Applications for admission to the Unit are considered by a multi-disciplinary assessment team who meet regularly. The team consists of a Consultant Physician in Medicine for the elderly, Medical Officer, Community Medical Officer for services for the elderly, Superintendent Public Health Nurse, Senior Physiotherapist, Liaison Public Health Nurse, Assessment Unit Nurse Manager, Hospital Manager and Director of Nursing. A total of six beds is available for short stay/ respite care to allow relatives a break for social reasons 1 holidays or to offer regular intermittent care to those who can as a result lead a fuller and more satisfactory life at home. This service has proven to be of tremendous benefit to patients and carers alike. EXTENDED CARE UNIT The Extended Care Unit has 173 beds and provides long term care for elderly male and female patients who can no longer be maintained at home. The unit has seven beds for young chronic disabled and four beds for patients with terminal illness requiring palliative care This valuable facility offers eleven units of residential accommodation to elderly ambulant persons who have minimal medical and social needs and who live independently with the assurance of support from the Assessment Unit. It also provides a 'step down' facility for patients from the Assessment Unit which enhances the confidence of the elderly person in relation to day to day independent living prior to returning to their own homes. DAY CARE UNIT Day Care Services are paramount to the objective of maintaining the older person in their home environment for as long as possible whilst also offering social opportunities and support services from the hospital. In this regard the hospital worksvery closely with our Board's Community Care Services. The range of services provided for day care attenders include Nursing Care, Medical Care, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Chiropody and X-Ray. Additional personal services such as bathing, hair dressing and personal laundry are also provided. A programme of arts, crafts and entertainment including bingo, gardening and parties are planned and delivered by the staff attached to Day Care Unit. The total number of people currently on the register is sixty five with an average of thirty attending each day. Transport is provided to and from Day Care Services within the catchment area which currently includes Moone, Ballytore, Narraghmore, Blackhall, Calverstown, Castledermot, Cloney, Castlemitchel and Ballyadams. Attendance at the Unit is scheduled in response to referrals from Public Health Nurses and General Practitioners. Day Care Attendances 5,918 2,953 PJlcAULEY COURT This facility consists of a modern purpose built development of ten units of Sheltered Housing and a Common Room. The objective of this service is the provision of residential accommodation for elderly ambulant persons, who can live independently and carry out daily activities but who need to reside in a sheltered environment. PHYSIOTtlERAPY DEPARTMENT The physiotherapy department is under the direction of the Department of Physical Medicine at Naas General Hospital. Physiotherapy services are available to all areas within St. Vincent's Hospital, five sessions per week to the Assessment Unit, eight sessions per week to the Extended Care Unit and five sessions'per week to the Out-Patients Department. / The aims of the physiotherapy treatment are the rehabilitation and return to the maximum independence possible of people referred to the service. Where necessary, a maintenance service is provided in addition to treatment of acute conditions in order to maintain the person in their own home for as long as possible. In-patients Out-patients Treatments OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICE This is a joint appointment between Naas General Hospital, Baltinglass District Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital, Athy. The aim of the Occupational Therapist is to achieve the maximum level of independence in all the functional activities of daily living. The concentration is on the skills the person has and how these can be developed. Home visits are conducted to assess and prepare for successful discharge of the older person. This may necessitate recommending the adaption of the home environment to suit the client's needs. Radiology sessions are held in the hospital each week, providing diagnostic x-ray services for in- patients, day patients and out-patients. Consultant cover is provided by the Consultant Radiologists at Naas General Hospital. CHIROPODY A chiropody service is valuable in the rehabilitation process and in maintaining the potential for mobility of older people. Two chiropody sessions are held in the hospital each week provided by the Eastern Health Board. ENTAL SERVlCES Dental services are available to all our patients at our Boards local health centre. OUT-PATIENT DEPARTMENT SERVICES Ante natal clinics are held once a week. Service is provided by Portlaoise General Hospital. Attendance's at clinics for the 12 months to the 31st December, 1998 were 394 and for the period of January - June 1999 were 207. An Eye Clinic is held once a month A hot mid-day meal delivered to the homes of elderly people provides a valued contribution to nutritional well being as well as providing important personal contact. Total Meals Provided Meals are prepared in the hospital and delivered to elderly persons who for social or medical reasons are unable to provide a meal for themselves. Persons in need of this service are identified to the hospital by the Community Care Service. NUTRITIONAL ADVICE St. Vincent's Hospital avails of the service of our Boards Nutritional Advisor. The Nutritional Advisor visits the hospital once a month and advises on the dietary needs of older persons. SONAS A P C PROGRAMME I St. Vincent's Hospital began participating in the Sonas a P c programme in June 1999. This multi- sensory programme uses music, singing, touch smell and taste to promote interaction and to provide relaxation and enjoyment for older persons who have difficulty with communication. Eight nursing and attendant staff attended training sessions and a workshop prior to the implementation of the Sonas programme. Currently eight patients are participating in the programme which is co-ordinated by Sr. Mary Hughes. Response from staff and patients to this initial programme is very positive. The Sonas programme will be extended to other groups of patients in the future. Groups and individuals from neighbouring towns in our catchment area visit patients on a regular basis and provide entertainment and a social contact. An invaluable support are the many local groups who have fundraised for the benefit of the patients. Their continuing committment and support is greatly appreciated. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT A planned maintenance programme is in place at St. Vincent's Hospital. In the past year the following work has been carried out, . Relocation and refurbishment of the laundry Replacement of eighteen windows. Phase three of the new heating and hot water system . Re-wiring of two six bedded units on each ward to meet current health and safety legislation . Installation of wash hand basins in two wards to meet infection control standards. Relocation and refurbishment of stores area. OTHER WORK CURRE TLY IN PROWESS: . The development of a new staff restaurant, by upgrading and refurbishment of the old Laundry. 0 Development of Librarylcomputer Room, by upgrading and refurbishment of the old stores department. Installation of wash hand basins in all wards. WORK SCHEDULED FOR REMAINDER OF YEAR INCLUDES: - Re painting of two wards . Refurbishment of all ward kitchens . Resurfacing of the drivinglparking area to the front of the hospital.
