Flanagan,Chairman SUBJECT: Approval of Standards for the Preparation of Modem Standard Arabic and Arab Culture Teachers (FK) In pursuit of its goal to improve teacher quality, the State Board of Education (SBE) receives proposals for the adoption and revision of program standards for teacher preparation. When applicable, the proposed standards are developed to reflect and support Michigan's K-12 Curriculum Framework and Benchmarks, as well as standards adopted by national professional/specialty area organizations. The SBEapproved World LanguageStandards for all the World Languages, Bilingual Education, and English as a Second Languageendorsement areas at its July 7, 2004 meeting. In response to evidence of significant need and through the leadership of State Board member, Marianne Yared McGuire,a referent group of experts In Modem Standard Arabic and Arab Culture was convened and designed the proposed Modem Standard Arabic and Arab Culture Standards using the framework for the approved world language standards. These standards are designed to align with the K-12 content standards in the Michigan Curriculum Framework, the draft K-12 Guidelinesfor LanguagesOther Than English, as well as national standards as presented in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (2006). In April and May 2007 a letter was sent to selected groups/associations, all Michigan teacher preparation institutions, and a random sample of Intermediate and local school districts (Attachment A) asking them to review and comment on the draft standards listed on the Office of ProfessionalPreparation Services website. As presented in Attachment B, the standards reflect the feedback received. It is recommendedthat the State Board of Education aDDrovethe Modern Standard Arabic and Arab Culture (FK) standards for the QreDarationof Modern Standard Arabic and Arab Culture teachers. as discussed in the SuDerintendent's memorandum dated Jul~ 30. 109].     B O A R D H I G H L I G H T S Highlights from the December 16, 2020 Regular Meeting(s) of the Wayne RESA Board of Education. The Board received a pre-recorded virtual student choir performance from “The Voice of Victory” of the David Ellis Academy. Introductions were made by Kenya Hildreth, School Administrator and Talana Perry, Principal of Curriculum and Instruction. Also, the Detroit Youth Choir Director, Anthony White, shared a conversation with board members. The Board received an in depth presentation regarding the work occurring to support Wayne County Special Education students during COVID-19. The presentation highlighted requirements under the law to meet the needs of students with special needs; what unique things districts are doing to meet these requirements in both virtual and adjusted school learning environments; what Wayne RESA is doing to support local districts in these efforts. Karen Howey, Assistant Superintendent of Special Education, and Lois Vaughn-Hussain, Special Education Consultant spoke to the many details.
