Canton and Griffin later captured the last two open titles in 1941 and 1942. The Georgia High School Association, meanwhile, officially sanctioned the first state tournament in 1943, as Lanier claimed the state Class A team title and Albany prevailed in a combined state Class B and state Class C field. The boys state tournament has since been held on a continuous basis for a total of 74 years through the 2016 competition. The top two region finishers qualify for the state tournament. Individual low medalist at region also qualify for state, even if that golfer is not on one of the top two team finishers. The first girls state tournament, on the other hand, was officially sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association in 1998. McIntosh (AAAA), Hardaway (AAA), Lovett (AA) and Brookstone (A) snared the first state team trophies in their respec- tive classifications. Only the region champions qualified for the state tournament in the first three years from 1998 -2000, but the second place team also advanced starting in 2001. Individual low medalist at region will also qualify for state, even if that golfer is not on one of the top two team finishers. DeKalb County has long fielded competitive teams on the state level, highlighted by three state championships claimed by three different boys squads. Avondale started the local victory parade with a AAA title in 1965, followed by triumphant efforts by Lithonia in AA in 1977 and Druid Hills in AA in 1986. Henderson also nearly won state three straight times in the late 1970s, losing out on a playoff on one occasion while finish- ing third or higher in each of those campaigns. Lakeside likewise annually made a push for state honors under coach Dwight Norris throughout the 1970s, while Chamblee, Dunwoody, Peachtree, Redan, Stone Mountain and Tucker are among many others that have also made their presence felt on the county, region and state levels at various times over the last three decades. Dunwoody ruled the local roost for most of the 1990s, winning the county tournament in 1990, 1991, 1994 and 1995. The Wildcats also rolled off nine straight Region 7AAAA titles from 1990 -98. The best state finish during that period came in 1991, when Dunwoody claimed sixth in the AAAA battle. Walker Kimbell served as head coach of the Wildcat machine through the 1996 season, while Michael Daniel was at the helm for the final two region crowns in 1997 and 1998. Individually, Michael Griffin led a parade of stars in posting low medalist honors at the Region 7AAAA tournament four straight times from 1994 -97. Tom Otero also won low medalist in 1991 with a sizzling 70. Lithonia enjoyed strong success in the early 1990s, highlighted by a 1992 campaign that included winning county and Re- gion 6AAA trophies and placing 15th at the state Class AAA showdown. Larry Ballard served as head coach for the Bulldogs, while Jody Hoek and Mac Brown won low medalist honors at county (79) and region (79) respectively. Lithonia also finished second in Region

  • Title: the Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher's Guide of 20Fh Century Physics
REPORT NSF GRANT #PHY-98143318 Title: The Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher’s Guide of 20fhCentury Physics DOE Patent Clearance Granted December 26,2000 Principal Investigator, Brian Schwartz, The American Physical Society 1 Physics Ellipse College Park, MD 20740 301-209-3223 [email protected] BACKGROUND The American Physi a1 Society s part of its centennial celebration in March of 1999 decided to develop a timeline wall chart on the history of 20thcentury physics. This resulted in eleven consecutive posters, which when mounted side by side, create a %foot mural. The timeline exhibits and describes the millstones of physics in images and words. The timeline functions as a chronology, a work of art, a permanent open textbook, and a gigantic photo album covering a hundred years in the life of the community of physicists and the existence of the American Physical Society . Each of the eleven posters begins with a brief essay that places a major scientific achievement of the decade in its historical context. Large portraits of the essays’ subjects include youthful photographs of Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Richard Feynman among others, to help put a face on science. Below the essays, a total of over 130 individual discoveries and inventions, explained in dated text boxes with accompanying images, form the backbone of the timeline. For ease of comprehension, this wealth of material is organized into five color- coded story lines the stretch horizontally across the hundred years of the 20th century. The five story lines are: Cosmic Scale, relate the story of astrophysics and cosmology; Human Scale, refers to the physics of the more familiar distances from the global to the microscopic; Atomic Scale, focuses on the submicroscopic This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government.

Stephen Green EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS James Jackson Basketball Coordinator Dr. Tekshia Ward -Smith ATHLETIC SPECIALIST Chris Chilton ATHLETIC SPECIALIST Mark Brock 2 DEKALB COUNTY’S LONG HISTORY OF STATE CHAMPIONS DeKalb County’s proud basketball history began and continues with a championship pedigree. The Clarkston boys brought home the first state trophy in 1940, and 41 other teams have since realized the big prize in the ensuing 76 years. From legendary coach Elmer Morrow ’s dominating boys teams at Druid Hills in the 1950s to the current boys powerhouses at Miller Grove and Columbia, the list of win- ners is an impressive one. Druid Hills knocked off Avondale (50 -44), Tifton (47 -44) and Jeff Davis (55 -42) in state finals in 1953, 1954 and 1957 respectively. Stone Mountain and Clarkston on the boys side, and Druid Hills and Stone Mountain among the girls served as the other early local powers. E.L. Rainey , another of DeKalb County’s original hoop coaching giants, led Stone Mountain to the Class B crown in 1957. Tom Church guided Clarkston to its second boys state championship with a victo- rious effort in the class B final in 1964. The girls matched the boys for the first time at Druid Hill in 1960, with Virginia Canady coaching that squad to the Class AAA title.
