HEADPHONES AVAILABLE FOR THE HARD OF HEARING. 2 | Holy Angels Church • Basehor, KS PLEASE ASK AN USHER OR GREETER. +Pax+ “Gaudete” or Rejoice Sunday of Advent

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Holy Angels,

Rejoice, again, I say, “Rejoice!” for the Lord is near! Very near, indeed! It seems impossible that half of December has passed us and the end of the year looms with Christmas just a mere novena of days away now! Indeed, now, this Sunday, is the time for those of you who want to pray a traditional Christmas novena (easy enough to look up on the internet) up to the great day itself. But before you start … Please do yourself a huge favor and take stock to determine if it is not time, indeed, to return today, Sunday, to partake of the multitude of graces one receives on being washed clean in the “sin bin” with our Communal Sacramental Confessions today starting at 4 p.m. here and going until the last person is absolved who is in line. This is being afforded by the kindness of various scattered around the church. We have confessions as well, Wednesdays 7 – 7:45 am, when I am celebrating Wednesday 8 a.m. Mass, Saturdays, from 3:45 – 4:15 pm and, as always, by calling me for an appointment. The last scheduled confes- sions to be heard before Christmas are Saturday, Dec. 22. There is no better way to spiritually prepare for Christmas celebrations than a good confession, some good, solid prayer and, of course, giving of one- self during the season in deeds and sacrifices with a charitable heart. Speaking of having a charitable heart, our parishioners and congregants are to be commended for their charitable hearts. They are so evident in the Advent and Christmas Season! Many have extended themselves to truly give: with our Angel Tree families who were wonderfully provided for; Operation St. Nick that is a perenni- al favorite of all who care about the military who live away and who long for home at Christmastime; our Winter Coat Collection that provides warmth for so many through the dispersal at Leavenworth Catholic Charities; and our particular charity we have adopted for the winter season: Alexandra’s House. For those of you who heard the sweet entreaty by Kittie Umscheid the first weekend of December to help this charity; or for those who lis- tened to the heart-pulling witness from Sara Moraille the second weekend of December who spoke of how im- portant it was for Alexandra’s House to be there and care for her husband, Jacques, herself and their children as they prepared for, undertook the funeral and burial and dealt with post-burial grief of their son who died before birth; and for those who have picked up newsletters from AH in the narthex or looked at all they offer on the narthex table, one cannot help realizing that this is a most important ministry that immeasurably aids, comforts and consoles those going through the heartbreak of the death of a child and as such is most deserving of our help. Patti Lewis, the foundress and director of AH, is amazing in how she reaches out to those most in need of the mercy of God at perhaps the most extremely excruciating time in peoples’ lives: handling the loss of a child. While we have had a basket to gather money for AH, I am happy to report that we have up a new, hand- some, wooden donation box. It is just to the right, on a column, as one looks at the St. Michael framed portrait by walking into or out of the church. That new donation box is identified by the strip above it. The box will serve to collect and hold donations for the “Donation of the Season” that we are sponsoring, e.g., Alexandra’s House that we are currently hosting. As it is the end-of-year time to consider getting a tax break for charitable donations, one wants to make sure that we have in all we wish to contribute for whatever our hearts tell us we need to support. I am most pleased to report that we are nearing the end of our donation goal for covering the entire cost of Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Angels Adoration Chapel. Pretty much we are roughly within only $57,000 left to be able to have everything we had envisioned for the chapel done and paid for. In the next bulletin I will report more exactly on the amount we have left to cover for it. With end of the year charitable contributions, we hope that goal will be all the closer before long. The donation box to give for the chapel is inside the front doors of the main church to the right on the side table as you enter. Please open your heart to contributing in charity to all those projects—most especially to those individuals with whom we come into contact who need a helping hand, a kind smile, a warm heart and caring ways—when your charity can make a total difference in others’ lives before and at the Christmas Season.

In the Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Richard Mc Donald, the Pastor

December 16, 2018 • 2nd Sunday of Advent | 3 Rejoice in the Lord always… I say it again: rejoice! And thus begins the entrance antiphon for this Third Sunday of Advent, when we rejoice in a special way with our readings and with special, rose-colored vestments because the Lord is near and Christmas is near. Today even has a special name: Gaudete Sunday (Rejoicing Sunday). Today, our Advent focus turns to joy – Chris- tian joy – which Henri Nouwen described as “the experience of knowing that you are uncondition- ally loved and that nothing – not sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death – can take that love away.” With this in mind, we take a break from worrying about all that still needs to be done for Christmas and fo- cus instead on all the blessings that God has given us and the “joy to the world” that we’ll celebrate soon – on Christmas Day.

3RD THURSDAY FOOD & FUN, December 20th, join in a Potluck dinner at 11:30 am at the Hall. Bring a dish (meat, veggie, dessert, whatever) with you. We will eat at NOON and after lunch will play dominoes, cards or board games. A great way to have fun and meet some new friends. Questions - call Jennifer at 369-3137 or Jenny at 369-5787.

FOOD KITCHEN NEWS: On Tuesday, Dec. 4th, 15 parishioners helped to feed 306 guests at the food kitchen. They took 43 casseroles, ham, hot dogs and vegetables. $116 was given to help with utilities. The Food Kitchen served it’s 5 millionth meal since it started in 1982 on that day. Holy Angels served 2,822 meals in 2018. God bless your continued support of this most vital ministry!

On the evening of December 6, Jim & Eve Cope and Tom & Janet Johnson shared their practical and spiritual experiences of the separate pilgrimages they made to Lourdes this past sum- mer to a large appreciative crowd. For those interested in learning more, EWTN hosts a Facebook page called "EWTN Virtual Pil- grimage Lourdes" that does exactly what it prom- ises -- offering an up-close and virtual experience of Lourdes. You can also check out "Our Lady of the Rosary" on Facebook and pray a live- streaming rosary from Lourdes. Finally, if your heart pulls you to serve as a volunteer in Lourdes, there are a variety of organ- izations in the U.S. that organize such volunteers. Find out more at LourdesVolunteers.org.
