B’nai B’rith launches year-long anniversary celebration Alamo Brandeis B’nai B’rith will host its October event on Sunday, Oct. 8 at the JCC, Room 227 starting at 10:30 a.m., launching a year-long celebration leading up to B’nai B’rith’s 175 anniversary in October 2018. B’nai B’rith was started by a group of 12 immigrants in a New York City cafe in 1843 who wanted to improve the condition of Jews in their community. Today, B’nai B’rith has grown into a global force, working to protect the Jewish community all over the world by speaking out against anti-Semitism, defending the State of Israel from biased multilateral organizations, advocating for seniors and using the traditions passed down through our storied history to maintain a sense of Jewish identity and continuity. SAN ANTONIO JEWISH WOMEN GATHER FOR MEGA CHALLAH BAKE The Mega Challah Bake, which included a social intermission in order for women to reunite and connect, served as the way to start the new year of 5778 with freshly baked bread and the sound of the shofar. Women lay leaders from each congregation and partnering organizations offered prayers for the month of Elul, for our country, for those affected by Hurricane Harvey, and prayers for the bread, which each woman had the honor of mixing and braiding. Later in the evening, the women took their dough home to bake, sharing their “work” with their families and friends for a sweet new year.
