This venue will also host the conclusion of the handball tournaments and Paralympic wheelchair basketball and rugby. An impressive white cloud-like structure, it looks light in spite of its very large size – 35m tall and large enough to fit a jumbo jet inside. It is expected to be lit up by coloured lighting London 2012 during the Games, similarly to Bayern Munich’s impressive football stadium. The Basketball Arena was designed and built specifically as a temporary structure and is North Greenwich Arena set to be dismantled following the Paralympic (formerly O2 Arena and Millennium Dome) Games, to be reused for other major sporting Location: and non-sporting events, fitting into the Drawdock Road, Greenwich Peninsula Organising Committee’s plans of delivering Year of construction: 1999 (redevelopment not only on the Games themselves, but also a 2007, 2012) legacy for sport in Britain. Spectators: 20,000 Estimated cost: £ 789,000,000 (Millennium Dome) Set to host the climax of the men’s (Quarter- Finals onwards) and the women’s (Semi-Finals onwards) basketball tournaments (as well as gymnastics), the North Greenwich Arena is the largest indoor Olympic venue for 2012. With a height exceeding 50m, the marquee-like structure is supported by 12 pillars of 100m extending out of the canopy. Having become one of London’s most recognisable landmarks, the North Greenwich Arena is also among the city’s largest buildings. Originally built as a celebratory exhibition centre for the new millennium, it was redeveloped in 2007 into a multi-purpose entertainment venue, hosting concerts, sporting events as well as numerous other entertainment shows and events. The Dome, as it is commonly known to Londoners, is no stranger to basketball as it has previously hosted several NBA Europe games, including the first-ever regular season games played in Europe in March 2011, when the Toronto Raptors took on the New Jersey London 2012 Nets. 05 2012 woMEN’S OLYMPICS ANGOLA CZECH REPUBLIC AUSTRALIA france BRAZIL great britain CANADA russia CHINA turkey CROATIA USA 2012 WOMEN’S OLYMPICS 06 LONDON - 28 JULY - 11 AUGUST Qualifying process for the London 2012 Olympic Basketball Tournament for women According to the FIBA Internal Regulations, Olympic qualification is achieved as follows 12 teams will take part in the London 2012 Olympic Basketball Tournament for Women, from 28 July to 11 August. • 1 place for the host nation (Great Britain) • 1 place for the FIBA World Champion (USA) • 1 place for FIBA Americas (2011 FIBA Americas Championship winner | Brazil) • 1 place for FIBA Europe (EuroBasket 2011 winner | Russia) • 1 place for FIBA Africa (2011 FIBA Africa Championship winner | Angola) • 1 place for FIBA Asia (2011 FIBA Asia Championship winner | China) • 1 place for FIBA Oceania (2011 FIBA Oceania Championship winner | Australia) • 5 through Olympic Qualifying Tournament | Turkey, France, Czech Republic, London2012.fiba.com Croatia, Canada Your source for Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Ankara, Turkey, 25 June to 1 July. • Game Day Program Semi-Final 1
2018-19 WNBL Semi-final 1 v FRIDAY 25 JANUARY 6 PM DOORS OPEN 7 PM TIP-OFF AIS ARENA Round 15 Recap The final round of the regular season turned out to be more of a thriller than expected, with three out of the top four teams having to go to overtime. For the UC Capitals, a double overtime put the team’s winning streak at risk as Bendigo Spirit put everything on the line for the final game of WNBL19. But Marianna Tolo (27 points, 10 rebounds) and Kelsey Griffin (24 points, 20 rebounds stepped up to get the UC Capitals over the line. UC Capitals head coach, Paul Goriss, said that the close call was a great way to prepare the team for finals. “We haven’t been that behind in the last ten weeks, so having a game where we had to fight harder than what we’ve been used to was great. Having a double overtime game is something we hadn’t had either, so there were great learning outcomes for us heading into finals,” said Goriss. The match against Bendigo was significant in other ways for UC Capitals star, Kelly Wilson, who received her WNBL life membership. Wilson has made her mark in the 2018/19 WNBL season, climbing up to sixth on the all-time games played list and third for all-time assists. Third and fourth place was also determined after a thrilling match between the Perth Lynx and Adelaide Lightning. As the Lynx fell one point short of a win after going to overtime, they have fallen to fourth on the ladder and will therefore be the UC Capitals’ opponent for the semi-finals.
