GPS Rugby Brief History

GPS Rugby is the successor in name to GPS Old Boys Rugby Club and to to the Past Grammar School Football Club and it is the oldest surviving Rugby Club in Queensland and also one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in Australia. The Club was officially formed in 1887 and consisted of a combination of both past and present Brisbane Grammar School players although a number of them represented Queensland as Past Grammar players in 1885 and 1886.

In 1889 the Past Grammar School Football Club was established as a separate identity distinct from the old side with its mix of past and present players. The formation of the Club was formalised at a meeting held at the Treasury Hotel in Brisbane on the 5th March 1891 and Mr. R.H. Roe, the Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School was elected as President. Sir Charles Lilley and Sir Samuel Griffith, among others, were elected as Vice Presidents. It was decided that the Club colours would be red and white. Rugby was not played in Queensland from 1916 until reintroduced in 1928 at which time, under a new name, the BGS Old Boys’ Football Club again took its place in the Brisbane competition.

In 1930 the constitution of the Club was changed to allow past students from the other GPS schools to become members and although the name was retained that year it was later changed to GPS Old Boys’ Rugby Club and it played under that name in green and blue colours for the first time in the 1931 season. The constitution was again changed some years later and membership of the club was unrestricted.

Fifty of the Club’s members have played for Australia and over 200 have played for Queensland. Seven have captained Australian senior teams, two the Australian sevens team and one has represented and captained England and another Scotland.

Ashgrove GPS Junior Rugby Club was formed from the Ashgrove Emus Club in 1984 when it affiliated with GPS Old Boys after that club moved from Finsbury Park to Ashgrove Sports Ground. It quickly grew to be the largest Junior Club in Brisbane winning the QJRU President’s trophy for the most successful club on a number of occasions.

In 2014 GPS Old Boys Rugby Club amalgamated with Ashgrove GPS Junior Rugby Club to form GPS Rugby Club making it the largest club in Australia with almost 1500 players.

7 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2015

President’s Report

It is with pleasure that I present my report for the 2015 Season. In 2012 I believed that I had delivered my final report but the early retirement for business reasons of Peter McWhirter saw me return to the Chair. The GPS Rugby Club of 2015 is a vastly different organisation to the one that existed three years ago. Three full time employees and playing numbers which exceed the size of most schools in Queensland and many more volunteers working towards the common goal of providing an appropriate and safe environment for the Clubs young boys, girls, men and women to play their Rugby.

The Club is fortunate to have the services of so many volunteers and members who provide both physical and financial resources to it for without them GPS could not function at the level it does. The Club is also grateful, for the support of its many and valuable sponsors, the Queensland State Government and the Brisbane City Council whose generous financial contributions allows the Club to continually make improvements at Yoku Road. They are the best Club Rugby grounds in Queensland. The job of running amateur Clubs is becoming increasingly more difficult in Rugby as more and more demands are placed on them by their governing bodies. The ARU and the QRU are no exception and the lack of consultation and cooperation and the financial imposts imposed by them this year has impacted on the numbers who choose Rugby as their sport. With no direct funding available from either there is a great risk that the game will become unaffordable to many and that there will be a drift to other codes if proper consideration is not given to what we all know as grass roots Rugby.

Whilst the merged operation of Junior and Senior Clubs works well your Board recognises that there are improvements that can be made and it will continue to work with the Junior Sub Committee to ensure that they are. The underage results this year across the age groups have been excellent. Whilst numbers are down, the ten eligible teams (100%) made the Finals and three, U 13 Maroon, U 14 Green and U 15 Green won Premierships and the U 13 Green, U14 Blue and U 16 Green played in the Grand Finals emerging as Runners Up.

The Open teams did not fare as well this year. For the first time in many years none of the senior teams made the Grand Finals or won Premierships. Whilst the competition ladders do not demonstrate it there were some excellent performances across all grades during the season but the performances were inconsistent and varied from team to team and from week to week. Injury and wholesale retirement were contributing factors but not all of them and there is much work to be done to ensure better results in 2016. Work has commenced already in preparation for next year. The teams were placed, Premier Colts – 2nd, 3rd Grade – 3rd, 4th Grade – 3rd, Premier Grade – 7th, Premier Reserves – 6th, 1st Grade – 7th, 2nd Grade – 6th, Colts 1 – 6th, Colts 2 – 5th. In the Doughty Shield for Club Champions GPS placed 5th. The Club remains numerically and financially strong and there is a lot of quality in the playing group which is evidenced by the Clubs selections in representative teams. Unfortunately the way the game is now structured with little interest in Club football from above the services of representative players is all but lost.

On behalf of the Club I would like to congratulate all Jeeps players who were selected in representative teams in 2015. They are listed on page 7 of this report.

Finally my thanks go to the members of the Board this year, to Anthony Herbert, Matt Turner and Marty Southwood , Rob Melloy to Lorraine Gorman and her band of helpers, Marty Silec and his Dawnbusters, to all Coaches Managers, Runners and Trainers, to our Medical Team for their contributions. Your help and assistance has been invaluable. Without you GPS Rugby Club could not be what it is today.

Please support the Club sponsors so they will continue to support us. Find them on our web site. I look forward to seeing you all back in 2016.

Thank you.

Strength and Conditioning

Previously GPS Rugby Club has funded a Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Premier Grade, with very little in terms of supplying expertise in the Colts and Grades teams. This support (outside of ‘Prems’) fluctuated over the years but with little enthusiasm, little direction and not much benefit. On a similar note, very few Jeeps members were using the Jeeps fitness & strength equipment. Now, with a connection with QUT we have S&C Coaches for 9 of the 10 teams – implying each player has a receives a similar level of support, regardless of the level they play.

The 2015 season got off to a rocky start with Premier grade S&C Coach leaving to pursue other interests. Pat Campbell (2014 Premier Colts S&C Coach) was promoted from the Colts program 3 weeks before the season started.

Further, the following appointments were made: • Premier Reserve Grade – James Borger • 1st Grade – Jody Spicer • 2nd Grade – Jake McManus • 3rd Grade – Kevin McMahon • 4th Grade – Rebecca Brown • Women’s Team – Harrison Westbrook • Premier Colts – Rhonan Bland • Colts 1 – Cain Yoshuira

Just as we’d like to pride ourselves in developing players, we should pride ourselves in developing coaches.

From the above list we have supplied S&C coaches to the QAS, Nudgee College (x2), Disabilities Queensland, a private cricket academy.

Initiatives The S&C team has attended a strapping course and can offer strapping to players pre-training or can help out pre- match (players must bring their own tape). These trainers were used to fulfill our safety commitments to the junior players. We are changing the culture from ‘I am injured and can’t train’ to ‘I am injured and still able to keep fit’ by recruiting the sick, lame and lazy and working them (hard) in the gym.The S&C team is in contact with the physiotherapists and takes players through their prescribed rehab programs.

Gym Facility Special thanks to the Board and Staff for their support in helping transition from a primarily commercial facility to a purpose designed athlete-focused facility. The Gym was painted and given a proverbial face-lift. There is also a cleaning roster. We spent $16K in equipment but now the Club is independent and not reliant on external people. The philosophy behind each piece of equipment is that it is multi-functional – especially important in a small facility.

Gratitude Feedback from the coaches, players and from QUT is that they are impressed and that the program is working well. Special thanks to Matt Turner, Anthony Herbert and the Board for their unwavering support, both of the program and the desire to develop the S&C team.

Premier Grade

Coaches: Todd Dammers, Damon Emtage, Luke Oxford, John Richards (M) Patrick Campbell (S&C)

The 2015 season was always going to be tough to maintain the huge success of the 2013 & 2014 seasons, with a the nucleus of the group graduating to or retiring the GPS Premier Grade season resembled that of a yo-yo.

The new batch of players that were forced to mature before their time, will put the club in great shape for years to come. As a club we should continue to strive to set the standard of entertaining rugby and in so doing, give players a great place to show case their skills to move into Super rugby franchises. We saw glimpses of what this group has the ability to do this season.

There was and still is great disappointment of not being part of the finals series in 2015 this cannot be denied and essentially that is the mark of success, but in many ways I feel that this season was just as successful for different reasons. ‐ A tremendous win against UQ at home… Some stunning rugby was played by our next generation of players ‐ The first half onslaught against Sunnybank in the 2nd Round.. 30 – 0. Our boys put on a master class of running rugby against a strong Sunnybank squad. ‐ Michael Richards break out season, NRC selection & 2015 GPS Premier Grade Players Player ‐ The amount of exposure that our injury situation provided for players throughout the club ‐ The debutants, of which there were some 20+. While not ideal, these players have now had a taste of what Premier Grade Rugby is about and will serve the club well in the coming seasons. ‐ The tenacity and resolve that our Premier Group showed in what can only be described as a trying year… This shows as a club our players are fine people and made of the “right stuff”

The boys to their credit really turned up and toughed it out this season, led by skipper Daniel Gorman, the team never shied away from their responsibilities both on and off the field. As a group we would be the first ones to say that we didn’t seize the key moments in some matches, this group has within it, a fight and determination that is not often seen on the scoreboard. This team will be ready to fire come 2016 and the disappointment of the up and down nature of 2015 will serve as a constant reminder of what is required.

The medical staff and medical tent was as busy as I have ever seen in rugby, at stages we had more soldiers in the tent then we did on the field. Clarkie and his team put in so many hours getting players assessed, treated and reconditioned, without their expertise and passion for the boys, it would have been a much harder season.

Our unsung off field hero’s, JR, Benny and the host of water runners maintained the great service we have come to expect from GPS volunteers. Game day just seem to flow without a hiccup, giving the players and coaches nothing to worry about but the game or training.

Patty Campbell, though Patty joined us in an unconventional way, he worked closely with the players, looking after their welfare. He was a dedicated and very much valued member of our off field team.

It would be remiss of me not to mention Yoshi, he ensured all players every physical request was met, whether that be with a pregame massage or as a stretching partner for any of our players, Yosh worked closely with the players, looking after their welfare. We are looking forward to seeing Yoshi down at Yoku Rd again in 2016.

The wonderful supporters continue to be the best in the Brisbane Premier Grade Competition and very much appreciated by the players. We look forward to returning to the winners list in 2016 and reward you for your loyalty. Thank you all for a most enjoyable season.

Finally, to Anthony Herbert and Matt Turner. The club is a better place for having such dedicated servants like you both driving it’s off field matters. There is no doubt that the GPS off field team is the strongest in the competition and it is up to us on the field to follow your lead. Thank you both for your unwavering support of the rugby program and what we are trying to achieve.

1996 was one of the most famous years in GPS Rugby history, as a group we will have one eye on the past while trying to create our own history some 20 years later. Roll on 2016!!

Premier Reserve Grade

Coaches: Matt Turner, Ben Gissing, Mick Clutterbuck (M) James Borger (S&C)

The 2015 season was certainly a challenging one for the GPS Premier Reserve Grade team, with the retirement and unavailability of many of the grades stalwarts at the end of 2014, a change to the coaching and support staff from previous seasons and a difficult competition draw. With this in mind, the young team performed admirably and should be very proud of its efforts.

The season started with changes to the coaching staff with the team of Matthew Turner, Ben Gissing, James Borger and Mick Clutterbuck locked in from Round 3. With an early loss to Easts and a rain-effected draw with UQ, the team got going with a last minute victory over Souths in Round 3.

Consecutive victories over Wests and eventual minor premiers in Brothers had the sitting just outside the top 4 at the end of Round 6. Unfortunately, back-to-back losses to Sunnybank and Bond University followed by a win over Norths had the team sitting 6th at the half-way point of the season.

With 3 of the next 4 games at home, it was important that we made the most of playing at Yoku Road over the next month. Victories at home over Easts, Wests and Souths sandwiched a loss to UQ, had the team sitting 5th with four games to go. Unfortunately, the lack of key bonus points was starting to effect the team’s position on the ladder toward the back end of the year. However, if we won 3 of the final 4 matches against Sunnybank, Brothers, Bond University and Norths – we would have qualified for the Finals Series. Regrettably, we were beaten in three of these matches, thus finishing 6th and outside the top 4.

While the team won more matches than we lost this season, the loss of key matches against fellow finals series contenders, and a lack of bonus points ultimately cost the team an opportunity to defend its premiership from 2014. With so many changes to personal (both on and off the field), 2015 provided the club with a fantastic opportunity to ‘blood’ many younger players within the club’s ranks, and give them a much deserved opportunity to play Premier Rugby. While a lack of consistency was ultimately our Achilles Heel, the players showed that they are very much up to the rigours and demands of this standard of rugby and proved it with key victories over quality opposition. I’m confident that with the experience gained from 2015, both as individuals and as a club, we will be better for the experience.

Personally, I find one of the joys of coaching is the development and improvement of players within an environment that challenges them both mentally and physically. We certainly had this with a young and inexperienced Premier Reserve Grade Team in 2015. However, with an enthusiastic attitude, a solid worth ethic and good people involved (both on and off the field), more success for this team is just around the corner. Thank you to all players for your efforts and support in 2015.

In closing, I would like to acknowledge the support I received from Ben Gissing, James Borger, Mick Clutterbuck, Nigel Hogan, Luke Oxford and Tony Mee within Premier Reserve Grade throughout the year. In addition, both Todd Dammers and Damon Emtage (Premier Grade) and Kim Jones and Stu Hendricks (1st Grade) provided valuable support to our rugby program in 2015 – thank you all from Premier Reserve Grade.

GPS Rugby Club is a club with a rich history, built on the back of hard working, loyal volunteers. To everyone that assisted this year, from the canteen staff and home game set-up crew, to the water runners and medical staff – thank you for your time and efforts in fostering the environment that is GPS Rugby Club. Enjoy your time-off and we look forward to seeing you back in 2016.

Brisbane First Grade

Coaches: Stu Hendricks, Kim Jones, Allan Berriman(M) Jody Spicer (S&C)

2015 was a disappointing and disrupted year for the First Grade team. We got off to a poor start in our first game and found it difficult to build momentum with injuries and player promotions until Sunnybank at Sunnybank when against all odds a superb display after a slow start saw us take the points. A couple of good wins against Logan and Norths saw the end of the first round with us sitting on the lower end of the table but with a great chance of making finals with some good results. There were a number of really close results in the first round which unfortunately saw the bounce of the ball often go against us in the final minutes.

Round two saw a solid start with a home win against Easts but again the curse of injuries and player promotions caused a drop off in the momentum with close losses over the next couple of rounds.

The highlight of the round was the determined effort of 25 players who turned up to play Logan and cover both Second and First grade. The seconds came away with a gutsy win on the bell but the game weary players were not able to match a quality Logan first grade team. This was the epitome of club spirit and at the end of the day not one of these players had a gram more to give. Congratulations to those guys.

Thanks to coaches Stu Hendricks and Kim Jones and our new acquisition this year S&C coach Jodie Spicer who kept the boys on their toes.

Thanks also to Anthony Herbert, Matt Turner and the committee for their ongoing support of the club through a tough year.

I look forward to season 2016.

Brisbane Second Grade

Coaches: James Thomson, Tim Sheppard, Ryan Webster(M), Cris Gillespie (AM), Jake McManus (S&C) )

2015 represented a year of change and development, not only as a team but also as a club overall. Gone were many of the older heads that had been relied upon for many years to get the job done, replaced by talented youth still finding their way within the club.

The season gone provided many highs and lows, and at times felt like a rollercoaster of emotions. Fantastic wins with many tries flowing, and agonizing defeats on the final whistle were commonplace. But through it all we as a coaching team and a playing group committed ourselves to the development of what we can control, the way we play the game. Through that we were able to take a solid group of talented youths and turn them into a team of winners who discovered just what it takes to be determined enough to win. This was demonstrated through our final 3 games, where we managed to over come a half time deficit in each one by scoring 35-0 in the second half against a rampant Sunnybank team. Followed by an after the bell victory over Logan, and finally almost snatching a draw against a powerhouse North’s team (whom we had not beaten in 2 years) only to come up short with a draw.

Whilst many players can hold their heads up high with how they applied themselves this year to developing their respective games, I would like to highlight a few who did themselves proud in the service of the 2nd Grade. Lachlan Hastings, Joe Selwood, Matthew Muller, James Broadly, Brendan Trudgen, Chris Jenkins, Gerry Streek all of these GPS men demonstrated what it takes to win games and do it in the manner befitting of the GPS way. Never losing their heads and always no matter what trying anything with intensity to achieve that win irrespective of the odds against them.

I would also like to thank the amazing contributions of our fellow lower grade management team, Corey Trudgen, Alex Grace, John Lambourne, Cris Gillespie and Matthew Blinkoff. Without your buy in and contribution to the training program and environment we created none of the success we did have this season would have been possible.

Finally I would like to thank Tim, Ryan, and Jake for the past two years of dedication to the 2nd Grade GPS rugby team. With Ryan hanging the clipboard up, this season represented the last time for the foreseeable future the four of us would walk the sidelines together. As such I would like to end by saying it has been an honor to work with you.

Here’s to an amazing 2016 season at GPS Rugby.

Cheers,

Buff James Thomson (Coach)

Brisbane Third Grade

Coaches: Corey Trudgen, Alex Grace, John Lambourne(M), Kevin McMahon (S&C)

Season 2015 for the GPS 3rd Grade side was one which had great promise but unfortunately ended with one of the most unfavourable decisions in recent years for the club.

During the pre-season coaches Trudgen and Grace became acquainted with each other and very quickly established they wanted to play some attractive rugby with a strong focus on building phases off the set piece and create a real sense of mateship throughout the team. The players responded to this challenge and with an injection of Spanish bravado from our international friends David and Hector, there were the makings of a real premiership contender within the side.

A season long relationship with 2nd grade and 4th grade meant that the players were being tested each week to retain their positions and also push for higher honours. It was amazing to see some of the players abilities grow throughout the year due to these sessions, I think every player who was involved with lower grades for 2015 has walked away a more rounded player and hopefully they continue to build on this going forward.

Unfortunately, due to a rather injury plagued season at the club, establishing some continuity with the starting 15 became difficult, however, the team still managed to put themselves into top 2 contention by the end of the first round which culminated in a 58-14 thrashing of Sunnybank at Sunnybank. Again, due to some unfortunate scheduling arrangements the team then had three weeks of BYE rounds before taking the field again for a competition game.

The 3rd Grade season took a few backwards steps after returning from the BYE rounds as the team found it hard to gel with an every changing roster of players. It is during this time that special thanks must go to James Thomson, Tim Sheppard, Matt Blinkhoff and Ryan Webster who did their very best to help get 3rd Grade out of the rut whilst still looking after their teams. A few losses to teams which should have been beaten meant there were some worried looks leading up the finals but thankfully the team took their rightful place at Ballymore.

3rd Grade managed to sneak into 3rd position to finish the season and with a full strength side finally on the field, proceeded to beat Wests 48-5 in the minor semi-final. However, that was as far as the team would progress and due to some confusion and rulings regarding player eligibility the team was then disqualified. It was a very sad way to end the season but all the players and coaching staff know that the club did everything possible to fix the situation but unfortunately it just wasn’t to be. I genuinely believe that had the side progressed, GPS 3rd Grade would currently be the 2015 Premiership Winners and I hope that all the player’s return in 2016 to make it right and win the competition.

Special thanks must go to Corey Trudgen who is retiring from the club due to work commitments. Although only being with the club for two seasons, Corey has contributed so much to the players and coaching staff, he is genuinely passionate about rugby and cares for the players, I think the club would have been hard pressed to find someone who fit in so well in such a short period of time. Also the involvement of his entire family had become a great addition to Saturday game days and all will be missed.

On behalf of all the 3rd Grade staff, Corey, John and Alex, thank you to the club for a great season.

Brisbane Fourth Grade

Coaches: Matt Blinkhoff, Luke Campbell, Ryan Webster(M) Bec Brown (S&C

After entering the competition in Round 3 due to a late burst of player numbers and some quality recruitment, the 2015 season looked to be a promising one for the 4th Grade Gallopers. With early victories over University1, Wests and Brothers, the Team was sitting in a comfortable 2nd place after 7 rounds.

But as is the nature of the 4th Grade competition, the draw was plagued by a large number of BYES (6 in total) which made it difficult to gain any momentum during the season. Throw in a couple of tough encounters with competition frontrunners Easts and 3rd placed University2, the team dropped down to 3rd Place at the half way point of the season.

With a slow start to the second half of the competition, which included an unexpected loss to Wests at home, the Team had season defining victory over a tough Brothers side 32-10 on a cold wintery Wednesday night at Crosby Park. This was particularly pleasing considering the club had suffered losses in all Grades against Brothers during the round, so it was nice to get one back against the Brethren. With confidence and momentum on our side, this put us in good stead for finals as we eventually finished the season in 3rd position.

We came up against University1 in the first week of finals, and after an inspiring pre-game speech in the sheds from Nick Frisby, the team got off to a good start with an early penalty from Charlie Beggs boot to lead 3-0. The experience of some of our senior players saw the piggies dominate Uni early which allowed the backs to get on the front foot. Unfortunately we gave too many penalties away which led to Uni squaring the ledger at 3-3, then eventually crossing the line to lead 8-3. As was shown throughout the season, the team continued to show plenty of patience and resilience, with Matt Adams crossing just before halftime to head into the break locked at 8-all.

University came out firing in the second half, and some uncharacteristic lapses in our defence led to a couple of quick tries. Down 20-8 deep into the second half, the teams ‘never say die’ attitude kicked in with Liam Ferguson crossing under the black dot and Andy Pope converting to bring the score back to 20-15. The team threw everything they had at Uni in the dying minutes, but fell agonisingly short.

The season had come to an unfortunate close, but I couldn’t be prouder of the playing group for the fight and determination shown throughout the year. There were 59 players who took the field for 4th Grade in 2015, and most pleasingly, 5 of those were Colts players which shows the mighty Gallopers will have significant depth heading into 2016.

To the senior players in Mark Donaldson, Liam Ferguson, Trent Benett, James Broadley, Charlie Begg and Andy Pope, thanks for all your support in leading this group around the paddock. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege.

A very special thank you goes to Luke ‘Pudge’ Campbell, who joined the coaching ranks part way through the season, and had a noticeable and immediate impact to the team. Also to Alex Grace, Corey Trudgen, James Thompson, Tim Shepperd, Bec Brown, John Lambourne and Ryan Webster for all the support you provided the team and myself during the season.

Finally to Anthony Herbert and Matt Turner for all your support throughout 2015 – the lower grades are in good shape heading into 2016!

Brisbane Women

Coach: Ana Fotu, Mote Kite, James Kite, Caroline Vakalahi, Anna Nasalo (M) Harrison Westbrook (S&C)

The emerging tag that women’s rugby finds itself anchored to inevitably means experience is a deciding ingredient towards success in the women’s competition. After losing a wealth of experience that included two Wallaroos and three players with 20 years of experience either moving on or retiring, it was always going to be a hard task forecasting exactly what to expect from the 2015 Women’s rugby squad.

The first half of the season was a steep learning curve for many of the members of the women’s team, and none came steeper than the tough first round away loss suffered at the hands of a clinical Sunnybank team. Aside from the 7-47 score line that arguably flattered the GPS team, the loss was even tougher to swallow with injuries also claiming some key personnel. The loss displayed just how much ground the team needed to make up, to be considered a legitimate contender in the competition. A so the work began.

A testament to resolve and desire to improve within the squad, the women’s team were able to dust themselves off after the loss and go within a game of a semi-finals birth, an achievement can be proud of and look to build on in the years ahead. GPS were able to put up some memorable performances during the year, including the complete team victory in round one against Colleges which saw the GPS women rack up a comprehensive 39 – 0 shutout, as well as a brave and gritty 12 -7 first round away win against a fast finishing Wests outfit littered with 7’s and 15’s State representatives, displaying the true potential within the team.

The most memorable of GPS’s performances ironically came about via a defeat from the team responsible for providing the team with its most toughest loss of the year. Squaring up against the formidable Sunnybank team again, the GPS women went toe to toe with their more fancied rivals in every facet of the game, a far cry from the first time the two teams met . The 7-24 score line flattered the Dragons on that day but the substantial growth across the team and seen in players like Emma Brien, Kimberley Hunt and Alapeta Ngauamo was particularly evident against the best team in the competition.

The improvements in technical nous, set piece play and general skill sets displayed against the Dragons that day, proved that with time, the GPS women’s team will be a team to be reckoned with in the future if the strong core of players currently in the squad remain moving into the future.

The exemplary play and leadership qualities of inspirational captain Marlugu Dixon, utility Emma Brien, outside back Kimberley Hunt and forwards Leana Dyer, Vuanimasei Rasolea, Likah Olive and Vira Kite were constant shining lights for the developing GPS team throughout the year, while the continued development of promising players Alapeta Ngauamo, Sepiuta Ngauamo, and Tamika Kefu will ensure the long term plan to make the GPS club a premier destination for talented female rugby players will undoubtedly come to fruition in the very near future.

Congratulations to Marlugu Dixon, Leana Dyer, Kimberley Hunt Apikali Loganimoce and Vuanimasei Rasolea on being named in the Queensland Women’s XV wider training squad, where all ladies got their first taste of the representative environment this year. Unfortunatlely due to injury or work commitments, only Hunt and Dyer were able to go onto the Nationals but there are positive signs for the future with such a large contingent recognised for higher honours.

A special mention goes to Ana Maria Willis, Katalina Kite and Sepiuta Ngauamo who all laced up the boots for their first full season of rugby ever.

And finally, a massive thanks to the dedicated staff behind the women’s team, head coach Mote Kite and trainer Harrison Roy for their efforts in preparing the ladies throughout the year, manager Anna Nasolo and her assistant Tiana Tamati for their tireless administrative efforts behind the scenes, personal team photographer Jeff Genia for his selfless efforts in making the GPS Women’s team the best covered team in the women’s competition and to GPS C.E.O Anthony Herbert for his selfless efforts in supporting the GPS women’s cause throughout the year.

To a bigger and better 2016 season we go.

Qld Premier Colts

Coaches: Brendan Kiernan, Kelevi Tuicolo, Lewis Torkington, Chris Eaves (M), Rhonan Bland (S&C)

In 2014, GPS Premier Colts won 13 games in a row to secure the minor premiership, only to lose there next 5 games and miss the Grand Final. In November 2014, about a dozen players began preseason training with the GPS colt’s academy with a focus on skills, strength and conditioning. These players then came together with the rest of the Colts group in February where a Premier Colts squad was selected. This is when the platform was laid to repeat and improve on last year with a clear goal of winning the 2015 Premiership.

With a number of 2nd year Premier Colts returning and an influx of new players from various schools and parts of Brisbane and the Sunshine coast, the 2015 season began with excitement, in what has become a very high standard and competitive Premier rugby Colts competition.

With goals set and trials done and dusted, the first 4 games of the competition were all away games starting against East’s. GPS prevailed 17 – 7 and then was off to University in a hard fought contest going down 14 – 11. GPS then won there next 3 games in a row including an impressive try to Fullback Jacob Manning on the fulltime whistle to beat Brothers. Round 6 saw GPS face last year’s Premiers Sunnybank in their 2nd loss for the season going down by 17 points. After 2 more victories against Bond University and North’s, the end of the first round was complete with GPS in fourth position.

Round robin 2 began with a close win against East’s at home then a heavy defeat to competition front Runners University. This loss was a shock to the system and some strong lessons were learnt.

A refresh was required and with some hard training, discipline and good team work, GPS won there next 6 games in a row beating South’s West’s, North’s comprehensively and close but season defining wins against Brothers by 10 points and Sunnybank and Bond University by 1.

At the completion of regular fixtures, GPS were 2nd on the ladder and into the Major semi-final against University. In this game GPS were in the contest down 14 – 10 at halftime only to slip away eventually going down 35- 13 and now faced Sunnybank in a Preliminary Final.

The Preliminary Final was a nail biter with GPS trailing most of the game, 2 late tries saw them hit the front with 6 min to play only to go down to a penalty close to fulltime losing the contest 26-25.

2015 saw some excellent performances from players which have put them well in the mix for North vs South Rep selection and the opportunity to be selected in the QLD under 20’s program.

Of course, none of the success for 2014/2015 with a record of 26 wins and 10 loses would be possible without excellent coaching performances by Brendan Kiernan, Kelevi Tuicolo, Lewis Torkington and David Sheehan.

2 Years of High standard Premier Colt’s rugby has seen the Club in a fortunate position in regards to depth with a number of quality players sure to figure in Premier Reserves and Premier Grade competitions in years to come.

Brisbane Colts One

Coaches: Nigel Hogan; Tony Rogers, Mark Sheppard (M), Cain Yosjiura (S&C)

A tough year this year for colts 1 and while the efforts and commitment showed by the team did not translate into end of year results, certainly a year that all involved can be proud of. Colts 1 is the bridge that supports the colts program and this year more than ever before this was the case. This year the decision was made to provide Premier colts with a fresh bench to give them every chance to win the competition this year. This approach did produce results with Premier Colts finishing in the top 2 at the end of the regular season. It did however come at a cost and potentially reduced the chances of Colts 1 and Colts 2 featuring in finals with the reduced player talent available for selection.

This season the Colts 1 Captain on and off the field was Sam McSweeney who did an excellent job and showed a maturity beyond his years. Sam was well supported by Olly Darwin, Matt Toye and Jack Treston who all stepped into the role over the year while Sam was on Premier Colt’s duties. The season commenced with Nigel Hogan and Tony Rogers at the coaching helm and when Nigel stepped down just prior to the end of the first round our Manager Mark Sheppard stepped in to take over coaching the forwards. The team was also supported by Jeff Kerr and Fano Ahovelo who came in mid-season to help bring the team home in the second round.

One of the main highlights of the year was the outstanding wins against South’s and Wests. The boys were on fire and put on scores that were unrivalled in the competition with wins over South’s by 90 to 0 and 66 to 0 and a first round win over Wests by 77 to 0, before Wests forfeited in the final round. The level of ball movement in these games was a sight to see with some tries going through over 15 sets of hands to score. Even more pleasing was the level of defensive commitment to hold these sides to nil and not drop their concentration for even a second.

The level of Colts 1 rugby was extremely high this year with some very good sides running around. While we fell short a few times this year that cost us a finals berth, we were very competitive and certainly took it all the way against the top sides in this year’s competition. Probably the most courageous of these was against Sunnybank in the second round at Yoku Rd. Down on regular starters due to injury and player promotions we took on the Bank, who were top of the table. It was a physically brutal game and we lost a number of players though the game. In the end we went down 24 to 12 but not for a couple of bounces of the ball we could have very nearly won. The level of commitment and the courage shown by our boys on that day captures the essence of the team this year. Against a much larger side we fiercely fought right to the end and it was probably our best performance of the year, even though we lost on the day.

For the boys finishing with the colts program this year we encourage you to continue forward to Grades next year. The calibre of your character is exactly what is needed to continue the culture of our club. To those boys continuing on in colts next year, the lessons you have learnt this year will hold you in good stead for next year and you are better, more skilful and smarter rugby players than you were last year and will be a great asset to GPS colts program next year.

Brisbane Colts Two

Coaches: Andy Tucker, Mark Anderson, John Parkin(M)

Season 2015 for Colts 2 commenced with an initial squad of 42 that quickly trimmed to a playing group of 38 for the majority of the season. Ably coached by Andy "Tucks" Tucker & Mark "Ando" Anderson, the season could best be summarised as 'mixed' with Colts 2 coming up just short of meeting the finals, due largely to a mid- season set of inconsistent results that saw us just miss out in the end.

A big part of the season was rotation of players across positions and weekly changes to the playing group as interchanges occurred between Colts 1 & 2 as will always be expected. The relationship between both teams coaches and managers was excellent and a big thank you to Nigel and Shep, for not only being clear on the Colts 1 requirements each week, but always considerate to minimising the impact on the Colts 2 ability to field strong and competitive teams.

Training each Tuesday & Thursday was largely well attended and where an expectation of weekend selection was attendance to twice weekly training where ever possible, always conscious though of University and early work commitments to this age group. Training as a group and split between Forwards & Backs was a constant theme with Tucks & Ando sharing that load all season with great energy and commitment to the playing group.

Group discussion pre each training session was a strong part of the Colts 2 culture for the year, sometimes a sermon in Welsh from "Tucks" re the dark art of forward play he required, a considered Wingers reflection from "Ando" on key moves for the backs or a reminding comment from this author on the weekend team and the game ahead.

Throughout the season there were a number of key games where we left feeling "if only we'd just did this or that?", with defeats against Brothers & Helensvale during crucial periods proving to be turning points in the season. However there were many highlights across the season and notably the Home & Away victories against Sunnybank that demonstrated on both occasions the exceptional character and talent within the team. Sunnybank away was an absolute thriller, topped only by the return game at Yoku Rd where with the last kick of the game and playing on the main field for the first time in the season, Colts 2 landed a 40metre penalty to seal a great victory enjoyed by all.

Making the season for Colts 2 in 2015 was most definitely a great group of young men who made up the squad and were a real credit to the GPS Rugby Club and themselves. Competition was tough for places throughout the year, rotations were frequent and flexibility and understanding was maturely handled by all. Throughout the season a great culture developed within the team, home and away games were always supported by non-playing squad members, humour was always present, touch duties were shared willingly among the wounded and positive open communication existed across the team for the whole season.

On behalf of Colts 2, I'd also like to acknowledge Mike & Bella Dowsett for running the water all year, Jodie for Tuesday night fitness training and a special thank you to Herbie, Matt Turner and Team for running such an exceptional rugby club that is GPS.

Golden Gallopers

Season 2015 has been another good one for the GPS Golden Gallopers, the Club’s well-aged, but not so wise, over 35s rugby team.

Thanks to Treasurer Alby’s creative accounting, we secured a record number of financial players/members. And as with seasons past, stories of our former rugby deeds were as heroic as they were false.

The GGs have enjoyed about a half dozen games and a few carnivals, including our own Great Western Rumble, that is fast becoming one of the highlights of Golden Oldies festivals. We started in March so for those tempted to throw the pig-skin around, you can see there is generally a 2-3 week break between games.

Some entertaining rugby was played on frosty Friday nights, sometimes even by us. Highlights included the season opener against Wests at Sylvan Road where we were victorious against the old foe in a scintillating display of “running” rugby. The fact the ref didn’t have a whistle may or may not have contributed (our eyesight is bad, our hearing worse). And of course our Ladies Day held during the Prems game against Wests which gave us a chance to thank our wives and partners for letting us indulge in our rugby fantasies. But the clincher is and will remain the camaraderie and enjoyment of pretending to be young again with good mates. Playing Golden Oldies is great, playing at the GPS Golden Gallopers is even better. Many thanks to the GGs committee, our sponsors Hotel LA and Bank of Queensland The Gap, plus the continued support from Billy’s Meats and Lorraine for her seemingly 24/7 commitment to us and the GPS club overall.

The only pre-requisite to becoming a Golden Galloper is an enjoyment of rugby and playing in the right spirit (ability to catch, pass and tackle are optional bonuses). Feel free to contact us on the details below if you have even an inkling of wanting to re-live former glories.

Treasurer’s Report

From a financial point of view, the second year of operations as united entity, GPS Rugby Club Inc. has produced a profit from rugby operations in excess of $180,000. Whilst this figure fell short of the budget target, it remains a pleasing financial outcome and has provided a $66K increase to the club’s cash reserves. It should be noted that the profit figure includes $45K of stock which has been carried to the balance sheet for sale in 2016.

The following items form the primary income drivers for the club: • Playing Fees & Membership $ 383K • Canteen & Merchandise $ 343K • Sponsorship $ 283K • Functions & Fundraising $ 133K

As always, the club is highly reliant on generous sponsorships and goodwill of club members & supporters. During 2015, this sponsorship & accumulated cash reserves have been deployed in a number of facility upgrades within the club as follows: • Completion of the canteen major refurbishment project $50K • Major refit of the gymnasium $20K • Construction of a new BBQ area $10K

Building on the excellent financial monitoring and reporting system introduced by Howard Murray in 2014, the club continues to improve systems of internal controls and budget modelling. I would like to acknowledge the input and support of Matt Turner in assisting with the implementation of these procedures. Matt took it upon himself to assume control of all day to day book-keeping and financial control which enabled accurate and educated business decisions. Not only did this save the club substantial money, it allowed the executive team to formulate strategies to boost income at home game functions and reduce costs substantially through improved supplier agreements and stock management. Matt’s input will be sadly missed.

I would like to thank all sponsors, volunteers and club members for their contributions toward the club, in particular Lorraine Gorman for her sterling efforts in the highly successful canteen operations. Quite simply, the club could not function without the outstanding community support afforded by the Green & Blue fraternity.

2016 looks to be a challenging year; however the clubs substantial cash reserves should enable further implementation of processes and facility improvements to maintain GPS Rugby as a successful and well administered rugby club.

Finally, my thanks to President David Park, my fellow board members and to the club’s executive team, Anthony Herbert, Matthew Turner and Martin Southwood for their contributions to 2015’s club operations and financial success.

Darren Huntley Hon Treasurer.
