20092009 SSEASON PPREVIEW If a person could only use one word to de- scribe the 2009 Grove City College baseball team as it prepares for the upcoming season, the adjec- tive “experienced” would be an excellent choice. Grove City welcomes back 18 lettermen from the Wolverines’ historic 2008 season. The Wolver- ines became the first Presidents’ Athletic Confer- ence team to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament last year. Now, Grove City will look to make a return trip to the NCAA regionals as several key contributors are back in the fold. Grove City welcomes back five full-time starters in the field, several part-time starters and an experienced pitching staff as the Wolverines pursue their fourth conference title in an eight-year span. Versatility will also be a key for the Wolverines as several players are capable of performing well at numerous positions on the diamond. PITCHING Grove City returns the bulk of its starting rota- tion in 2009, including junior Mike Herringshaw and sophomore Cory Metcalf. Herringshaw made 18 Senior Zach Hillegas is a three-year letterman total appearances and led the Wolverines with six as a starting pitcher for Grove City. He struck out 38 batters in 36 innings last season. REVIEW victories.

P Metcalf, meanwhile, tied for the team lead with Herringshaw and Metcalf started Grove City’s eight starts last season. He threw a complete game two games at the NCAA New York Regional last in Grove City’s PAC Tournament win over Thiel last May. Senior fireballer Zach Hillegas is back after fan-

S ning 38 batters in 36 innings. He too made eight starts last year and will likely be a key member of the rotation. Several other veterans will compete for a spot in the rotation. Sophomores Chip Hasek and Andy Klimek each made three starts in 2008 and could challenge for a full-time spot in the rotation. Grove City’s will also be stocked with experienced arms this spring. Senior Matt Tindall picked up two wins in 14 appearances last year. He is Grove City’s most experienced reliever. Also back is sophomore Steve Stombaugh, who went 1-0 as a freshman. Stombaugh also added a in his rookie season. Sophomore J.T. Seelman also returns after lettering in 2008. Junior Mark Scriven saw time in the bullpen last year and may see spot duty on the mound in 2009. INFIELD Several familiar faces return this season for Grove City as a number of players will battle for time. Senior Ben Wilson returns for his third season Junior Mark Scriven will likely be one of Grove as the Wolverines’ starting shortstop. 20092009 SSEASON PPREVIEW Several players will battle for time at the other three infield positions. At third base, Scriven and junior Zach Wilson both saw considerable time last season. Versatile sophomore Scott Moran also split time between third base and the outfield in 2008. Junior Tyler Thompson, who hit .282 in 18 ap- pearances last year, will also compete for time at third base after moving across from first base. A number of players are expected to challenge for time at second base, including Zach Wilson and sophomore Andrew Patterson. Senior Brad Stombaugh hit .404 in 29 starts at first base last year and is the incumbent there. Senior Cody Koontz is a three-year letterman at the corner infield positions. He is also in the infield mix, as well as at DH. Sophomore Marcus Magister moves from the outfield to catcher this year and has the inside track to replace three-year starter Ray Mertz. He belted

three home runs in just 37 at-bats last year. S

City still returns plenty of talent in the outfield. P Like in the infield, the Wolverines return one full-time holdover and numerous other veterans. REVIEW Senior speedster Seth Thompson is a three- year letterman in left field and will likely lead off again this year. In 2008, Thompson swiped a dozen bases and scored 33 runs. He will slide over to center this season. Scott Moran played extensively in right field while fellow sophomore Butch Kriger saw time in the outfield and at DH. Scott Moran hit .348 as a rookie while Kriger hit .388 and slugged .534. Sophomore Dan Quirk played in 16 games in 2008 and is a candidate for time in the outfield, as are classmates Robert Pecchio and Kyle Wolff. SCHEDULE Grove City will play each of the eight other Presi- dents’ Athletic Conference squads three times this season, giving the Wolverines a 24-game league schedule. The Wolverines are looking to claim one of the four berths in the season-ending PAC Champion- ship Tournament May 7-9. The conference cham- pion will once again advance to the NCAA Tourna- ment. 20082008 IIN RREVIEW The 2008 edition of the Grove City College baseball team did not set records for wins, games played, runs, home runs or any other team statis- tic. But the Wolverines did do something that no team in program or Presidents’ Athletic Conference history had ever done before: earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament. Grove City captured the PAC Championship Tournament and received the league’s first-ever automatic bid in baseball. By advancing to the New York Regional, the Wolverines became the first PAC team in 24 years to reach the NCAA Tournament. In addition, senior center fielder Brian Moran became a consensus Division III All-American and earned Division III Rawlings Gold Glove honors. Grove City opened the 2008 season by going 3-3 in a six-game trip to Orlando, Fla. The Wolver- ines split a season-opening doubleheader March 15 against Trinity Christian (Ill.). Moran doubled home Seth Thompson in the ninth inning to force extra innings. Grove City fell to 2-2 in the conference two days later by dropping both ends of a double- header at Thiel. But the Wolverines rebounded April 9 to sweep a doubleheader from Oberlin at the Lorain Pipe Yard. Senior pitcher Chris Bowser did not allow an earned run in six innings during Grove City’s 15-1 win in the opener. In Game Two, Scott Moran doubled, singled and scored three runs as the Wolverines notched a 9-2 win. Grove City moved to 3-3 in the conference by splitting an April 12 doubleheader with visiting Waynesburg. Waynesburg pulled out an 11-10 win in the opener but Grove City used an eight-run eighth inning to earn an 11-4 win in Game Two.
