ABOUT THE DIRECTORY

This director offers a list of programs created by The Massachusetts Capacity Study research team in the process of conducting the survey of Institutions of Higher Education for the Massachusetts Capacity Study. The study team identified and reviewed 105 institutions of higher education operating in Massachusetts (using Department of Education lists as well as several online resources, including isleuth.com and the websites of individual IHEs). Within each of the 105 institutions, the study team identified Early Education and Care programs defined as those programs focused specifically on preparing students for employment in early education and care occupations (both ECE and OST), such as teacher, assistant teacher, provider, group leader, assistant group leader, program coordinator, director, administrator, resource and referral specialist, policy analyst, or researcher. Programs whose sole focus was on preparing graduates for employment in elementary or higher levels of education, or in other child-related occupations, such as clinical work with children were excluded. We relied on the programs’ own descriptions of their mission and/or the career options for graduates. Information provided in the Directory was collected in Spring and Summer 2005. HOW THE DIRECTORY IS ORGANIZED

The directory is organized alphabetically by college name, and then by degrees awarded (Certificate, Associates, Bachelors, and Masters). Each college/university listing contains the name of the school, address, telephone number, ECE/OST program name, contact information for each program, and the early childhood concentration area when available (i.e. infant/toddler, preschool, out-of-school time/ school-age child care, etc.) (see key at bottom of directory pages).

Indices are also provided – after the individual listings – which organize the colleges by (1) concentration, (2) degrees awarded, (3) Massachusetts EOHHS regions, and (4) college type (community, state, private colleges).
