NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report for Canada, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

Nielsen Music has also had an amazing, transformative year. Technological advancements and new partnerships have allowed us to provide robust, comprehensive data in more accessible, customizable and useful ways in 2017. Over the past year, we received a record number of requests for Nielsen Music research and insight reports. • Choir to Bring Joy to Adelaide Fringe
Media Release IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 2017 Choir makes Fringe debut If you could go back in time, what would you tell your teenage self? This is the question members of the ACH Group Sing for Joy choir will ask – and answer – at their first ever live Fringe performance in March. Aged up to 92 years, with an average age of 70, most choir members are more than twice the age of the average Fringe performer. They’ll draw on their collective wisdom when they sing their own song, ‘Don’t forget I wasn’t always this age’ inspired by Lukas Graham’s smash hit ‘Once I was seven years old’. As well as covering songs by Carole King and Leonard Cohen, the choir will sing hits from recent years including Cold Play’s ‘Fix You’, Rachel Platten’s ‘Fight Song’ and ‘Que Sera’ by Justice Crew. “You can always expect the unexpected with our choir performances,” choir leader Angela Sharp says. “We’re out to have fun, enjoy being together and show that age is just a number when it comes to sharing music.” Sing for Joy community choirs are based at Seaford, Glenelg, Payneham and Wynn Vale. The choirs are funded by The ACH Group Foundation for Older Australians and aim to help older people reconnect through singing and music. The choirs perform at public events throughout the year. Last year’ ‘flash mob’ event the Adelaide Airport, went viral on social media, reaching more than 80,000 people. (See the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpb8P00Vyso) Office for the Ageing Assistant Director Jeanette Walters has welcomed the inclusion of a group of older South Australians as Fringe performers.
