    Berlin, 18. August 2021 Extent of damage On the night from 14th to 15th July, heavy rain resulted in quickly rising water levels of a number of smaller rivers, e.g., the rivers Ahr and Erft, in the federal states of Rheinland-Pfalz and Nordrhein-Westphalen. Many villages and smaller towns situated at these rivers experienced flooding which surpassed the expected extreme high-water events (likelihood of once in 100-200 years). The floods caused massive damages to buildings, streets, but also vegetation alongside these rivers. In addition, many more houses experienced flooding of the basement and ground floor. Only for the Ahr valley alone, it is estimated that 17,000 people have lost their homes; 133 people have died and 766 were hurt (as reported by SWR on 13 August 20211). Since the catastrophe response is organised on the municipal and federal level, it will take more time to arrive at general numbers encompassing all the districts in both federal states. With regard to damages to cultural property, the extent is still unclear as not one organisation or official institution is tasked to gather this information, including Blue Shield. We can say that the full spectrum of cultural property has been hit: archives, museums, libraries and monuments & sites (including churches). The last group is expected to show the worst damage as they could not be evacuated and are more susceptible to the second wave of damage, i.e., through demolitions or simply bad repairs. With this many livelihoods having been lost and insurance companies being more interested in saving costs (building new houses), privately owned monuments face a high risk of disappearing.

The term interglacial complex is a short term for a tight complex of interglacials, interstadials and breviglacials, separating a complex of warm periods from the long glacial periods (euglacials). In the terrestric environment the interglacial complexes are represented by soil clusters (solcomplexes). Therein which occur interglacial and interstadial soils of different types in the loess environment separated by thin beds of loess or loess derivates (breviglacials). This article considers the mutilation and simulation of solcomplexes. Frequently, fossil solcomplexes present themselves as diminished to a few soils or to one single soil. This mutilation of solcomplexes can be due to soil convergence (soils of different warm periods – interglacials, interstadials – merge to form optically one soil), syn-solcomplex erosion or post-solcomplex erosion and sometimes to soil disguise. Conversely solcomplexes may be simulated by narrowing of soils which belong to different interglacial complexes and moreover by soil divergence (splitting of a soil of one single warm period by an interlayer of rock) or by reworked soil sediment.   • Der Ahr-Radweg
    Der Ahr-Radweg Radeln und Wohlfühlen im Ahrtal Wildromantische Flusslandschaft, zerklüftete Felsformationen, sattgrüne Wälder und wilde Kräuterwiesen Mitten durch die aufregende Landschaft des Ahrtals schlängelt sich dieser malerische Radwanderweg. Die ca. 80 Kilometer zählende Tour startet an der Ahrmündung bei der Barbarossastadt Sinzig und führt mitten durchs Rotweinparadies Ahrtal bis hin nach Blankenheim, wo der eigenwillige Nebenfluss des Rheins entspringt. Die Radelstrecke entlang der Ahr ist mühelos von Freizeitradlern zu bewältigen. Teils geht’s über ausgebaute Radwege, teils über befestigte Wirtschafts- und Waldwege – immer an der Ahr entlang. Im oberen Ahrtal nutzt man einmal die Straße und: Wer es gern bequem mag, kann sich zwischen Sinzig und Ahrbrück etappenweise von der Bahn mitnehmen lassen. Ahr-Radweg Der Ahr-Radweg eignet sich hervorragend als entspannende Freizeittour, lädt immer wieder ein zum Verweilen, Schauen und Genießen. The emphasis of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) planning was in the north where the Canadians and British of Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery's 21st Army Group were to be the first across, followed by the Ninth United States Army, also under Montgomery. Once Montgomery crossed, the rest of the American armies to the south, 12th Army Group under General Omar N. Bradley and 6th Army Group under General Jacob L. Devers, would cross. On 7 March 1945, all that Slegburg changed.
