According to John Robinson, one of the event’s planners, the event has been getting bigger and bigger each year. Last year the team collected around 8,246 pounds of e-waste and nearly filled a 24-foot truck. They also collected nearly 585 pounds of household batteries and plenty of used athletic shoes. “We ask for an optional donation to fund other environmental projects at the school,” said Robinson “But the main goal is provide a convenient opportunity for people to get rid of electronics responsibly. This event creates the opportunity for functioning electronics to find a new home – and have a second life. We’ll also hand out flyers at the event to let people know where they can recycle all of their waste throughout the year.” “The event started because our committee members are self-proclaimed tree-huggers and consider ourselves knowledgeable about what can be recycled and where, but we constantly needed to compare notes on where we could take a lot of these items,” said Robinson. “Companies are constantly changing on what they will take and if there is a charge for them. Often you need to drive to the outskirts of town and try and get there before they close. We know that the more difficult it is to recycle, the fewer the number of people will actually do it. Hopefully, this will make it easier for folks.”

Ten years ago, Kathy Coleman and a group of like-minded colleagues looked at the arts situation in Portland and found it lacking in areas that involved people with disabilities. Not only were there hardly any organizations for people with disabilities who wanted to express themselves, but there were few places where disabled people could create art. So Coleman and a group of concerned friends founded the Disability Art and Culture Project (DACP) with a mission to help people with disabilities express themselves artistically. Over the years, the non-profit group mostly has worked in the area of dance, offering a weekly dance class that encourages participation from anyone with any kind of disability. “We are integrated and inclusive,” explained Coleman, artistic director of DACP. “We work with any kind of disability, Members of the and we include people who don’t have Inclusive Arts Vibe disabilities, as well. Happy Birthday

PARTY PLANNED FOR Beverly! NORTHEAST PORTLAND’S FAMOUS CHILDREN’S AUTHOR By Janet Goetze for the Hollywood Star News Portlanders are ready to celebrate the 100th birthday of Beverly Cleary, the author of books about Ramona, Beezus and Henry Huggins and their activities around Klickitat Street. Oregon Public Broadcasting will offer a free advance showing of a documentary, “Discovering Beverly Cleary,” from 2 to 4 p.m. April 2 at the Hollywood Theatre, 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd. The documentary, the first made about the life and legacy of the native Oregonian, will air on OPB at 8 p.m. April 7, said Lauren Elkanich, OPB public relations manager. Those attending the birthday party at the theater may sign a birthday card for the author and watch artist Tracy Dockray illustrate Ramona, one of Cleary’s characters beloved by readers. The first 100 families at the party also may receive an advance copy of the book, “Walking with Ramona: Exploring Beverly Cleary’s Portland,” by Laura O. Foster, which will be published later this year. Earlier on April 2, walking tours around the Grant Park neighborhood, where Cleary spent much of her girlhood, will begin at the Hollywood library, 4040 N.E. Tillamook St. However, registration is required and a waiting list is established for the walks starting at noon, 12:30 and 1 p.m., Elkanich said. Registration is available in the library and at multcolib.org/events/beverly-cleary. Beverly Bunn Cleary was born in McMinnville and lived on a farm in Yamhill until age 6. Her first autobiography is titled “A Girl From Yamhill.” Her parents moved to Portland about the time she started school and initially she had difficulty learning to read. She later mastered the skill, of course, attending Fernwood Elementary School, now called the Fernwood campus of the Beverly Cleary School. She graduated from Grant High School and went on to receive a degree in library science from the University of Washington. She started writing books she thought would appeal to youngsters who wanted to read about children like themselves. The first, Henry Huggins, about a boy, his friends and his dog, was published in 1950. After the Henry books came stories about Beezus, little sister Ramona, Ralph S. Mouse, and twins, Mitch and Amy, inspired by her own twin children. Cleary, the winner of many literary awards, has lived in Carmel, California for many years.

“ I would like to take this opportunity to tell everyone how awesome Sue Coon and James Coon are! They were both extremely patient in helping us through the

process of selling our home of 18years... and in helping me w/the purchase of my new home. They always took the time for my frantic calls, texts and emails when I was needing extra support or more detailed explanations. I always felt they were doing their very best“ for me - which made me feel confident I was doing the right thing for myself. I can’t imagine anyone being more ethical or straight-forward as Sue & James....and they did it with humor too. I was referred to Sue & James through a mutual friend - and I’ve told that friend a zillion times how grateful I was for their names. ~ Barb Hopp, NE Portland resident
