A new scientific center has just opened at Singapore’s Science Drive 2: its efforts are focused on revealing nature’s uttermost secrets. The place attracts many young, talented and eccentric physicists, among them some Poles. This summer night is as hot as any other night in the equatorial Singapore (December ones included). Five men, seated at a table in one of the city’s countless bars, are about to finish another pitcher of local beer. They are Artur Ekert, a Polish-born cryptologist and a Research Fellow at Merton College at the University of Oxford (profiled in issue 27 of POLITYKA); Leong Chuan Kwek, a Singapore native; Briton Hugo Cable; Brazilian Marcelo Franca Santos; and Björn Hessmo of Sweden. While enjoying their drinks, they are also trying to find a trace of comprehensive tactics in the chaotic mess of ball-kicking they are watching on a plasma screen above: a soccer game played somewhere halfway across the world. “My father always wanted me to become a soccer player. And I have failed him so miserably,” says Hessmo. His words are met with a nod of understanding. So far, the game has provided the men with no excitement.     The work of Wendelin Werner Charles M. Newman∗ 1. Introduction It is my great pleasure to briefly report on some of Wendelin Werner’s research ac- complishments that have led to his being awarded a Fields Medal at this International Congress of Mathematicians of 2006. There are a number of aspects of Werner’s work that add to my pleasure in this event. One is that he was trained as a probabilist, receiving his Ph.D. in 1993 under the supervision of Jean-François Le Gall in Paris with a dissertation concerning planar Brownian Motion – which, as we shall see, plays a major role in his later work as well. Until now, Probability Theory had not been represented among Fields Medals and so I am enormously pleased to be here to witness a change in that history. I myself was originally trained, not in Probability Theory, but in Mathematical Physics. Werner’s work, together with his collaborators such as Greg Lawler, Oded Schramm and Stas Smirnov, involves applications of Probablity and Conformal Map- ping Theory to fundamental issues in Statistical Physics, as we shall discuss. A second source of pleasure is my belief that this, together with other work of recent years, represents a watershed in the interaction between Mathematics and Physics generally. Namely, mathematicians such as Werner are not only providing rigorous proofs of already existing claims in the Physics literature, but beyond that are provid- ing quite new conceptual understanding of basic phenomena – in this case, a direct geometric picture of the intrinsically random structure of physical systems at their critical points (at least in two dimensions).

The United Kingdom is likely to be confirmed next month at the United Nations climate change summit in Madrid as the host of the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2020. Next year’s summit, which your Government has indicated will take place in Glasgow, will be absolutely vital to international efforts to avoid dangerous climate change. Parties to the Paris Agreement are expected to submit ahead of the summit revised nationally determined contributions which include more ambitious pledges to reduce annual emissions of greenhouse gases. The United Kingdom has been attempting to lead by example on climate change and has reduced its annual production of emissions of greenhouse gases by 44 per cent between 1990 and 2018, while increasing its gross domestic product by about 75 per cent over the same period. The United Kingdom’s consumption emissions have also started to decline. Although the United Kingdom is currently not on track to meet its fourth and fifth carbon budgets, according to the Committee on Climate Change, the UK Government made a very significant advance on domestic policy earlier this year by successfully securing the passage of legislation through Parliament to strengthen the Climate Change Act such that the new target is to reduce annual emissions of greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050.

I work on the role played by oceans on climate.
