GENERAL ELECTIONS IN GREECE 6th May 2012 European Elections monitor Great Uncertainty just one Month before the next Greek General Elections Corinne Deloy (with Stellina Galitopoulou) On 31st October last Prime Minister George Papandreou (Panhellenic Socialist Movement, PASOK) announced the organisation of a referendum on the rescue plan for Greece approved by the Euro- Analysis pean Union on 27th October in Brussels. The latter aimed to help Greece pay off its debts but obliged 1 month before the country to submit to economic supervision and to implement a stricter austerity regime. The the poll announcement was the source of stupor and indignation in Greece and across all of Europe – it sent the European, American and Asian stock exchanges into disarray and surprised the financial markets. “It’s suicide”, declared Michalis Matsourakis, chief economist at the Greek Alpha Bank, who perceived an attempt on the part of George Papandreou to break out of his solitude and the political crisis that was undermining the country as he pushed the opposition parties, which until now had categorically refused to support the strict austerity measures taken by the government, to adopt a position on the European plan, in order to calm the social protest movement that went together with a sharp decline in living standards. The Prime Minister, who was finding it increasingly difficult to find support within his own socialist party and the ministers of his government, had already suggested to the opposition that they create an alliance in the shape of a government coalition in June 2011. The right however, rejected this proposal.

chapter 8 A Child among the Ruins: Some Thoughts on Contemporary Modern Greek Literature for Children Przemysław Kordos I admit that the title of this chapter may be misleading at first glance. Greece is by no means a country of ruins, or a ruined country, and ancient archaeologi- cal sites (“ruins”) are relatively scarce. In fact, in some regions of this beautiful country, such as Thrace or Thessaly, one can hardly find such attractions. On the other hand, the two main cities, Athens and Thessaloniki, which house probably up to 40% of the country’s population, are built around vast and well-exposed ancient sites. The Athenian Acropolis is the city’s most impor- tant landmark, helping substantially in navigating the chaotic city centre. In Thessaloniki the excavations mingle seamlessly with housing districts, shop- ping areas, and recreational parks, and are located near busy streets. So a Greek child has an excellent chance of living close to some ruins. The other, even more universal means of encountering Greek ruins is the standard school curriculum, which revolves around ancient history, tradi- tion, and literature. Textbooks abound in pictures and drawings that proudly present their ancient heritage to Greek children. The role of the educational system is very important in shaping the attitudes of future citizens. I will come back to this issue later on, but first I will start with a personal note. Although this chapter analyses several books for children written by Greek authors in the past few decades, it is by no means reduced solely to literary criticism. I propose a daring approach both in regard to classical reception and children’s literature studies—one that results from my primary formation, which is ethnography and my practice in this field, which comprises research- ing the Modern Greeks for fifteen years now.

  • Challenging Greek History-By-Slogans
Challenging Greek History-By-Slogans By Victor Bivell Thank you Dushan and the Australian Macedonian Literary Association. I'm very happy to launch these two short and very interesting books - The Little Book of Big Greek Lies by Risto Stefov in Canada, and Ancient Greek and Other Ancient Testimonies About the Unique Ethnic Distinctness of the Ancient Macedonians by Aleksandar Donski in Macedonia. Let me start with the obvious - that Greek Government lies are very topical at present. They are on the front pages of the newspapers and often the lead stories on the nightly TV news. They've been there for a couple of years, and that is where they are likely to stay for a few more years while the Eurozone debt crisis gets sorted, and the Greek economy continues in recession. We've all seen the TV news with the dramatic demonstrations and riots in Athens and outside the Greek parliament.
