Some areas of the parish have them but the higher moorland areas probably don’t. The British Trust for Orni- thology [BTO] are organizing a nationwide survey to discover the state of the tawny owl population – are they declining, holding their own or increasing? Phase 2 of Project Owl started on 30th Sept, the Tawny Owl Calling Survey. This involves a 20 minute survey from your garden or any other public area or space such as local Churchyard for example. This survey provides one of the best oppor- tunities for many years to build a picture of Tawny Owl in our county. The survey is however, not only interested in where Owls are, we want to know where they aren't so even if you have never heard owls from your garden or local area this is no excuse not to join up. The survey is looking for ‘zeroheroes’ just as much as positive records. The survey runs until March 30th, it's 20 minutes, once a week. You do not need to count every week but the more counts you do the better quality the Citizen Science is. The link to the Calling Survey page is below where you will find a PDF containing full survey instructions and at the bottom of the page there is an audio containing the sounds of male and female Tawny Owl. This is one survey you can do without being an expert at bird identification and you don’t have to be a BTO member. Tawny Owl Calling Survey | BTO - British Trust for Ornithology All you have to do is stand in your garden for 20 minutes after dusk, you may be surprised by what you hear and even see. Once the survey results are compiled, after March, I will let you know the results. LMS. Di NOTES FROM THE VICARAGE Early monastic communities looked to be led into the desert. For some that literally meant desert; to others it became isolated places often open to the elements and the hand of God. There is bustle in the air right now. You can hear the wind again releasing autumn leaves from their summer landscape. You can hear the crunch of early morning frosts and thin ice. You can also hear the sound of fireworks and the yet faint stray notes of an early Christmas carol. As we inevitably become caught up in preparations, look to be led into the desert - to the quieter places around you and the quiet corners of your life and mind. And, may the Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and give you peace. Philip PARISH UNITED CAROL SERVICE TUESDAY 11TH DECEMBER 7.00pm ST BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH, WARLEGGAN All welcome Followed by mince pies / tea / coffee We would like to send our thanks to all those we have currently met in Mount and Warleggan, everyone has been very friendly and welcoming. Kind Regards, Ross and Ceri (1 Lower Thorne, Warleggan) CLIMATE VISION ST.NEOT CHURCH 11.00am - SUNDAY NOVEMBER 18th A few handy facts :- There are 560 million cars in the World currently running on fossil fuel. If everyone in the world lived like the average European we would need 3 plan- ets to live on. If everyone lived like the average American we would need 5 plan- ets Human activity puts 100 times as much CO2 into the atmosphere per annum than volcanic activity. The climate is always changing but it has never changed with this speed and intensity in any interglacial period ever in geological history (10 times the rate in fact). David Attenborough and 97% of scientists believe that climate change is driven by human activity and that we have just 12 years to avoid it spiralling beyond our control. Donald Trump doesn’t believe in Climate change. Luci Isaacson will be at Morning Service at St Neot Church on November 18th. Luci is running the Climate Vision project on behalf of Truro Diocese and will tell us why we have this problem, what is causing it and most importantly what we can and must do about it. But this is not an exercise in wailing and gnashing of teeth, this is a message of HOPE. Please come along and participate in this important service. Please note that THERE WILL BE NO SERVICE AT WARLEGGAN CHURCH ON THAT DAY LAND TO THE SOUTH OF NOEL'S MEADOW You may recall that in August 2017 a planning application for the construction of 5 dwellings and 1 flat over a shop was refused. The applicant appealed against this refusal and following an inspection and consideration of representations (including those from Warleggan Parish Meeting) the Planning Inspector issued a decision on 26 October. The appeal was dismissed with the following conclusion by the In- spector. "I have found that the residential development of the site would comply with the settlement policies of the Local Plan and the Framework, and would not harm the character and appearance of the area. However, it has not been adequately demonstrated that an affordable housing contribution cannot be provided and as such the proposal conflicts with LP Policy 8 and the Development Plan considered as a whole. There are no material considerations that outweigh this conflict." The full decision may be found on the Cornwall Council planning web-site under reference PA17/05972. MOUNT CHAPEL TH PEL SATURDAY 8 DECEMBER CHRISTMAS BAZAAR JUBILEE HALL 10.00am to 12.00 NOON. TEA / COFFEE / RAFFLE / PASTIES / VARIOUS STALLS SUNDAY 23RD DECEMBER CHRISTINGLE SERVICE 4.00pm ALL WELCOME JOIN A NEW GROUP? I am planning on starting up new groups based in St Neot and would like to see if there is anyone who would be interested in any of them. Send me a message if you would like to get involved! I would love to hear from you. Heather Taylor [email protected] 07484 273981 A Music Group—Some of my music students are keen to start a music appre- ciation group, and this is already gaining momentum. Think of it as a book club, but listening and discussing music instead! A Poetry Group—Poetry writing is gaining popularity and I know that the Lisk- eard Poets have a waiting list. I wondered if anyone would like to form a group closer to home. The idea would be to look at the work of other poets and try our hand at writing our own poetry. A Murder Mystery Group—I adore detective fiction and write quite a bit of it. I think it would be a great idea to form a group of like-minded people and dis- cuss actual cases, solved or unsolved, put our own cases forward as to wheth- er or not the verdict was correct, and maybe see how true crime affects fiction. All groups would take place in my studio in St Neot, probably on a monthly basis, days and times to be arranged. WINTER WELLBEING www.cornwall.gov.uk/winterwellbeing As we turn to face Winter if you are you in poor health or at risk of ill-health, or with underlying health issues then Cornwall Council's Winter Wellbeing programme may be able to help.

  • Sunday 1St August – Landsend to Fowey
Day 1 Land’s End to Fowey 64 miles Garmin file: http://connect.garmin.com/course/2826499 Elevation Gain: 1409m / 4622ft Overview This is a tough start to the trip with plenty of short, sharp hills to tackle. The road from Lands’ End to Penzance is undulating with a couple of short, steep hills. After Marazion there is a fairly gradual climb away from the village then more undulating quiet roads to Leedstown. The route continues to be hilly for most of the rest of the day with notable hills away from the King Harry ferry, Tregony & towards the end of the day at Polperro, just after Par. You will cycle along mostly quiet country lanes with the busiest section at St. Austell and Par. There is a climb and descent at the end of the day into Fowey. Practical Notes There are lots of short, steep hills today. There is a short chain ferry at 39 miles. You will need a £1 coin and remember to get into a low gear as there is a steep hill on the other side. It’s safer to walk on and off these ferries The scenic and historic port town of Charlestown is just off-route at mile 57.3 Fowey is a lovely place to spend the night, but the group are spread out across a number of B&B’s. Map Elevation Profile Start point St Just Market Place Breakfasts have been arranged for 7.30am at all accommodation and we’ll aim to meet at Lands’ End for 8.45am.
