The thesis explores the relationship between the Australian folk revival and Australian Trade Unions. It provides a detailed study of events in the post war history of the union movement and the folk revival as evidence of a long relationship between them. Through a series of interviews with songwriters, and a discussion of folk revival magazines and folk song books, the thesis investigates the details of the connections between the two movements, and the social and political effects of these movements on changes that have occurred in Australia since the end of World War 2.

  • 13/Australian Hip Hop's Multi
AUSTRALIAN HIP HOP’S MULTI- 13/ CULTURAL LITERACIES / A SUBCULTURE EMERGES INTO THE LIGHT / TONY MITCHELL uch has been written in recent years about the relationship between hip hop Mculture, pedagogy and youth literacies in an African-American context (Ibrahim 2003; Dimitriades 2004; Ginwright 2004; Richardson 2006). However, hip hop is also being used increasingly in the broader educational contexts of language learning and popular culture studies both in the US and throughout the rest of the world. Hip Hop Studies is now a discipline taught in US universities (Forman & Neal 2004) and is gradually spreading to educational contexts in other parts of the world. In Hiphop literacies, Elaine Richardson (2006) argues for “the depth, the importance, and the immediate necessity of acknowledging one of the most contemporary, accessible, and contentious of African American literacies, Hiphop literacies” (p.xv). She sets out to locate hip hop discourses “within a trajectory of Black discourses” and to consider hip hop as an oral and semiotic form of discourse, analysing “rap music and song lyrics, electronic and digital media, including video games, music videos, telecommunication 231 SOUNDS OF THEN, SOUNDS OF NOW / POPULAR MUSIC IN AUSTRALIA devices, magazines, ‘Hip hop’ novels, oral performances, and cinema” (Richardson 2006, p.xvi). Richardson’s study is restricted by two major limitations. Apart from looking at the use of African-American language in online German hip hop sites, neither considers the indigenising global spread of hip hop beyond the boundaries of African-American vernacular cultures, nor the non-linguistic but fundamentally semiotic aspects of hip hop such as beatboxing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti writing, which are arguably of equal importance to MCing as hip hop literacies.

  • Australian Hip Hop As Experimental History and Pedagogy1
The Reography of Reason: Australian Hip Hop as Experimental History and Pedagogy1 Tony Mitchell, University of Technology, Sydney Introduction: Australian hip hop vernacular In its thirty-year history, hip hop has developed strong pedagogical dimensions which relate not just to imparting the skills of MCing, DJing, graffiti and breakdancing, but also in terms of promoting lived practices of subcultural identity and skills workshops for fledgling hip hop artists and disadvantaged youth. Hip hop embraces a series of epistemologies which enable a wide range of young people of many different ethnic backgrounds to express personal, social and cultural oral histories and philosophies through music, sound, movement and visual art. Arguably hip hop has become a form of experimental history for the members of the „hip hop nation‟, enabling them to express investment and affiliation with the history of hip hop, from its „old school‟ days of Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Africa Bambaata to the present, as well as providing a means of embodying, illustrating and vocalising personal histories and connecting them with broader local, national and global social and cultural histories. Hip hop has a wide range of educational tropes in its lexicon, from the notion of „dropping science‟ to the various self-appointed grandmasters, doctors, professors and teachers who inhabit its history. As such it can be seem as a form of experimental history, in the sense used by Francis Bacon when he states: History of arts, and of nature as changed and altered by man,

  • Learning Resource Kit Written by Hip Hop Artist Mantra
LEARNING RESOURCE KIT WRITTEN BY HIP HOP ARTIST MANTRA 1 PRE-VISIT 2 G Man – Park Jam in the Bronx. Photograph by Henry Chalfant Since the early 1970’s, hip hop has provided a platform for artists all over the world to express themselves, share their ideas and articulate their points of view. From block parties in The Bronx, New York City, to arenas and stadiums all over the world, it has become one of the most popular music genres of our time. It goes far beyond just music though, hip hop is a culture; a powerful social movement encompassing DJing, MCing, breakdancing (B-Boys and B-Girls), graffiti art, beatboxing, beat production, fashion, language and more. This culture has often acted as a ‘voice for the voiceless’, a way for people to amplify their opinions and make their voices heard, where other forums for discussion might be difficult or even impossible to access. Hip hop is the permission to speak your mind, to be yourself. So when it arrived in Australia, first becoming popular in the 1980’s with the explosion of breakdancing, it was only natural that Australian hip hop artists would put their own spin on things, developing a uniquely Australian sound that would continue to evolve right up until today. Early acts like Def Wish Cast paved the way for the future success of artists such as Koolism, 1200 Techniques, Hilltop Hoods and Bliss n Eso. 30 years later, Australian hip hop is still going strong, enjoying mainstream commercial success and earning a legitimate place in the Australian music conversation.
