Whether we speak about the flourishing of architecture and the decorative arts here in the second half of the eighteenth century, the emergence of the city in the early nineteenth century as one of the great centers for the education of artists, or the achievement of towering figures such as Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Eakins, or Frank Furness, no one can dispute the fact that Philadelphia has always held an important place in the development of American art. Philadelphia’s many cultural institutions have played a significant role in this story, providing a record of its remarkable artistic achievements and enriching the lives of its citizens. Of these, none is perhaps as emblematic of the city’s remarkable artistic heritage and civic aspirations as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Indeed, institutions like this are intended to reflect and celebrate the creative spirit and values of the communities they serve. In this regard, we can say—and do so with confidence—that there are few cities as committed to the arts as Philadelphia. The arts matter here. This is not simply a matter of civic pride; it is also, more fundamentally, about civic identity, about how Philadelphia defines itself and wants to be seen in the world.
