The unit has seven beds for young chronic disabled and four beds for patients with terminal illness requiring palliative care This valuable facility offers eleven units of residential accommodation to elderly ambulant persons who have minimal medical and social needs and who live independently with the assurance of support from the Assessment Unit. It also provides a 'step down' facility for patients from the Assessment Unit which enhances the confidence of the elderly person in relation to day to day independent living prior to returning to their own homes. DAY CARE UNIT Day Care Services are paramount to the objective of maintaining the older person in their home environment for as long as possible whilst also offering social opportunities and support services from the hospital. In this regard the hospital worksvery closely with our Board's Community Care Services. The concentration is on the skills the person has and how these can be developed. Home visits are conducted to assess and prepare for successful discharge of the older person. This may necessitate recommending the adaption of the home environment to suit the client's needs. Radiology sessions are held in the hospital each week, providing diagnostic x-ray services for in- patients, day patients and out-patients. Consultant cover is provided by the Consultant Radiologists at Naas General Hospital. Eight nursing and attendant staff attended training sessions and a workshop prior to the implementation of the Sonas programme. Currently eight patients are participating in the programme which is co-ordinated by Sr. Mary Hughes. Response from staff and patients to this initial programme is very positive. The Sonas programme will be extended to other groups of patients in the future.
