First things first means that if you have large priorities, you should complete those before you do anything else that’s less important. For example, if you need to do your homework but you also want to watch a new episode of your favorite show, do your homework first because homework is more important than watching your favorite show. The show will still be there when you finish your homework. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12pvUcZWiTuz789xo_xH0zniYF Nmq0AV5iu7246Jo5bI/edit

February is American Heart Month. American Heart Month is when our country spotlights heart disease. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared it for the first time in 1964. He was among the millions of people who suffered from heart attacks and he wanted to raise awareness about the disease. US presidents have been doing this ever since. Friday, February 5th is National Wear Red Day, when people like news anchors wear red to raise awareness and support the battle against heart disease. During this pandemic, many people with symptoms of heart disease have avoided going to hospitals for treatment. The American Heart Association launched a campaign to remind people that it’s important to go to hospitals if you have symptoms. During American Heart Month let’s try to stay heart healthy by exercising and eating healthy food. Let’s be Heart Healthy!

The week of March 8-12 was Literacy Week for our middle schools. During Literacy Week, both middle schools gave students opportunities to participate in all sorts of fun, book-related activities. Each day there were different activities and on Friday the twelfth there was a literacy-related, school-wide Kahoot. Also on Friday, author Gordon Corman visited our schools in a joint virtual assembly. He shared his journey to becoming an author and his experience as a writer. Mr. Corman told us that he wrote his frst book when he was in seventh grade, when he was twelve years old. He wrote the book as part of an assignment for English class. Corman sent the book, named This Can't Be Happening at Macdonald Hall, to Scholastic and it was published a few years later. Corman answered questions from students, many about the stories behind his books. He spoke about his popular books including, War Stories, The Unteachables, Restart, Unplugged, and the Sixth Grade Nickname Game. He also talked about his newest book, Linked, which is coming out in July of 2021. Plainview Old-Bethpage Literacy Week was a week full of amazing activities that taught us all a little something about literacy.

By, Alisha Bajaj Smoking is Stupid!

Have you ever seen a family member or friend smoke a cigarette before? Read this article to find how to help them quit! Smoking is stupid. Smoking is stupid because it kills about 67% of smokers, it has dangerous chemicals, and nearly 1 billion people smoke.

Smoking; The Invisible Devil Smoking can affect many people around the world. Why? Well because there are 3 different types of smoking, there is first-hand smoking, second-hand smoking, and third-hand smoking.

First-hand smoking; First-hand smoking is when a smoker inhales their own smoke from the cigarette. According to google “first-hand smoke refers to the smoke inhaled by a smoker” This means that, first-hand smoke is when a smoker inhales the smoke from the cigarette.

Second-hand smoke is when a non-smoker is targeted by the smoke from a cigarette. According to, “Medivizor” it states that “Study after study confirms the risks for non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke. Reviews have shown that even brief exposures can affect the lungs in adverse ways.” This means that, if a non-smoker is exposed to smoke it can affect them.

Third-hand smoking is when a smoker smokes in their house or car and the chemicals are left in the area. According to, “Thirdhand smoke is residual nicotine and other chemicals left on indoor surfaces by tobacco smoke. People are exposed to these chemicals by touching contaminated surfaces or breathing in the off-gassing from these surfaces. This residue is thought to react with common indoor pollutants to create a toxic mix including cancer causing compounds, posing a potential health hazard to nonsmokers — especially children.” This means that not only the smoker is affected by smoking but everyone around them is too.

The Murderer : Smoking Smoking kills 67% of the population, and that's on a weekly basis. Pretty horrible right? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that there are dangerous ingredients in smoking!! The ingredients in smoking can be dangerous for everyone! According to google the ingredients in smoking are: “tiny solid particles including phenols, nicotine and naphthalene. The major gases include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrogen cyanide and the liquid vapours include formaldehyde, methane, benzene, ammonia and acetone.” This shows what is in these deadly cigarettes!

Did you know that there can be metal in a cigarette?! According to google it states that “The presence of trace amounts of metals in tobacco smoke has been known for some time [4]. Those most commonly associated with health effects include arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb).” This is horrible! If you don’t want to be smoking metal all day you should probably quit!

I’m Not A Quitter! You are probably thinking everyone will quit when they read this right? Wrong. Some people know the dangers but will not quit because they have either been smoking for a long time or they just don’t think their friends will like them or many other reasons.

According to “Ash.org” it states “Quitting is difficult for many reasons, such as advertising, social pressures, and/or failure to use cessation tools effectively. But quitting smoking is hard for one overarching reason: addiction.” This shows that teens have friends who pressure them to do something in this case smoke what is this called? Peer pressure. Adults don’t quit because of the persuasive commercials and because they are very addicted to the chemical: nicotine.

Be a Superhero You can really help a family member or friend quit smoking! If you tell them these reasons I guarantee they will keep it in mind. So today we learned, 67% of smokers die from smoking, smoking has dangerous chemicals, and why it kills 1 billion people.

“Smoking Stupid” Research credits: Google, Medivizor and Ash.org Quit smoking! Be a hero!

GO HAWKS! Homemade Twisted Soft Pretzels

This is a great recipe for a person who wants to spend time with their family, and make delicious foods! These pretzels came out crispy and soft! Prep Time: 25 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 40 minutes Yield: 12 pretzels

This is one of the easiest ways to prepare homemade soft pretzels and the results are amazing! The dough only needs to rest for 10 minutes before shaping it into a pretzel. The quick baking soda boil gives the pretzels their traditional flavor. There are pictures of how to shape the pretzels, step by step, included at the end.

Ingredients

1 and 1/2 cups (360ml) warm water 1 packet active dry or instant yeast (2 and 1/4 teaspoons) 1 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon brown sugar or granulated sugar 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter, melted and slightly cool 3 and 3/4-4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface coarse sea salt for sprinkling parchment paper Cookie sheet Nonstick Cooking Spray Stand mixer with dough hook attachment

1. Whisk the yeast into warm water. Allow to sit for 1 minute. Whisk in salt, brown sugar, and melted butter. Slowly add 3 cups of flour, 1 cup at a time. Mix with the dough hook attached to a stand mixer, (like a Kitchen Aid) until dough is thick. Add 3/4 cup more flour until the dough is no longer sticky. If it is still sticky, add 1/4 – 1/2 cup more, as needed. Poke the dough with your finger – if it bounces back, it is ready to knead. 2. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for 3 minutes and shape into a ball. Cover lightly with a towel and allow to rest for 10 minutes. (Meanwhile, I like to get the water + baking soda boiling! Preheat oven to 400°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and lightly spray with nonstick spray Set baking sheets aside.

With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut dough into 1/3 cup sections.

3. Roll the dough (in your hands, like Playdoh) into a 15-20 inch rope. Take the ends and draw them together so the dough forms a circle. Twist the ends, then bring them towards yourself and press them down into a pretzel shape. 4. With the baking soda bath boiling, drop 1-2 pretzels into the boiling water for 20-30 seconds. Any more than that and your pretzels will have a metallic taste. Using a slotted spatula, lift the pretzel out of the water and allow the water to drip off. Place pretzel onto the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle each with coarse sea salt. Repeat with remaining pretzels. 5. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and serve warm. Pretzels may be stored in an airtight container or zip lock bag for up to 3 days (they lose a little softness).

1. Roll out dough 2. Twist Ends 3. Pull towards you By, Grayson Kies Cheesecake brownies!

We all love brownies, am I right? But when I buy the box of mix, I know that it never finishes in my house. It does get a little hard to eat the same type of brownies right? So I found this perfect recipe * thanks to allrecipes* that uses the brownie mix!

Ingredients 1. 1 (19.8 ounce) package brownie mix 2. 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese 3. 1 egg 4. ⅓ cup of white sugar * if you don’t have the brownie mix then go to the recipe here for the first part. Or make any brownie recipe that you have! https://www.loveandlemons.com/?s=brownies&submit=

Directions 1. Prepare the brownie mix as directed by the manufacturer. Preheat the oven to the temperature indicated on the box. Grease a 9x13 inch pan. 2. Spread the brownie batter evenly into the prepared pan. Using an electric mixer, beat together the cream cheese, egg and sugar until smooth. Dollop the cream cheese mixture on top of the brownie batter. Swirl together using a knife or skewer. ( this is the fun part ;) 3. Bake according to manufacturer's instructions. Brownies will be done when a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in the pan, then cut into bars and serve!!! https://www.allrecipes.com/video/8806/cheesecake-brownies/ Go here to watch the video that I got my recipe from!

By, Ishani Gandotra Things to do While Quarantined!

We all love vacations, right? Sadly this year it just really isn't possible. So because of COVID-19 all of our lives have changed! You probably got the chance to do more things then you would have done, like I learned how to bake, and I spent a lot of time with my family! Yes, it did not satisfy us and we did not do our normal, so we should change how our lifestyles are these days! Here is a great list of things to do while we are all quarantined!

1. Go on a road trip! - I recently did, and it is really great because I got to go to a new environment and I was not stuck in my home. - 2. Do some arts and crafts! - In our very own newspaper we have Grayson Kies with two arts and crafts so you can go and check them out! - 3. Write to your friends! - yes we don´t really do these types of things anymore because we have advanced technology for this, but it would be great if we started that again! - 4. Watch some movies! - I know that I avoided a lot of movies since they were really long, but now I don't really have anything else to do. - 5. Make a bulletin board! - my friends had the time to print pictures and get some ribbons and decorate their rooms with pictures of the past! - 6. Organize! - I know lots of kids don't enjoy these types of things but I think it is calming and satisfying to know that you have cleaned out an area in the house. 7. Read! - you don't have to read real books, you can read things to help you inform what is happening around the world! - 8. Indoor Camping! - you probably can't go camping so do it indoors! Clear out a room and make a spot for sleeping and enjoy the in/ out doors! - 9. Clean out your phone! - I know that I had lots of pictures in my that I didn't need anymore, so cleaning it out and taking new pictures helped a lot! - 10. Be an author! - try writing a book with your family and choose a character to write about! -

I hope you enjoy all of these activities as much as I did!

By, Mona Ismail St. Patrick’s Day History

The History and Fun Facts of St.Patricks’ Day Saint Patrick didn’t always live in Ireland. Patrick was born in Britain in the fourth century and didn’t arrive in Ireland until he was 16 years old.

The fact that Ireland is an island green with leafy trees and grassy hills means that the nation is sometimes called the Emerald Isle. But the color that people originally associated with St. Patrick was blue! Green was finally introduced to St. Patrick’s Day festivities in the 18th century when the shamrock became a national symbol. Because of the shamrock’s popularity and Ireland’s landscape, the color stuck to St. Patrick’s day!

I’m sure you often see four-leaf clovers, which represent St. Patrick’s Day. However, according to legend, Patrick used a three-leaf clover as part of his teachings in the Catholic Church. Even though it's possible for a shamrock to grow a fourth leaf, a four-leaf clover is just considered a symbol of good luck.

I started to head out to go trick or treating as I stumbled across a creepy house in the middle of the woods with vines all over it. I slowly went up to the house, being aware of my surroundings as I heard what sounded like an old lady chuckling. Suddenly I felt something scratch me. The next thing I know I woke up in a creepy dungeon with a huge scratch on my stomach. I heard a dripping sound. I decided to follow the noise and in the dungeon, I saw lots of cages with animals and what looked like test subjects. I quickly saw stairs and I slowly went up to it and I slowly went up one stair and the stairs made a sound and again I heard that old lady chuckling. I felt another scratch and I woke up in the same spot but the door was locked and this time there was a huge scratch on my face. I caught a glimpse of what looked like an old lady with a black cat. Walking up the stairs. I quickly started looking for a key but I only found something that said antidote. I was confused. I also found a paperclip and a big sword. I put the antidote in my pocket, took the sword, and picked the lock with the paperclip. Rushed for the stairs. I thought to myself I can get out of here but as I went up the stairs an alarm rang and all the animal’s eyes turned bright red and their cages opened. Suddenly they started coming after me. I tried running up the stairs but the door was locked so I went back downstairs and tried to defend myself with my sword without hurting any animals. I thought to myself that these animals were not behaving normally so I thought the old lady might be controlling them. Then I remembered that I found a bottle that said antidote and I led all the animals together and I jumped and smashed the bottle on the floor. The animal’s eyes turned normal and they were acting so happy and they came with me upstairs to get the lady and the cat. They smashed open the locked door and the old lady was saying to us take what you want but please don't touch me or my cat Sadie! I said ok and then we left and I returned the animals into the woods and they were sad to see me go. I left and continued trick or treating but not in the woods and I never will tell my parents what just happened. I had a bit more antidote and I rubbed it on my scratches and they went away. I came home with a full bag of candy and my parents asked how it was trick or treating. I said it was really fun lying to them and that never happened to anyone again until… to be continued.
