You Might Be a Good Rider If… Riding tips to make you a better motorcycle rider. By Ken Condon October 26, 2016 When asked, the majority of motorcyclists consider themselves "good" riders. The problem is that we suck at meas- uring our own abilities. This behavior is common enough that psych experts gave it a name. The Dunning-Kruger effect describes how average people suffer from the illusion that their ability is much greater than it really is.

To help determine whether a rider suffers from this delusion we need to define our terms. Most people say a good rider is one who displays impressive control skills on the racetrack or in the canyons, can perform a lengthy standup wheelie, or can precisely maneuver an 800-pound motorcycle within tight confines. Sure, these highly de- veloped physical abilities deserve to be recognized, but being a good rider also requires good judgment, sharp visu- al skills, and effective survival strategies. The best riders also have a humble attitude that allows them to accurately evaluate their abilities.

Good riders rarely experience close calls. This isn’t because they’re lucky but because they don’t let bad things happen to them. They understand that drivers have a hard time seeing motorcycles, so they constantly utilize dy- namic lane positioning and other effective strategies to make themselves more visible in traffic.

These riders have a well-developed sixth sense that foresees hazards before they materialize. Developing this sense isn't that hard, but it requires a high level of alertness to spot the sometimes-subtle clues that warn of an un- folding situation. And when a problem does occur, they resist blaming others because they know that most mishaps can be avoided through their own actions.

Good riders know the limits of their ability, the environment, and their bike and ride within those limits. They never blast through busy areas or enter a corner faster than they can safely negotiate it. They have the ability to place their bike precisely where they want it at anytime. This precision allows them to corner faster than most riders, but they choose to enter curves at a speed that ensures a healthy margin for error. They know that if they enter a turn a bit slower than necessary, they can always get on the gas sooner.

Besides these primary skills, the best riders also strive to brake and accelerate smoothly to preserve available trac- tion and stabilize the bike’s chassis. They’ve learned the language of handing dynamics and tire loading, using them to understand what the bike and tires are saying about the limits of control and traction.

The best riders are eager to learn and practice new techniques and continually hone existing techniques. They seek advice and training from known reliable sources because they understand that there is always more to learn, no matter how long they’ve been riding. Smart riders know that seat time and experience alone don’t make them better if all they’re doing is repeating mistakes and bad habits. Someone might have ridden for 20 years, but too often these riders have one year of experience, repeated 20 times.

No matter how good a rider you think you are, it’s likely you have at least a few skills that could use some work. You probably also have some bad habits, dangerous attitudes, and inaccurate perceptions about riding that can develop over time without you knowing it. And unless you’re actively improving your braking and cornering skills, you’re probably not as good as you think at controlling your bike near the limit.

This description doesn’t constitute a complete list of good rider characteristics, but you can be sure that the best riders possess each of these traits. Do you?

DISTRICT 2 What a difference a month makes! Hard to believe that in that short amount of time, we could go from 30 below to riding weather. We've had some rain to help clear the roads and now we're all itching to get some well-deserved wind therapy. Just remember, there will still be lots of sand and rock in the corners and curves for a while so pro- ceed with a degree of caution. Also remember, cagers haven't been looking for you for a few months and they weren't looking very hard anyway. So, keep you and yours safe and take nothing for granted. It seems like their two most popular excuses are " I didn't see him" and "he had to be speeding, he came out of nowhere." RIDE DEFEN- SIVELY and keep them from using those excuses at your expense. Also, share the road responsibly and don't ride impaired. We must do our part if we are ever going to achieve our goals. As I write this, LB 581, Senator Hansen's bill to modify the lid mandate is still being held up in committee. I'm not sure how it's going to play out but I'm never going to throw in the towel. If we can get this bill to the floor, I think we still have a decent chance of getting it passed. Of course, nothing is a sure thing, but I still like our chances. We just need to open our opponents’ eyes to the fact that our goals are the same: keeping motorcyclists alive. We all know that enhanced riders training and greater education and awareness of the non- riding public will save more lives by preventing crashes. Helmets may only be of benefit after a crash has occurred. Let's try to do a better job of getting our message out. Our next meeting will be at 7 pm on Wednesday, April 14th at the First Avenue Social Hall in Lincoln. Come out and join us and help us get our message out. Until then... Enjoy the Ride! Dist 4 District 4 held their meeting on Feb 27, 2021 in Humphrey at Mugs n Jugs. The Pledge was said and a moment of silence was held. Secretary and Treasurer reports read and accepted. Legislature information was given by John. Discussed how to send an appropriate email to litigate a response from your senator. Chili Feed for 2022 in discussion to move to Columbus. Agreed on an amount to send to the State General Fund from proceeds of Chili Fundraiser. BOD meeting is scheduled for April 11th. New Business: Discussed having a booth at the NE State Fair. Julia mentioned this to a few District 3/8 members to discuss at their meeting. Also was an idea to have a booth at US 30 Speedway night. U.S. 30 Speedway is an IMCA Sanc- tioned 1/3- mile clay oval track. Located 3 miles west of Columbus on Hwy 30. Thunder by the River is August 20 and 21. Next meeting April 27th in Columbus NE at Miceks Shangri-La 2 pm. Adjourned meeting. Julia Wombacher District 4 Secretary ABATE of NE Dist. 6 District 6 held their March meeting at Grant St Bar on March 7th. We would like to thank Michelle, Wayne, and Mike for hosting us. The meeting was brought to order by Jim Lorence with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of si- lence for our lost brothers and sisters and those serving in the military. Upcoming Events: March 28th – April Meet- ing; May 2nd – May Meeting; June 6th – June Meeting; June 11th, 12th, &13th – Bike Show; June 27th – July Meet- ing; August 1st – Aug Meeting; August 29th – Sept Meeting We began our meeting with a legislation report. LB 581 is stuck in the transportation committee the stall seems to be a 4 to 4 vote and with The Second Amendment and Gun issues, it’s not a bad thing to be on hold. He wanted to em- phasize how important itis that we continue to battle for our 2nd amendment rights too. We are asking that everyone finds out who represents your districts and to reach out them, call, write letters or emails. Again, we are the only state in the Mid-West without the choice to wear a helmet or not. We had Kevin from Lincoln join us at our meeting and he told us that he and others from Lincoln have spoken with NE DOT regarding our bill. On top of getting the bill approved, we are also working on getting more educational information provided when teens and adults who are get- ting their permits and licenses. We are also still looking at getting a grant to get promotional videos or ads for our Share the Road class. We will always be promoting LOOK TWICE, SAVE A LIFE. As our overall goal is to prevent any motorcycle deaths in NE. Iowa Currently requires a STR driver’s safety class, IN THE 11TH GRADE, whereas NE does not. We again ask, that you reach out to your Senators to help push our cause. If you are unsure who your Senator for your district is, you can look online or reach out to Jim Lorence. Someone also asked what happened with Lobby Day, since we were not able to attend in January. The net result, it made it to transportation and was stalled right now we just need to focus on applying pressure to our Senators. Cont’d to pg. 8 7 RIGHT TO RIDE

Dist. 6 cont’d from pg 7

We currently have approximately 28 on our side and need 33 for the bill to pass closure. Please remember that we are asking the Senators to put their emotions to the side when voting on LB 581. We believe that our chances are just as good, if not better than they have been in years past. The next business of order was discussing our Bike Show that we will be hosting June 11th through the 13th. This year we will have 3 categories: Antique, Peo- ple’s Choice, and Best Paint Prizes for all first places. All attendees will be allowed to vote including children. We do ask that you remember that we will NOT be allowing anyone under 21 at the event after 6 pm. We have booked “The 70’s Band” for entertainment and will be having a food truck all day and snacks. A big thank you to J. Dubs Hang Out, so we will have a Beer garden and mixed drinks. (More to Come)

The Gun Raffle for this year will be for a S&W AR MP with (100 rounds of Ammo). The tickets will be sold ONE For $5 or 5 for $20. If you would like to purchase tickets, please reach out to an ABATE member. If you would like to sell ticket books, please contact Stoner. We closed our meeting by discussing the possibly of setting up a scholarship for people who do not currently have a motorcycle endorsement and may not be able to afford the class. Jim also advised that currently riding without one is a slap on the wrist and the new bill may change that. We would also like to ask that our members go back to supporting the businesses that support us now that some of the COVID restrictions are being relaxed. We need to be supporting those that support us, especially after the year we have all had. We also discussed new LOCAL charities for us to support (wounded warriors), disabled vets of America, etc.), but as you know, OAB will always be a charity we support. If you know of any local charities that we could investigate, please let Jim know, or let us know at our next meeting. We thank all our sponsors for continuing to support us through these times! Saddlebag – The saddlebag was at $20, Marty Novy’s name was drawn, and he was not present. Next month the saddlebag will be at $30. 50/50 –Alaina Madsen had the winning ticket and donated a portion back to the General Fund. The motion to adjourn was made by Roger Ites and se-

For Immediate Release March 16, 2021 The MRF pushes back on EPA about Current Ethanol Labeling Requirements This week the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) joined other national groups in pushing back on proposed rule changes to current ethanol labeling requirements. Representatives of manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers of boats, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and outdoor power equipment made clear that elimination or changes to cur- rent E-15 labels at fuel pumps would cause irreparable harm to millions of consumers.

In a letter to the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Administrator Michael Regan, the group stated that, “The misfuelling of marine engines and vessels, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and outdoor power equipment places significant burdens on both the American consumer and product manufacturers. The risk to con- sumers is that they will experience product damage, compromised performance and emissions requirements, eco- nomic loss, and fuel leaks resulting in unsafe products.” As a reminder, in January the EPA proposed elimination of the current E15 label altogether or the significant chang- es listed below: Cont’d pg. 16

SHARE THE ROAD is a motorcycle awareness program that promotes driver awareness and increases under- standing of how motorcycles behave in traffic. ABATE of Nebraska, Inc. provides trained volunteers to present this program to the public. We believe that education and training are the best ways to prevent, and thereby re- duce, motorcycle/automobile accidents. Research shows that three fourths of crashes involving a motorcycle also involves another motor vehicle, which is usually at fault. Considering crash statistics and the increasing number of motorcyclists, the key to a safer rid- ing mix is learning to SHARE THE ROAD. Motorcycles are very different from automobiles - they are much smaller in size & are harder to see then automo- biles. The failure of motorists to see motorcyclists in traffic is the most common cause of crashes. Car drivers who are involved in an accident with a motorcycle often do not see the motorcycle prior to the accident, or until it is too late to avoid having the accident. The greatest risk area for a conflict between a motorcycle and a automobile is at an intersection...whether it is in the middle of an urban area, a driveway on a residential street, or anywhere where traffic may cross your path of travel. Over one half of motorcycle/car accidents are caused by drivers entering a rider's right-of-way. Cars that turn left in from of motorcyclists, including cars turning left from the lane to the right, and cars on side streets that pull into the motorcyclists lane are the biggest dangers. The fact remains.....the best way to prevent any accident is through Education, Safety, and Motorcycle Aware- ness Programs like SHARE THE ROAD.

JULY 08 2020 3:00 PM/LIFESTYLE AMERICAN IRON MAGAZINE CEASES PUBLICATION

American Iron Magazine, once the “#1 Motorcycle Magazine on the Newsstand,” is suspending publication after 31 years. American Iron Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Buzz Kanter made the announcement on AIM’s social me- dia channels today. American Iron was the go-to magazine for Harley enthusiasts for many years, but the print industry has become particularly challenging in the ever-shifting paradigm of motorcycle content production. “Sad news that we are suspending publication of @AmericanIronMag as we explore our options. What an amazing 31-year ride and thanks to everyone who supported us,” posted Kanter on Twitter. I had the distinction of working for American Iron for a couple of years and am proud to have worked alongside a dedicated, talented crew. American Iron put out a highly polished product and maintained high standards. The effects of dwindling advertising dollars for the print industry and the residual effect of diminishing page counts could be felt before my departure, but it was an honor to be a part of its history. “Big loss to the sport and industry Buzz. But you and the crew have a lot to be proud of, and your legacy lives on,” – posted Harley-Davidson’s Paul James on Twitter. Here’s the announcement on American Iron’s Face- book page. AMERICAN IRON SUSPENDS PUBLICATION American Iron Magazine, published since 1989, has suspended publication.

15 RIGHT TO RIDE

Cont’d from pg. 15 The world has changed significantly. The motorcycle business has changed. And the magazine industry has too. Unfortunately, not for the better - short or long term. For the last 31 years our team has worked hard responding successfully to the trends, opportunities, and changes. But when our advertising crashed with the recent spread of the virus, we ran out of options. We trimmed the page count and content in our magazines, but that was not enough to make a difference. Rather than watch our magazines decline even further, we have suspended publication as we explore our options. It is not an easy decision for American Iron Magazine, American Iron Garage and American Iron Salute, but it is the right one. The last issue of American Iron Magazine was Issue #390, on sale last week. Since 1989, I have been fortunate to work with really great editors, art directors and contributors who were dedicated, creative, hardworking, and smart. They had to be to achieve what we did for more than three decades. And a big thanks to all of our readers and ad- vertisers, who supported our efforts so passionately. Rather than dwell on the end of our magazines, I hope you'll join us remembering your favorite articles, writers, photographers, and events that we have enjoyed over the years. There have been so many. Thank you one and all for your support, encouragement, and friendship. It's been a heck of a ride.

Removing the “Attention” stripe along the upper right corner of the label. Removing the phrase “E15” from the label, while including the language “contains up to 15% percent ethanol”. Revising the language “Use only in” to “Safe for use in”. Revising the language “Don’t use in” to “Avoid use in”. Revising the format of the word “prohibited” such that it is not in bold and italicized type. The MRF has long advocated consumer education to combat the increased prevalence of E15 nationwide. The let- ter to EPA points out that a recent survey shows, “Three in five consumers mistakenly assume E15 is safe for all their products.” Additionally, consumers should be aware that many manufacturer warranties are voided if improper fuel is used. MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES HISTORIC FIRST

Atlanta, Georgia – The Motorcycle Riders Foundation, based in Washington, D.C., along with ABATE of Georgia, announced a historic first with the announcement that the organization’s annual Meeting of the Minds Conference will take place in Atlanta in September this year.

“The MRF has met several times in the Southeast. However, we have never had the opportunity to meet in Atlanta, and we’re looking forward to the occasion.” MRF Conferences and Events Director, Fredric Harrell announced at the organization’s 2020 annual conference in Indianapolis in September.

“ABATE of Georgia worked to meet the MRF’s conference guidelines and we’re reaching out to our neighboring state motorcyclists’ rights organizations for participation.” Donna Nunez, ABATE of Georgia Activities Director, said when the 2021 conference was announced.

This “historic first” will bring the 2021 Annual Meeting of the Minds Conference to the JW Marriott Atlanta Buckhead Hotel, September 23-26 and will be the kick-off point for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s 2022 legislative agen- da. Attendees are encouraged to make reservations as early as possible for this much-demanded conference.

Past keynote speakers at the annual event include, Keith “Bandit” Ball, former editor of Magazine, Dave Zein, former Wisconsin State Senator, Paul Landers, Texas Freedom Fighter, & Slider Gilmore, Freedom Fighters & Motorcycling Safety Advocates, Mark Buckner, Former MRF President & current MRF Executive Direc- tor, among other notables who have added insight, levity and strong messages on freedom and individual rights to the MRF’s annual conference. Conference agenda includes, but never limited to general sessions, 15 break-out sessions, safe riding demonstrations and awards banquet.

The first Meeting of the Minds Conference, held in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1985 witnessed barely 100 motorcyclists’ rights advocates and a very limited agenda. The Meeting of the Minds Conference has grown to over 500 partici- pants from state motorcyclists’ rights advocacy groups in addition to representatives from Canada, the European Union, Australia, and Liberia.
