Documentary today influences and structures the way we think about and envision current events and history. The proliferation of documentary, of course, stems in part from its importance to television as specials, docudramas, and public broadcasting endeavors such as Ken Burns' The Civil War (1989). Also, docu mentary films such as Michael Moore's Roger andMe (1989) achieve critical and commercial success. Yet, while documentary for information and entertainment grows in popularity and authority, its relation to film as an art and to culture studies remains generally misunderstood and neglected. Thus, documentary requires further study to explain its place in our culture. 0026-3079/99/4003-147$2.00/0 American Studies, 40:3 (Fall 1999): 147-155 147 148 Sam Girgus Besides the cost efficiency of documentary as compared to commercial films, the power and popularity of documentary also derive from the conventional belief in its special relationship to reality. In her important new book, Document ing Ourselves: Film, Video, and Culture, Sharon R. Sherman uses a familiar but descriptive label to identify this idea of documentary realism as a "'slice of life'" (10). For many, documentary provides a visual and audial piece of actual experience, rendering that experience with an immediacy to reality that obviates the mediation of written texts and artistic forms. -

Though the printed word is essential in learning, educators have been taking notice of the new visual and oratory stimuli and incorporated them into classroom teaching. The purpose of this idea packet is to further introduce teacher colleagues to this methodology and share a compilation of films which may be easily implemented in secondary social studies instruction. Though this project focuses in grades 6-12 social studies we believe that media should be infused into all K-12 subject areas, from language arts, math, and foreign languages, to science, the arts, physical education, and more. In this day and age, students have become accustomed to acquiring knowledge through mediums such as television and movies. Though books and text are essential in learning, teachers should take notice of the new visual stimuli. Films are familiar in the everyday lives of students. -

GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything. -
Time Travel, Film and Ecological Agency in 12 Monkeys EMMA
AJE: Australasian Journal of Ecocriticism and Cultural Ecology, Vol. 3, 2013/2014 ASLEC-ANZ Thinking Long/Thinking Ecologically: Time Travel, Film and Ecological Agency in 12 Monkeys EMMA KATRINA NICOLETTI University of Western Australia In order to ‘tell a good story’ cinematic narrative must necessarily expand, shrink and re- order time and space. Flashbacks, jump-cuts and montages juxtapose scenes that are temporally and spatially distant so as to construct narratives that are accessible and comprehensible to their audiences. These formal aspects of film seem to make it particularly well-suited to engaging Timothy Morton’s notion of ‘thinking big.’ In The Ecological Thought Morton argues that recognising the ecological interrelatedness of the human and nonhuman, particularly via culture, compels one to ‘think big’ (20): to understand that an action undertaken here has consequences over there (even way, way over there). Additionally, while ‘big’ emphasises ecological thinking in spatial terms, it also includes the temporal (Morton 135)—a notion perhaps better emphasised by ‘thinking long’: an event undertaken now or earlier will have ecological consequences later (even much, much later). Because film constructs its worlds and stories through the juxtaposition of temporally and spatially disconnected scenes, ‘thinking big/long’ seems to be embedded (albeit latently) in its very form. This discussion considers Terry Gilliam’s dystopian time travel film 12 Monkeys (1996) as an exemplary instance of the way film both stages and interrogates the concept of ‘thinking long.’ 12 Monkeys can be read as engaging with Morton’s philosophical musings on ecology and Gilles Deleuze’s philosophical ideas about time through its staging of the intersection between the deterioration of the subject and the environment, representations which arise through the film’s combination of a time travel plot, ecological catastrophe sub-plot, and use of postmodern filmic techniques. -

Later that year, following Ingrid Bergman Centennial .......................9 a staff strike, WNET’s newly created program BLACK JOURNAL (with Greaves as executive producer) was established “under black editorial control,” becoming the first nationally syndicated newsmagazine of its kind, and home base for a Best of Totally Awesome: new generation of filmmakers redefining documentary. 1968 also marked the production of the first Hollywood studio film Great Films of the 1980s .....................13 directed by an African American, Gordon Park’s THE LEARNING TREE. Shortly thereafter, actor/playwright/screenwriter/ novelist Bill Gunn directed the studio-backed STOP, which remains unreleased by Warner Bros. to this day. Gunn, rejected Bugs Bunny 75th Anniversary ...............14 by the industry that had courted him, then directed the independent classic GANJA AND HESS, ushering in a new type of horror film — which Ishmael Reed called “what might be the country’s most intellectual and sophisticated horror films.” Calendar ............................................15 This survey is comprised of key films produced between 1968 and 1986, when Spike Lee’s first feature, the independently Special Engagements ............12-14, 16 produced SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT, was released theatrically — and followed by a new era of studio filmmaking by black directors.
