Throughout my UNC Campus - Great Hall career I have been involved in the local, state and in some instances national response to bioterrorism agents and emerging infectious diseases including SARS, influenza A 2009, MERS CoV, Zika and Ebola viruses. With that COMING TO NEWMAN THIS LENT expertise in mind, Fr. Tim asked me to share some thoughts. There are 3 major messages I think are important to understand. 1. Influenza is still far more dangerous to all of you than CoVID 19; therefore, even at this late stage get a flu shot it you haven’t already. As of Feb. 15, CoVID 19 has caused 1665 deaths among 1.33 billion Chinese; by contrast there have been 75 influenza deaths in the 10.5 million North Carolinans this year. Death occurs in the same populations with both Opportunities for Prayer, Group Spiritual Direction, viruses: those over 65 or immunocompromised Contemplative Prayer, the Sacrament of Penance, and folks. Influenza is still far more important here Continuing Faith Formation including: in the US and will likely remain so. There have been 15 cases of CoVID 19 in the entire US and no deaths. Introduction to the Practice of 2. Why are they cancelling flights in and out Contemplative Prayer of China? This is all about epidemiology of SATURDAY MORNINGS IN LENT: 2/29 THROUGH 4/4 - 10:00 TO 11:00 AM respiratory infections. The most effective way IN THE NEWMAN LIBRARY to prevent the spread of this virus (for which there is no vaccine) is by “social distancing”, Would you like to learn how to practice contemplative prayer as a way to draw closer which simply means you need to remain 6 to God through Lent? Join your fellow parishioners in a journey through Lent where feet away from someone infected with the we will practice Lectio Divina with one of the Sunday readings. Each week we will also virus to not become infected, something that go a little deeper into an aspect of contemplative prayer. Join us beginning 2/29. is impossible to do when flying. Here is the really tricky part. You don’t know who is BOTH THE MINI-RETREAT AND THE SATURDAY PRACTICES ARE OFFERED BY NEWMAN infected and we do not know what the R0 or PARISHIONER JON HENZ, CERTIFIED SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR IN TRAINING Rho is of this virus. Stay with me. Rho is a measure of the infectivity of the virus which means how many people will an infected Why God? person infect. Right now, they are estimating MONDAY 3/2 - 7:00 TO 8:30 PM AND TUESDAY 3/3 - 1:00 TO 2:30 PM a Rho of 1.5-3.5 people which is similar to influenza (which makes sense). That means How does our human understanding point to the existence of God? Can St. there is the potential for a large pandemic Thomas Aquinas help us? Can Bart Ehrman? What does God ask of us? To be our (world-wide epidemic), but with appropriate God, and us to be his people, in Covenant. social distancing (meaning not letting infected people into the country), the likelihood of a major epidmeic is quite small. Remember, Why Jesus Christ, for Me? in 1918 no one knew what a virus was, nor MONDAY 3/16 - 7:00 TO 8:30 PM AND TUESDAY 3/17 - 1:00 TO 2:30 PM how they were spread. We are much better We have seen him and touched him with our own hands. He proclaims the prepared a century later. Kingdom of Heaven, and invites us to enter. He empties himself through death, that 3. What can people do to remain safe? If you we may enjoy the fullness of life. have not gotten a flu shot, get one. We are having a late flu season in NC with cases peaking now, so handwashing and covering Why the Trinity, to Me? your mouth when you cough are common MONDAY 3/30 - 7:00 TO 8:30 PM AND TUESDAY 3/31 - 1:00 TO 2:30 PM sense approaches. Don’t come to church if you are sick. If you are concerned about Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit into us. The Father, Son and Spirit whirl in the respiratory viruses don’t receive the Precious Divine Dance, and have invited us to join. Thus we can live in love and community, Blood. Remain hopeful. God bless. overcoming conflict and division.
