  • Icons of Shasta, Buddha and Ayyappa: Paradigms of Paradoxical Identifications and Sectarian Associations
Icons of Shasta, Buddha and Ayyappa: Paradigms of Paradoxical Identifications and Sectarian Associations Ajit Kumar1 1. Department of Archaeology, University of Kerala, Kariavattom Campus, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – 695581, India (Email: [email protected]) Received: 18 August 2019; Revised: 28 September 2019; Accepted: 25 October 2019 Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 7 (2019): 233-251 Abstract: Icons of Shasta, Ayyappa and Buddha are found from ancient Tamilakam (Kerala and Tamil Nadu) in large numbers. Religious biases, beliefs, and ignorance of iconography have often resulted in the paradoxical identification and divergent sectarian association of these divinities and their icons. This paper attempts a reappraisal of images of Shasta, Buddha and Ayyappa with a view to dissect and present their individualistic iconographic temperaments. Keywords: Shasta, Ayyappa, Buddha, Icons, Mural Paintings, Sabarimala Temple, Kerala Introduction Shasta etymologically means ‘a ruler or guardian of a country or land.’ Shasta, as a deity, is not found referred to in any early Sanskrit texts (Rao 1914: 485). He was a minor deity in Tamilakam and finds mention in Devaram hymns dating to 6th-7th CE (Sarkar 1978: 109). Seated idols of Shasta, without consorts and elephant dating to as early as the 8th -9th century CE, are found from the premises of a few temples in Kerala (Sarkar: 108-111). Later, texts like Sri Bhagavatam, Amsumadhbhedagama, and Suprabhedagama cites Shasta as Hariharaputra, a progeny of Shiva and Vishnu. Buddha idols contemporaneous to Shasta idols found from Kerala are seated in Padmasana and Dhyana mudra. Shasta and Buddha idols have no iconographic or stylistic similarity with each other though Amarakosha assigns the name Shasta to Buddha as a synonym (Kumar 2019a: 51-58).

Apart from the fact that it is the first systematic attempt as far as Kerala is concerned, its particular value lay in presenting a record of these rapidly vanishing cultural heritage. The Census report on fairs and festivals consists of two publications, Part VII B (i), Fairs and Festivals of Kerala containing the descriptive portion and Part VII B (ii), Fairs and Festivals of Kerala-Statements giving the tables relating to the fairs and festivals. The first part has already been published in 1966. It is the second part that is presented in this book. This publication is entirely a compilation of the statements furnished by various agencies like the Departments of Health Services, Police, Local Bodies, Revenue and the Devaswom Boards of Travancore and Cochin. This is something like a directory of fairs and festivals in the State arranged according to di'>tricts and taluks, which might excite the curiosity of the scholars who are interested in investigating the religiou, centres and festivals.

Visualizing Yakshi in the Religious History of Kerala Sandhya M. Unnikrishnan1 1. Department of History, NSS College Manjeri, Malappuram, Kerala, India (Email: [email protected]) Received: 30 October 2017; Revised: 24 November 2017; Accepted: 18 December 2017 Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 5 (2017): 757‐777 Abstract: Yakshi is a female goddess associated with the fertility of earth, love and beauty. She probably originated with the early Dravidians but have subsequently been absorbed in to the imagery of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. She has been worshipped since pre historic times in Indian. The roles and functions of this deity went through dramatic changes over period of time. The cult is closely associated with the primitive mode of worship even before the development of philosophy and theological doctrines in the Hindu fold. This paper intends to analyse the development of Yakshi cult in Kerala and its prevalence in Kerala society. The cult points of this deity are placed along the land routes of trade leading from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu into Kerala. A detailed survey of the midlands and low lands of Kerala testifies that the cult points were located along the water highways and interior land routes starting from the Western Ghats to Arabian Sea. The cult is closely interlinked with the Gramadevatha concept and with folk deities. Keywords: Yakshi, Fertility, Cult Points, Jainism, Gramadevatha, Folk Deities, Kavu Introduction The word Yaksha, literally means somebody shining, may allude to human beings shining wealth and fame or superhuman beings shining with virtues.
