28 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS AND COUNTING... 27 JOSEPH C. TREES POOL

Joseph C. Trees Pool was opened in 1962 on the upper campus of the University of Pittsburgh, with Ben Grady as the Panthers’ head men’s swimming coach. Forty-two years later, it remains one of the largest natatoriums in the nation. One of the last 55-yard pools built in the United States, Trees Pool is home to the ’ Swimming and Diving program. Numerous banners now hang on the far well, a reminder of the 28 Big East Conference titles won by the men’s and women’s teams since joining the league in the early 1980s.

Events held at Trees Pool — 1963 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Cham- pionships

— 1982 Women’s College Nationals AIAW Championships

— 15 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships (1983-1996, 1998)

— Numerous Eastern Collegiate Athletic Con- ference (ECAC) Championships, Long Course Eastern Zone Championships and 2005 Senior Olympic Games.

Trees Pool Facts When it was built in 1962, it was one of the fi rst pools with a high-dive (10-meter) tower, underwater windows, underwater sound system, and a heated deck and benches. The pool holds ap- proximately 750,000 gallons of water.

New Additions In 2002, a new state-of-the-art Dak- tronics scoreboard was installed on the pool’s balcony and was offi cially dedicat- ed to Ben Grady during the 2003 ECAC Championships held at Trees Pool. On October 24, 2003, a new Pan- thers’ Wall of Fame was unveiled by the team’s former All-Americans and award winners. The wall features the plaques of every Pittsburgh Swimming and Diving All-American as well as trophies for the Panthers’ many conference titles and meet championships.

Two Pools In One Along with the main pool, the facility houses a 25-yard, six-lane smaller pool, which was added in the summer of 1963, one year after the building was completed.

28 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS AND COUNTING... 29 PANTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY

anthers Swimming and Diving has always been about giving back to the community. Five years ago, the team contacted the local branch of Special Olympics to see if P there was something they could do to help. What they found was there were doz- ens of athletes out there who trained all year, but only were able to compete once at their offi cial Special Olympics meet. The Panthers decided to help and have since annually hosted a meet for Special Olym- pics in the spring. They’ve had a number of teams from the area including the JCC, Sunrise, AVS, the North Stars, the Pittsburgh Pros and Twin Rivers. In the past fi ve years, they’ve hosted a large number of incredibly gifted athletes in helping to promote their sport. Panthers Swimming and Diving and the community–always a winning combination!

30 200607 PITT SWIMMING AND DIVING PANTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY

s a part of its commitment to the Pittsburgh community, the Panthers’ swimming and diving coaching staff and team has held a starts-and-turns A clinic for local swimmers the past three seasons. The members of the Panthers’ swimming and diving teams have embraced the opportunity to work with and help younger athletes. The Pittsburgh coaches and swimmers demonstrated the proper ways to conduct starts and turns. The clinics were free and were held at the completion of home dual meets. “Giving back to the community is a part of what this program is about,” Head Coach Chuck Knoles said. “I think the Pittsburgh swimmers had as much fun as the clinic attendees.”
