Restorations on the back and book jacket; int. water stains in the frst volume; missing part of the plate with a general view of Moscow. Illustrated with 110 plates according to drawings by Damame-Démartrait and Robert Ker-Por- ter, representing the costumes, objects, customs and views of Russia. Breton de La Martinière published this handsome work on Russia following his book on China published by the same Parisian bookshop, Antoine Nepveu, at the heart of his collections of small works, specially dedicated to the study of mores and customs in different countries. BRETON de La Martinière (Jean-Baptiste-Joseph). La Russie, ou mœurs, usages et costumes des habitans de toutes les provinces de cet Empire (…). A Paris, Nepveu, 1813. 6 tomes en 3 vol. petit in-12, demi-basane fauve, dos lisse orné de flets et au fer doré (reliure de l’époque). Restauration aux dos et coiffes ; mouillure int. au premier volume ; manque un volet à la planche de la vue générale de Moscou. Belle ouvrage illustré de 110 planches d’après les dessins de Damame-Démartrait et Ro- bert Ker-Porter, représentant les costumes, objets, coutumes et vues de la Russie. Breton de La Martinière ft paraitre ce bel ouvrage sur la Russie à la suite de sa Chine publiée par le même libraire parisien, Antoine Nepveu. Cette publication fait partie d’une suite de petits ouvrages spécialement dédié à l’étude des mœurs et coutume de différents pays. Encouragé par le succès de cette collection, Breton de La Martinière publia à la suite, de 1813 à 1818, plusieurs voyages consacrés à l’Egypte et à la Syrie, à l’Espagne et au Portugal, à l’Illyrie et à la Dalmatie, et enfn au Japon. Breton indique dans sa préface ; La plupart des ouvrages que j’ai composé jusqu’ici, ont eu pour objet de dépouiller la géographie et la lecture des relations de voyages, de tout ce qu’elles pourraient offrir de fatiguant aux yeux des personnes du monde (…). 700 – 800 ¤ 5 • CALANI (Aristide).     Q ’H ’E 2009 LE ROLE DE L’INGÉNIEUR AUGUSTIN BETANCOURT DANS LA VIE ET L’OEUVRE DE L’ARCHITECTE AUGUSTE DE MONTFERRAND Valery Chouïski †1 Conservateur du Département d’Architecture du Musée de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Pétersbour Le célèbre ingénieur et l’architecte glorifié par la suite ont été étroitement liés pendant une période de huit ans, de 1816, date de l’arrivée d’Auguste Montferrand à Saint-Pétersbourg, à 1824, l’année du décès d’Augustin Betan- court. L’architecte devait à Betancourt non seulement les commandes de travaux les plus avantageuses, mais sa carrière vertigineuse toute entière. Cet état des choses tenait aux fonctions haut placées de Betancourt, à son autorité professionnelle d’ingénieur et de savant notable, mais aussi à sa proximité des milieux gouvernementaux, de la cour impériale et de l’empereur en per- sonne. En 1816, Betancourt âgé de 58 ans occupait une position solide dans la société russe et y bénéficiait d’une grande notoriété. Il avait le grade de lieutenant-général et était inspecteur du premier établissement supé- rieur technique en Russie, Institut du Corps des ingénieurs des voies de communication (aujourd’hui Université des voies de la communication), créé en 1809-1810 avec sa participation la plus active. Toujours en 1816, il a été nommé président du Comité pour les bâtiments et les travaux hydrauliques créé sur son initiative, l’organisme de construction le plus puissant de son temps, au sein duquel s’élaboraient les projets d’architec- ture et d’urbanisme aussi bien pour la capitale que pour d’autres villes de l’Empire.
