Sexual abuse in the Catholic Church: A look at the strides In his recent visit to the , Pope Benedict XVI direct- ly acknowledged the great suffering that has resulted from the sex- ual abuse of minors. At the same time, the Holy Father fairly pointed out that “great efforts have … been made to deal honestly and fairly with this tragic situation, and to ensure that children— whom our Lord loves deeply and who are our greatest treasure— can grow up in a safe environment.” It is vital for the Church to vigorously review the history of child sexual abuse; as is often noted, one who does not know history is bound to repeat it. At the same time, it is equally important to acknowledge the energy and resources the Church has dedicated to the prevention of sexual abuse in more recent years. Analysis of the strides the Church has made not only reinforces the positive steps it has taken, it lights the way to further progress as it continues to move forward.
