Meyer struggles as Rochester falls in Louisville

Rochester Red Wings– 5/9/15

LOUISVILLE, KY - The Louisville Bats used seven straight hits to begin the third inning against Rochester starter Alex Meyer to cruise to a 10-5 victory over the Red Wings at Louisville Slugger Field Saturday evening. Things started well for the Red Wings (16-12) against Louisville starter David Holmberg (1-3) as Aaron Hicks led off the game with a single and later scored on a Reynaldo Rodriguez base hit to give the Wings a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bats (12-17) used a one-out walk of Irving Falu and a Josh Satin sacrifice fly two batters later to knot the game at one after an inning of play. Meyer (2-2) was fortunate that Eugenio Suarez, the leadoff hitter in the third inning, was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple for the first out. Six consecutive singles by the Bats (12-17) followed to score four runs. Meyer recorded a before Yorman Rodriguez hit a long three-run to chase the righty. He finished his night by allowing eight runs on nine hits and one walk with two in 2.2 innings, the shortest outing by a Rochester starter this season. Louisville would add two runs in a fourth to stretch the advantage to 10-1. Danny Ortiz hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth. Ortiz has homered in back-to-back games and now leads the team with five home runs and 20 RBI. Hicks quietly reached base in four trips, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run scored. Next up: LHP Jason Wheeler (1-1, 5.40) opposes Louisville righty Jon Mascot (4-0, 2.78) as the Wings complete a brief six-game road trip Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Next Home Game: Monday, May 11 vs. Toledo at 7:05 p.m.

Three HRs Power Chattanooga to a 7-4 Win Over Jackson

Chattanooga Lookouts– 5/9/15

The Chattanooga Lookouts (16-12) scored six of their seven runs off of home runs en-route to a 7-4 win over the Jackson Generals (11-15). The victory was the team's third in a row and seventh out of their last eight games. For the seventh time this season the Lookouts struck first at home. This time the first runs of the game came off the bat of Travis Harrison who unloaded a three-run shot in the first inning. Chattanooga is now 7-0 at home when they score the first run. Jackson scored their only run off of starter Greg Peavey (W, 2-1) in the second inning. Peavey finished the day only allowing that one run on five hits in five innings. Insurance runs were tacked on by the Lookouts in the fifth and sixth. With two outs and nobody on Miguel Sano blasted his sixth home run of the year to give the team four runs on the night. Their lead continued to build an inning later in the sixth. Two walks by Kepler and Wickens set the stage for a Byron Buxton sacrifice fly. With that sac fly Buxton has now driven in a run in eight straight games. The Lookouts' final runs of the night came on another home run, this time a two-run shot by Jorge Polanco. In the seventh inning Jackson pulled within three-runs when Tyler Smith belted a three-run shot. The Generals rally stopped there however as Madison Boer and DJ Johnson (S,1) combined for two shutout innings. The final game of the series is tomorrow at 2:15 pm with gates set to open at 1:00 pm. League ERA leader DJ Baxendale (2-0, 0.86) will get the start for Chattanooga against fellow right-hander Stephen Landazuri (0-1,2.66).

Knecht’s sac fly ices Hammerheads, 3-2, in the tenth

Fort Myers Miracle– 5/9/15

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 9, 2015) - Marcus Knecht capped off a stellar night at the plate with a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth inning to walk-off the Fort Myers Miracle in a 3-2 win and complete the sweep of the Jupiter Hammerheads at Hammond Stadium. Knecht brought a large crowd of 4,009 fans to their feet with a bases loaded drive in the tenth. The inning started with an infield hit from Alex Swim off Jupiter reliever . After striking out Bryan Haar, Del Pozo (0-1) surrendered a base hit to Niko Goodrum and bloop single to Chad Christensen to load the bases. Knecht stepped up and whistled a 1-0 pitch into left. Hammerheads left fielder Austin Dean caught the ball, but his throw sailed behind a sliding Swim to give the Miracle a fourth walk-off win of the season. Involved in each Miracle run on the night, Knecht helped break a scoreless tie in the fifth. With one out, Knecht hammered a 1-0 pitch from Jupiter starter Scott Lyman into the gap in left center for a triple, his first of the year. Michael Quesada then drove Knecht in with a sacrifice fly to deep center to put the Miracle up 1-0. In the seventh, Knecht stirred up a two-out rally by beating out an infield hit to the shortstop. Hammerheads reliever Tyler Bremer then plunked Quesada to put runners on first and second. On Bremer's next pitch, Logan Wade looped a base hit into center and Knecht crossed home to give the Miracle a 2-0 advantage. Fort Myers starter Brett Lee held the lead through seven scoreless innings, but struggled in the eighth. Chris Hoo and Yefri Perez picked up back-to-back singles. J.T. Riddle failed to bunt the runners over and was retired on a strikeout, but then Swim tried to catch Perez off the bag at first. Swim threw errantly and the base runners advanced to second and third. With Dean at the plate, Lee tossed a wild pitch in the dirt and Hoo scored to cut the Miracle lead to 2-1. Brian Gilbert entered from the bullpen and gave up an RBI single to Brian Anderson to tie the game before retiring the side. Lee got a no decision after 7.1 innings and two runs allowed, one earned. Retiring the first 14 hitters in a row, Lee tallied three strikeouts and recorded 12-of-22 outs on the ground. Lyman also received a no decision for Jupiter in six innings and was credited with four hits, one run and five strikeouts. Luke Westphal worked around two hits in the ninth and tenth for a pair of scoreless innings in relief. Westphal (1-2) picked up the win and stranded the go-ahead run at third base in the top of the tenth. The Miracle (14-16) have now won five consecutive and played 11 extra inning games in the first 30 of the season. Fort Myers hosts the Dunedin Blue Jays for the first of a four-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Miracle offices at (239) 768-4210 or order online at www.miraclebaseball.com.

Minor League Notes: Kernels pitching has been great

Cedar Rapids Gazette– 5/9/15

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Quad Cities pitching staff has been other other-worldly the first month of the Midwest League season. It’s why the River Bandits have a 23-6 record. The Cedar Rapids Kernels pitching staff, meanwhile, has been just other-worldly. The Kernels have a 2.29 team , which somehow pales in comparion for QC’s 2.04. Everyone expected the starting rotation to be strong, and it has been. Mat Batts, Michael Cederoth, Stephen Gonsalves, Jared Wilson, John Curtiss, Felix Jorge, Zack Tillery (one start) and big leaguer Ricky Nolasco (one rehab start) have combined for a 2.69 ERA in 140 1/3 innings. What has been a surprise is the performance of the guys coming out of the bullpen. “Going in, we thought our relievers were our bigggest question mark,” Manager Jake Mauer. “But I tell you what, those guys out there have been great.” 13

How great? Miles Nordgren came in from extended in Fort Myers, Fla., for a couple of weeks due to injuries, didn’t give up a run in 3 1/3 innings but got sent back to extended. Cam Booser (0.64 ERA) has been a revelation with his mid-90s fastball from the left side. He has struck out 25 in 14 innings and has three saves. But it’s not just him. Sidearmer Trevor Hildenberger (0.60) has 20 strikeouts in 15 innings and given up just seven hits. Michael Theofanapoulos (1.26) has been as hard to hit as his last name is to spell. C.K. Irby (2.46) has allowed just six hits and struck out 16 in 11 innings. Randy LeBlanc (3.60) has more strikeouts than innings pitched, as does Sam Clay (3.86). Combined, the Kernels’ bullpen has fashioned a 1.74 earned run average in just shy of 100 innings. The Kernels have Mother’s Day off and then begin a seven-game homestand Monday, with Peoria and Quad Cities coming to town.

Sano clubs sixth Southern League homer

MiLB.com– 5/9/15

The power and production is starting to come back into Miguel Sano's game. Now the Twins are hoping the rest of his game follows suit. Minnesota's second-ranked prospect homered, doubled, walked and scored twice Saturday night as Double-A Chattanooga defeated visiting Jackson, 7-4, for its third straight win. The 21-year-old third baseman doubled to left field in the first inning and walked in the third. He clubbed a solo homer, his sixth of the season, to right in the fifth before flying out to end the sixth. Sano is tied for third in the Southern League in homers with Biloxi's Nick Ramirez, one behind teammate Adam Brett Walker and Montgomery's Richie Shaffer. The native of the Dominican Republic, who's struck out 28 times, also is second on the circuit with 17 walks, trailing Tennessee's Kyle Schwarber by two. MLB.com's No, 12 overall prospect, Sano is hitting .198 with 13 RBIs in 26 games. It's the highest his average has been since April 18, when he was batting .200, and he's only finished two games with an average north of the Mendoza line. The 6-foot-4 infielder batted .280 with 35 homers and 103 RBIs in 123 games across two levels in 2013 but sat out all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He struck out eight times and had one extra- base hit in his first six games this year. Things have been trending in the right direction since the calendar turned to May and the Lookouts returned home. Signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in 2009, Sano has hits in six of nine games on the current homestand and has reached base in every contest. Two of his three multi-hit efforts have come in the past three days against Jackson, including a 3-for-4 performance on Thursday. Twins top prospect Byron Buxton went 0-for-3, but he extended his RBI streak to eight games with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly that scored No. 15 prospect Max Kepler. Lookouts starter Greg Peavey (2-1) allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out one over five innings for the win. D.J. Johnson pitched around two hits in the ninth for his first Double-A save. Jackson starter Jake Zokan (1-1) yielded four runs on four hits over 4 2/3 frames. He issued three walks and struck out six but served up homers to Sano and Travis Harrison.
