned that rabit and

fox is never get along, because a fox as the rabbit predator. But, in te last story,

both of them finally become a partner in ZPD, to cracks the other problem

together.

―Assignments: Officers Hopps and Wilde... We have reports of a street racer tearing up Savanah Central. Find him. Shut him down‖, said Chief Bogo [SCENE 39 – Return to the Bulpen]

Based on the quotation above, Nick becomes an officer in ZPD. Judy and

Nick (now in uniform) sit together among ZPD‘s finest. At the division of

assignments, both of them joined in the same team, as partner. Then, both of

them are seen in a big police car, driving through Savanna Central to cracks the

case. 49

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

4.1.2.2. Devaluation of Nick Wilde as Major character

a. Hard working figure

The researcher finds out that Nick has another character except the

characters which are deconstructed in the first problem of study. That character

is hard working figure. It can be shown in the quotations as follows

―I make two hundred bucks a day, Fluff. Three hundred and sixty-five days a year since I was twelve. And time is money. Hop along‖, said Nick Wilde [SCENE 15 - Judy’s Hustle]

Based on the quotation above, it shows the figire of Nick who always work

hard. At the first time of his appearance, Nick was well-off, he is claiming to

have made $200 on a daily basis since the age of twelve (though the accuracy of

these claims is questionable). He often works and splits the day's earnings with

his quick-tempered partner and fellow fox, Finnick. So, we can see that Nick as

the har working figure, to make moneys.

b. Clever animal

Another character of Nick Wilde in the story is a clever animal. He always

has an idea to face the problem. It can be proved when he and Judy are looking

for the information of missing otterton to the jaguar, Manchas. Anf for the

others, can be seen in the scene as follows :

―The traffic cams would have caught it! Oh ho, pretty sneaky, slick!‖, said Judy to the Nick [SCENE 23 – Nick’s Childhood].

―You know, if I wanted to avoid surveillance because I was doing something illegal, which I never have, I would use the maintenance tunnel 6B, which would put them out... right there‖,said Nick. [SCENE 24 – Assistance from Bellwether].

50

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Both of the quotations above show the character of Nick Wilde as the clever figure. From the first quotation describes the surprised expression to praise Nick's intelligence, because Judy does not think that Nick would have such a brilliant idea to look for the existence of Manchas. The new idea appears in Nick's head when he saw the view in traffic central. He thinks about jam- cams, and it will catchthe picture or video of what had happened. The, the second quotation also shows the intelligence of Nick in looking the location.

When they see the jam-cams, there is a problem because the picture of

Mr. Manchas is gone. But, Nick has an idea for it. He directly use the maintenance tunnel 6B, and finally find him. Nick is already looks like a detective.

c. Reliable figure

Then, other character of Nick Wilde described in the story is reliable figure.

Nick always can be relied upon in any situation and conditions. For instance, when Judy asked Nick, if he knew the picture of Duke Weaselton, then,

Nick said that he knows everybody in Zootopia. Then, another evidence can be shown in this scene :

Judy is stunned because all of the evidences are gone, but Nick holds up the case containing Doug's dart gun and laughs triumphantly. [SCENE 36 –The Train Car Chase].

Based on the quotation above, it shows the skill of Nick, and he is really the figure wo can be relied. When Nick and Judy want to bring all of the evidence of toxic flower in ZPD, they are failed. They look on shocked as the

51

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

train slams into the wall in a fiery crash, and all of the evidences are gone. But

Nick still has one case evidence, and Judy is very excited.

d. Opinionated figure

Nick Wilde is a character who likes to opinionated about something. When he sees something, or experiences the event itself, he will argue or give a direct conclusion to that problem. It can also be considered as a lesson for himself. It can be shown when he gives an opinion to Judy, such as :

―Okay. Tell me if this story sounds familiar. Naive little hick with good grades and big ideas decides, "Hey, look at me, I‘m gonna move to Zootopia, where predators and prey live in harmony and sing ―Kumbaya‖!" Only to find - whoopsie - we don‘t all get along. And whoopsie no one cares about her or her dreams. And soon enough those dreams die and our bunny sinks into emotional and literal squalor, living in a box under a bridge. Till, finally, she has no choice but to go back home with that cute fuzzy-wuzzy little tail between her legs. All right, look, everyone comes to Zootopia thinking they can be anything they want. Well, you can‘t. You can only be what you are‖, said Nick. [SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts to Arrest Nick]

―I learned two things that day. One: I was never gonna let anyone see that they got to me. And two. If the world's only gonna see a fox as shifty and untrustworthy, there's no point in trying to be anything else‖.[SCENE 23 – Nick’s Childhood]

Based on both quotations above, the character of Nick Wilde as the opinionated figure can be proven. The first quotation describes about the opinion of Nick about the thinking of every residents in Zootopia, especially Judy who just came to Zootopia. The moral message that can be taken from the first quotation is about the quality of ourselve. Because we can only be what he is, as the quotes of Nick. Then, the second quotation describes about, the opnion of

Nick toward the accident which is happened in Nick‘s childhood. So, Nick 52

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

declared that if the world viewed foxes as nothing more than sly, vile and

untrustworthy scoundrels, he will accept it, and subsequently doing so by

becoming a successful con artist.

e. Cooperate with rabbit

Nick Wilde is a character who likes to hunt rabbit, but in the last story, he

is the character who cooperates with rabbit. He did it because he knows that no

one trust him, except Judy. So, he helps Judy in order to crack the case and

collect the evidence to arrest Mayor Bellwether as the mindmaster of the mess in

Zootopia.

―All right, you know, you're milking it. Besides, I think we got it. I think we got it! We got it up there! Thank you, yackety- yak! You laid it all out beautifully!‖, said Nick. Judy and Nick stand up and put their arms around each other. [SCENE 37 – The True Villain].

Based on the quotation above, Nick and Judy cooperate to get an evidence

to make Bellwether can be arrested. They act in order Bellwether believe to

them. Both of them act as if Nick had turned into a savage fox and attacked

Judy, but actually they want to record Bellwether confession as he mastermind

in the case of predators are going savage. Judy chuckling at her playful acting,

both of them are very satisfied with the results of their acting.

4.1.2.3.Devaluation of Dawn Bellwether as Minor character

a. Two-faced figure

Dawn Bellwether is the new Mayor of Zootopia who replaced the Mayor

Lionheart. Bellwether is a devious sheep who can justify various ways to realize

her goals. At the beginning of the story, she is a kind figure who likes to help

53

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

others. However, this is actually a deceit to disguise her true character, as a deceptive and cunningly diabolical mastermind. It can also called as the two- faced fgure, and she likes to divide and conquer between meek prey and predators. We can see the evidence from this scene :

―Yes, police?! There's a savage fox in the Natural History Museum! Officer Hopps is down! Please hurry!‖, said Bellwether on the phone and fake panicked. [SCENE 37 – The True Villain].

Based on the quotation above, Bellwether is the two-faced character. She tries to divide and conquer between Nick and Judy. She wants Nick to be savage, hurt Judy, and then Nick will be arrested like other savage animals. She did it by fires the dart gun and the serum pellet hits Nick on the neck, leaving a blue stain. Nick starts to grunt and groan in pain. Then, Bellwether will save and no one knows that she is one who responsible for all of the mess up.

b. Ruthless figure

Then, another character of Bellwether in the last story described as the ruthless figure. She is ruthless and power-hungry, perfectly willing to kill anyone who gets in her way or simply refuses to agree with her beliefs. It can be seen in this scene :

―Gosh, think of the headlines! "Hero Cop Killed by Savage Fox!", said Bellwether and laughs evilly at the same time. [SCENE 37 – The True Villain].

Based on the quotation above, Bellwether tries to kill Judy because Judy has tried to thwart her plan. So, she has to do it, even though she really likes

Judy and Judy is also a meek prey who is supposed to be on the same side.

Bellwether is a ruthless figure, she accidentally makes Nick become savage. And 54

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

when Judy is almost killed, she is thinking about the headlines that will be

written later about the incident, instead of helping Judy.

c. Despicable figure

Then, the last character of Bellwether described as the despicable figure. It

is seen when the predator prey news team reads the headline, Footage shows of

Bellwether being led to jail in cuffs and an orange jumpsuit. That is really can't

be forgiven, so every resident of Zootopia thinks she is despised because of his

actions.

―Former Mayor Dawn Bellwether is behind bars today, guilty of masterminding the savage attacks that have plagued Zootopia of late‖, said a reporter of Fabienne Growley[SCENE 38 – Judy’s Speech]

Based on the quotation above, Bellwether is seen by society as a

despicable figure, because of she has done a bad thing. They show Bellwether in

an orange jumpsuit, in handcuffs, filled with contempt, as she is escorted

through the crowd as photographers take pictures.Shee is a despcable figure who

has the heart to divide Zootopia, or trying to make Zootopia city to be not

harmony anymore

[He pulls the serum pellet out from his shirt pocket] Well, it's right here.  Judy Hopps: What you've got in the weapon there? Those are blueberries. From my family's farm!  Nick Wilde: [tastes the blueberry where he's been hit and blows a kiss] Mwah!

familiar. Naive little hick with good grades and big ideas decides, "Hey, look at me, I‘m gonna move to Zootopia, where predators and prey live in harmony and sing ―Kumbaya‖!" Only to find - whoopsie - we don‘t all get along. And that dream of becoming a big-city cop? Double whoopsie! She‘s a meter maid. And whoopsie number three-sie, no one cares about her or her dreams. And soon enough those dreams die and our bunny sinks into emotional and literal squalor, living in a box under a bridge. Till, finally, she has no choice but to go back home with that cute fuzzy-wuzzy little tail between her legs  ―All right, look, everyone comes to Zootopia thinking they can be anything they want. CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

5.1 Conclusion

Based on analyzing the data, the writer would like to make some following

conclusions about the major and minor characters in the story of Zootopia. So the

writer concludes that :

1. There are eleven characters or personalites that have been deconstructed

from their previous nature each other. In Judy Hopps as the major character,

there are five characters that have been deconstructed. They are from the

coward to brave, underestimated to reliable, weak to strong, dumb to

intelligent, and dissapointing to proud figure. Then, Nick Wilde as the

second major character, there are four characters that have been

deconstructed. They are lier to trustworthy, sly to helpful, betrayer to loyal

figure, and rabbit predator to a figure who get along with rabbit. And the

last is Dawn Bellwether as the minor character, there are two characters that

have been deconstructed. They are unappreciated to powerful, and also

helpful to betrayer figure. The major character of this study has the

previledge position in the story. It is proved when the both of major

characters assumed as unimportant figure at the beginning, but they can be

important figure in the last of story, although it does not make sense

2. There is still a new hierarchy or devaluation of the three characters above.

After the opposition of every character has been found, there is still a new

hierarchy that appears and cannot be included in the page of old hierarchy

86

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

category. In Judy hopps as the major character is found nine characters. She

is a rabbit which is described as the ambitious, hard working, helpful,

leader, hero, responsible, inspiring, unselfish figure, and also figure who

cooperates with a fox. Then, the second major character is Nick Wilde that

is found five characters. He is a fox which is described as the hard working,

intelligent, reliable, opinionated figure, and also figure who cooperates with

a rabbit. And the last is Dawn Bellwether as the minor character, that is

found three characters in the new hierarchy. She is a sheep which is

described as the two-faced, ruthless, and despicable figure in the last story.

Here, the writer is uncovering the deeply complex foundation that is

difficult to make sense, because there is no general truth or the permanent

personality of each character described in the story, they can be changed or

reversed in the last. Then, produced a new hierarchy or personality of

character.

5.2 Suggestion

Having seen the result of the study, the researcher would like to offer the

suggestion as the following:(1) To the lecturers of literary criticism, it is

suggested to conduct, elaborate and perform deep research in the study.

(2) To other researchers, it is suggested that this study could be further expanded

especially in literary criticism field regarding with postmodernism or post-

structuralism approach. (3) To the readers, it is suggested to understand the

deconstruction theory and to systematize the steps in doing deconstruction in

some literature work, whether it is prose, novel, or drama.

APPENDIX I

Summary of Zootopia

In a world populated by anthropomorphic mammals, rabbit Judy Hopps from rural Bunnyburrow fulfills her childhood dream of becoming a police officer in urban Zootopia. Despite being the academy valedictorian, Judy is delegated to parking duty by Chief Bogo, who doubts her potential because she is a rabbit. On her first day, she is hustled by a con artist fox duo, Nick Wilde and Finnick.

Judy abandons parking duty to arrest Duke Weaselton, a weasel who stole a bag of crocus bulbs known as Midnicampum holicithias. Bogo reprimands her, but an otter named Mrs. Otterton enters Bogo's office pleading for someone to find her husband Emmitt, one of fourteen predators who are missing. When Judy volunteers and Assistant Mayor Dawn Bellwether praises the assignment, Bogo has no choice but to let Judy take the case. He gives her 48 hours to find Emmitt Otterton on the condition that if she fails, she resigns.

Judy blackmails Nick into assisting her by covertly recording his confession to tax evasion, having ascertained from the 'last-sighting' photo of Otterton that Nick was the last to see him. They track Otterton to a limousine owned by crime boss Mr.

Big, who reveals Otterton went "savage"—reverted to a feral state—and attacked his chauffeur Manchas. At his home, Manchas mentions Otterton yelled about "night howlers" before the attack. Moments later, Manchas himself turns savage and chases the pair. Judy saves Nick by trapping Manchas and calls the ZPD for help, but when they arrive, Manchas has vanished. Bogo demands that Judy turn in her badge, but

Nick reminds Bogo that Judy still has ten hours to solve the case.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

At City Hall, Bellwether allows Judy and Nick access to the city's traffic cameras. They discover Manchas was captured by wolves, who Judy surmises are the

"night howlers". They locate the missing predators—all gone savage—imprisoned at

Cliffside Asylum, where Mayor Leodore Lionheart hides them from the public while trying to determine the cause of their behavior. Lionheart and the asylum staff are arrested for false imprisonment and Bellwether becomes the new mayor.

Judy, praised for solving the case, has become friends with Nick and asks him to join the ZPD as her partner. However, she upsets him at a press conference by suggesting a predatory biological cause for the recent savage behavior; her comments also incite hateful speech and discrimination against predators throughout Zootopia.

Wracked with guilt for the consequences of her words, Judy quits her job and returns to Bunnyburrow.

Back home, Judy learns that the night howlers are actually the crocus bulbs

Weaselton stole, and they contain a neurotoxin that has severe psychotropic effects on mammals, causing them to go savage. After returning to Zootopia and reconciling with Nick, the pair confront Weaselton, who (with persuasion from Mr.

Big) tells them the bulbs he stole were for a ram named Doug. They find Doug in a laboratory hidden in the city subway, developing a drug made from night howlers, which he has been shooting at predators with a dart gun.

Judy and Nick obtain the serum as evidence, but before they can reach the

ZPD, Bellwether confronts them in the Natural History Museum and takes the evidence, revealing herself as the mastermind behind a prey-supremacist conspiracy to frame predators as dangerous and savage. Bellwether traps Judy and Nick in an exhibition after Nick refuses to abandon an injured Judy.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

She shoots a serum pellet at Nick to make him kill Judy and summons the ZPD for help, but Judy and Nick have replaced the serum pellets in Bellwether's gun with blueberries. Enraged, Bellwether threatens to frame the pair for the attacks before discovering that Judy baited her into openly declaring her role in the attacks and recorded the confession with her recording device; Bellwether attempts to escape, only to find herself and her crooked group of cops surrounded by Chief Bogo and his loyal officers.

Bellwether is arrested and sent to prison for her actions. Lionheart publicly denies knowledge of Bellwether's plot and states that his imprisonment of the savage predators was a "wrong thing for the right reason". With the cause of the epidemic identified, the savage animals are cured and Judy rejoins the ZPD. Nick graduates from the Zootopia Police Academy as the city's first fox police officer and becomes

Judy's partner
