Understanding Summer Visitors and their Attitudes to the Kopaonik National Park, Serbia. Baltic Forestry 22(2): 315-326. Abstract Kopaonik Mountain is the oldest ski resort in Serbia and the most visited mountain as it has good facilities for both summer and winter outdoor recreation. Kopaonik is distinguished by a high level of biodiversity and it has been a national park since 1981. The aim of the present study is to understand the visitors’ attitudes related to this area and to incorporate them with the purpose of improving the management of the natural and recreational resources of this protected area. A face to face survey was carried out in order to examine the ways, in which visitors use this area, to see if they are satisfied with the management of Kopaonik Mountain and to examine their attitudes towards the improvement of the recreational area of Kopaonik. The results show that middle-aged employers, who prevail among the tourists questioned, visit the mountain once per year (during spring or summer) and stay for 7-10 days. People mostly come from the capital city of Belgrade and visit the ski areas of Kopaonik Mountain for passive vacation and leisure activities (walking and enjoying nature).

Karsten) natural populations situated in Serbia, belonging to the southern lineage of the species at the southern margin of the species distribution range. Four populations occur as disjunct populations on the outskirts of the Dinaric Alps mountain chain, whereas one is located at the edge of Balkan Mountain range and, therefore, can be considered as ecologically marginal due to drier climatic conditions occurring in this region.

Being both natural barriers and safe havens not only for people, but also for fl ora and fauna, the mountains have been instrumental in shaping the Europe of today. Europe harbours large transboundary mountain groups that are located in dynamic geopolitical regions: the Balkan and Dinaric Arc, the Carpathians and the Caucasus. These mountain regions have global signifi cance as they provide goods and ecosystems services essential for sustainable development, in particular to the lowlands and the communities living in these areas. Nonetheless, mountains are highly vulnerable to global change. Given the tight highland-lowland linkage, these changes may have serious impacts far beyond the moun- tain boundaries. THE MOUNTAINS OF CENTRAL, EASTERN AND SOUTH- EASTERN EUROPE AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Europe’s mountainous macro-regions are partly developing dynamically while also experiencing political and economic marginalization, and in some cases still territorial disputes and confl ict resulting from the past.

One could say that he is destined, after making the earth uninhabitable, to destroy himself” Jean Baptiste Lamarck (Zoological Philosophy, 1809). Two centuries after Lamarck recorded these thoughts, it is as if we were only a step away from fulfilling his alarming prophecy. Today, unfortunately, it is possible to state that man’s influence over the environment has never been as intensive, extensive or far-reaching. The explosive, exponential growth of the world’s population, coupled with a rapid depletion of natural resources and incessant accumulation of various pollutants, provides a dramatic warning of the severity of the situation at the beginning of the third millennium.

The species is a regionally (2) important timber species for the wood industry and a significant host for vari- Tine Grebenc , ous ectomycorrhizal fungi, including edible species. We analysed ectomycor- Marko Bajc (2), rhizal community and fine root parameters of high continental / subalpine Nor- Saša Pekeč (1), way spruce stands at three sites (Stara planina, Kopaonik, Tara) located in pro- (1) tected areas in Serbia. In addition, we assessed the potential effects of alti- Milan Drekić , tude and growing season on the ectomycorrhizal diversity and fine root param- (2) Hojka Kraigher eters. Using standardised sampling in combination with morpho-anatomical and molecular identification of ectomycorrhizae, we recorded 29 different anatomorphotypes. None of the identified fungi belonged to commercial edi- ble fungal species. Compared to other Norway spruce ectomycorrhiza studies in central Europe, sites in Serbia exhibited lower species diversity and differ- ent dominant species composition, with Cenococcum spp. and Russula spp. as the dominant ectomycorrhizal fungi. A number of ectomycorrhizal types and the value of the species richness index differed between Stara planina and Tara in the autumn, but the influence of site and season on the studied diver- sity indices was not significant. The total number of fine roots increased in the spring, while percentage of vital ectomycorrhizal root tips increased in the au- tumn.
