Bhanpuracanal is a projectfor providinginigation facility to Bhanpuraand Tehsil of Mandsaurdistriot. The project consistsof constructionof a control struoturein the reservoirof Gandhisagarin village Kawla and then conveyanceof water by cut andcover having RCC twin barrelsof 2.25m x 3,75m sizeeach. The lengthof cut and coverportion from controlstructure is 4390m and thenan openchannel of 1235m to join a smallriver knownas Reva river havingC.A, 62 sq.km,The waterthen runs for about2.5 KM. in the river andstopped by a barcageon RevaRiver. The main canalof this work is Left BankMain Canalof 28.84KM. Previouslythe canal systemwas an opengravity canal system ofLBC andRBC to inigate 9490 hectares. Now the systemis proposedhaving Main Canal as gravity canal. Then irrigation will be through wells by Micro- inigationsystem. Pumps and Sprinklers will be of thecultivators. The designeddischarge at control structureis 24 cumecs.Discharge of LBC at Head is 8.5 cumecs.Jackwell for Rupa canal and other systemshaving 24 cumecsdesigned discharge has beentaken for futurerequirement. , The following partsof this systeminspected (l) cut bnd coverproblematic reach 1500 m to 2620m; (2) ControlStructure; (3) Confluencepoint of canal with Reva River (4) Reva Banage;(5) Initial point of LBC. The cut and cover part between1500 to 2620 m is a problematicreach as the excavatedportion is collapsingvery fast' It is visiblethat the effectof slidingof sidesis 50 to B0m from cenheof the trench, The material excavatedis heterogeneousin natureand is cohesionless, bui it is not sand'It seemsto be weatheredrock powder' Previouslyin a video conference,it was suggestedto excavatethis portionin small lengthof about30 m The agencyhas done likewise they have excavatedthe portion successfullybut the nearbyRCC barrel under constructionagain submergedin huge slippedearth' During inspectionit was foundthat the adjacentcompleted box was not coveredwith soil by the contractor. It is suggestedthat before excavatingthe new segment, the already castedbarrel be fully coveredupto groundlevel with earth,so that earthpressure in this portionmay not exertpressure on adjacent"to be excavated"portion' The contractorhas also beensuggested to grout the masson 30 m awayon either.-sideupto-5 m.below CBL to improvebondage of soil mass"It is reportedthat the diaphragmwall was alsotried, but being verycostly; about Rs. 20 cr. it wasdiscarded. 2, Control structure- Well upto designedtop level casted' Shaftsare underconstruction. Embedded parts are in the processof fixing. 3. Confluence point of Reva fuver with canal:- The ExecutiveEngineer has informedthat the confluencepoint of canal with Reva River is not flushing. To overcomethis problem river training is to be done in aboutone Kilometre length. It is hereby instructedto train the river for 8.5 cumecsof canal'Portion between the piersof on way bridgeshould be slightly excavated.Keeping in mind safetyof structure,in all the spans,so that the waterwayas per designbed level maY be Provided. 4. RevaBarrage - 12 openingsof 6 m X 4 m verticalgates' for flood releaseand two outletsfor canalshaving two openingsof '.6

3m X Qm in RBC, threeopenings of. 3m X Qm in LBC. Designed dischargeofthe LBC is 8 cumebsCBL 381.40.FSD 1.60m. 5. The canalcould not be inspecfeddue to time constraint, Howeverthe portion in the initial reachas visible from Ch, 0 was seen.Slopes and bedprofile seemsto be in order. The EE hasbeen askedto divert the water comingfrom the catchmentarea of Reva River" It shouldbe divertedin the canalto make use of it during ensuing Kharif Crop. Ground water improvementwill be an additionaladvantage. After completionfeeder canal, full inigation will beavailable to this area.
