GOLF HISTORY

The state golf tournament began as an open event in 1938, with Newnan coming away with the team trophy in a field that featured boys teams only. Canton and Griffin later captured the last two open titles in 1941 and 1942. The Georgia High School Association, meanwhile, officially sanctioned the first state tournament in 1943, as Lanier claimed the state Class A team title and Albany prevailed in a combined state Class B and state Class C field. The boys state tournament has since been held on a continuous basis for a total of 74 years through the 2016 competition. The top two region finishers qualify for the state tournament. Individual low medalist at region also qualify for state, even if that golfer is not on one of the top two team finishers. The first girls state tournament, on the other hand, was officially sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association in 1998. McIntosh (AAAA), Hardaway (AAA), Lovett (AA) and Brookstone (A) snared the first state team trophies in their respec- tive classifications. Only the region champions qualified for the state tournament in the first three years from 1998 -2000, but the second place team also advanced starting in 2001. Individual low medalist at region will also qualify for state, even if that golfer is not on one of the top two team finishers. DeKalb County has long fielded competitive teams on the state level, highlighted by three state championships claimed by three different boys squads. Avondale started the local victory parade with a AAA title in 1965, followed by triumphant efforts by Lithonia in AA in 1977 and Druid Hills in AA in 1986. Henderson also nearly won state three straight times in the late 1970s, losing out on a playoff on one occasion while finish- ing third or higher in each of those campaigns. Lakeside likewise annually made a push for state honors under coach Dwight Norris throughout the 1970s, while Chamblee, Dunwoody, Peachtree, Redan, Stone Mountain and Tucker are among many others that have also made their presence felt on the county, region and state levels at various times over the last three decades. Dunwoody ruled the local roost for most of the 1990s, winning the county tournament in 1990, 1991, 1994 and 1995. The Wildcats also rolled off nine straight Region 7AAAA titles from 1990 -98. The best state finish during that period came in 1991, when Dunwoody claimed sixth in the AAAA battle. Walker Kimbell served as head coach of the Wildcat machine through the 1996 season, while Michael Daniel was at the helm for the final two region crowns in 1997 and 1998. Individually, Michael Griffin led a parade of stars in posting low medalist honors at the Region 7AAAA tournament four straight times from 1994 -97. Tom Otero also won low medalist in 1991 with a sizzling 70. Lithonia enjoyed strong success in the early 1990s, highlighted by a 1992 campaign that included winning county and Re- gion 6AAA trophies and placing 15th at the state Class AAA showdown. Larry Ballard served as head coach for the Bulldogs, while Jody Hoek and Mac Brown won low medalist honors at county (79) and region (79) respectively. Lithonia also finished second in Region 6AAA in 1991. Druid Hills won county in 1993 under the leadership of coach Hugh Tankersley . The Red Devils also placed first in 6AAA in 1991, second in 6AAA in 1992 and first in 5AA in 1993 with Tankersley as coach. Druid Hills realized another region title in 5AA in 1994, with Karen Helfrich serving as coach. William Pettys led the individual charge. Chamblee snared Region 5AA honors in 1992 under the charges of coach Ken Townsel . Mark Pinson took low medalist honors individually at that battle with a solid 86 round. The Bulldogs returned to state again following runnerup performances behind Lovett in 5AA in 1995 and 1996. John Lafleur coached the 1995 unit, while Townsel returned to take the lead role in 1996. Stone Mountain put up several strong performances during the 1990s. The highlight came during the 1991 season, where the Pirates placed second at county and in Region 7AAAA and then took 13th at state. Coach Derald Long was led by Kanon Parkmon (81) at county and Jason Luckey (75) at region. Parkmon also fired a team - best 155 total over 36 holes at state, shooting consecutive rounds of 78 and 77. Long also guided the Pirates to a runnerup finish in 7AAAA and state berth in 1992, while coach Scott Luther ’s 1995 team placed second at the county war. Other boys state qualifiers in the decade from DeKalb County included Redan under Ballard in 1993 and 1994, Henderson under Jack Waters in 1994, Lakeside under John Hogan in 1997 and under David Hosking in 2001 and 2002 and Southwest DeKalb under Fred Dawston in 2001 and 2002. Redan also placed second at county in 1993, while Dunwoody and Henderson likewise snared runner -up honors in 1992 and 1994 respectively. Dunwoody has taken center stage among local girls entrants, claiming consecutive region titles in 7AAAA in 2000 and 5AAAA in 2001. Hosking also guided Lakeside to the girls Region 7AAAAA crown in 2001 and 2003 and second in 2002, while Dawston’s Southwest DeKalb Panthers made state as the Region 7AAAAA runnerup in 2001.

2018 SEASON IN REVIEW

In a 2018 season that produced only one state qualifying team from DeKalb County, Dunwoody’s boys still managed to produce many highlights while once again leading the way on the local level. Coach Doug Friedlander ’s Wildcats easily claimed a 10th consecutive county team crown, placing five golfers in the top six in the final individual standings. Dunwoody posted a final overall team score of 327, finishing 36 strokes ahead of the 363 effort carded by runner -up Chamblee and 105 clear of long -time main challenger Lakeside’s tally of 432. The Wildcats received a consistent effort across the board, as five players finished within six strokes of the team leader and county medalist in senior Nick Trembath . Trembath fired a stellar round of 79, good enough for a three -stroke triumph over Wildcat junior team- mate Jack Kerdasha ’s second place tally of 82. Seniors Patrick Caiaccio and Elijah Dwoskin also stayed in the thick of the hunt for individual honors to the very end, eventually settling for a share of third place with strong 83 rounds. Senior Cole Pickering battled his way to a sixth -place score of 85, while senior Ben White sat in a tie for 13th place following a solid 94 outing. Chamblee’s runner -up showing featured five golfers within four strokes of each other, with the top four earning top 10 overall county finishes. Senior Jimmy McClendon shined brightest among the Chamblee individual leaders, grabbing eighth place with a final tally of 89. Senior Phil McCrary and junior River Harper tied for ninth with 91 scores, followed by sophomore Carson Cooper in 11th at 92 and senior Parish Priestley in 12th at 93. Arabia Mountain’s super tandem of junior Torrance Allen and senior Aaron Allen prevented a top 10 sweep by Dunwoody and Chamblee, finishing fifth and seventh in the final individual standings with the strong respective rounds of 84 and 86. Lakeside, meanwhile, pulled out a thrilling team triumph in the girls county competition, scoring a 191 to the 192 of Chamblee in winning the event for the sixth time. Coach Robert Bokelman ’s Lady Vikings once again relied on the super sister tandem of juniors Kaylee Cornelius and Jayla Cornelius . Kaylee Cornelius finished second in the final individual race with a 95 score, one stroke ahead of her sister Jayla’s third place showing of 96. Chamblee, on the other hand, received a gold medal effort from junior Tiffany Li , who fired a 91 to finish four strokes ahead of Lakeside’s Kaylee Cornelius for low medalist honors. Junior Kristen Nwadike joined Li on the list of team scorers for the Lady Bulldogs, shooting a solid 101 round to finish fourth in the individual standings. Dunwoody’s boys also represented DeKalb County at the state tournament, firing a 643 to secure 14th place in the final Class AAAAAA team race. Caiaccio shined brightest individually for the Wildcats, carding a 158 score over 36 holes on the way to placing 46th overall. Super junior Jackson Perry and senior county champion Trembath backed up Caiaccio with scores of 161 for a share of 60th place, while Dwoskin (163; 68th), Pickering (167; 79th) and Warren (168; 80th) also made the state trip for Dunwoody.
