This heritage impact assessment and historic buildings appraisal has been commissioned ahead of the submission of a planning application for the proposed redevelopment of the site for hotel use with associated car parking to the side and rear. The assessment has identified that the majority of the Rising Sun complex is of a later date than the 18th century and is largely of little historical or architectural significance. However, structural elements within the western loft area have been identified as potentially dating back to the 18th century, and it should not be discounted that earlier structural elements may survive beneath the present 20th century plaster and timber façades within the western part of the complex. There is also the potential that early, demolished phases of the Rising Sun may survive below ground level of the southern car park. There is one non-designated heritage asset listed on the Derbyshire HER as being located within the boundaries of the site, the 20th century wall post box (HER 13807). While the site visit did not identify the location of the wall post box on the site, there is the potential that it may survive beneath the exterior 20th century plaster of the Rising Sun façade. The site of the Rising Sun complex is located c.1.2km to the east of the Scheduled Navio Roman Fort and Vicus (NHLE 1017505), and is potentially located along the Hope Valley part of the postulated route of the Templeborough to Navio Roman Road. Whilst no evidence of Romano-British remains have been identified within the boundaries of the site, nor within the 200m wider study area, there is considered to be some limited potential for such remains to survive below ground within the northern part of the site, given both the site’s location within a wider landscape of Romano-British remains and the largely undeveloped north lawn of the Rising Sun complex. It is therefore recommended that if planning permission is granted for the demolition of the Rising Sun complex, an intra-demolition watching brief is undertaken so that any potential concealed earlier fabric within the building can be recorded and preserved via record. An intra-demolition watching brief will also allow for the potential re-location of the wall post box recorded within the Derbyshire HER database. It is also recommended that a watching brief be carried out during the removal of the hardstanding of the southern car park, and the excavation of any new foundation and service trenches for the proposed hotel complex in order to record any below-ground archaeological remains that may be associated with the early phases of the Rising Sun Public House. A watching brief should also be carried out during the topsoil stripping of the north lawn for the new car park, as there is some potential for Romano-British remains to survive within this largely undeveloped area. ii A Heritage Impact Assessment and Historic Buildings Appraisal of the Rising Sun, Bamford, Derbyshire TABLE OF CONTENTS 1 INTRODUCTION
