iii I. INTRODUCTION

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) initiated a program in 1986 to characterize ecosystem changes related to varying freshwater inflows to the Caloosahatchee Estuary, located on the southwest coast of Florida. Monthly benthic macroinfaunal samples were collected and analyzed in 1986-1989. However, the inflow conditions encountered during this three year period of record did not sufficiently incorporate the very high inflows that have historically occurred in this system. Therefore, 12 additional sampling surveys were conducted at the same locations in 1994- 1995. The surveys were conducted during a period of extremely high freshwater discharges, in order to aid in the determination of maximum inflow limits for the estuary.

Benthic macroinfauna from 192 samples were delivered to Mote Marine Laboratory (MML) for taxonomic analysis. This report provides the results of those analyses of aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates from four locations in the Caloosahatchee River. In addition to taxonomic identification, information for benthic community metrics and select indices are presented.

II. METHODS 11.1 Field Methods

Samples were collected by SFWMD biologists at four stations on the Caloosahatchee River. Bottom samples were collected with a Wildco® petite ponar grab which samples 2 an area of 0.02323 m • Five samples were collected at each Station for each monthly trip. All samples were from predominantly sand and shell substrate, in open water away from vegetated bottoms.

Samples were sieved in the field through a 500 micron screen, placed into quart jars with epsom salt, stained with rose bengal in Formalin®. The quantity of Formalin® added was sufficient to bring the fmal concentration to 10-15 % by volume. Four of the five samples were processed from each survey. Figure 1 shows a map of the southwest Florida coast, illustrating the location of the Caloosahatchee River.

11.2 Laboratory Methods 11.2.1 Sorting and Identification

At MML, invertebrate samples were first rough sorted beneath a stereozoom dissecting microscope. Fauna were removed from detritus and sorted to major taxonomic groups consisting of: annelids, molluscs, insects, and miscellaneous groups. After rough sorting, each group was identified to the lowest practical taxonomic level, which in most cases was the genus or species level. Representatives of the insect family Chironomidae were generally identified to the genus level. Insect larvae requiring clearing before identification were mounted on microscope slides with CMCpTK mounting media and allowed to clear before identification. Each data entry was also coded for life stage defmed as juvenile or larval (= 1), adult (= 2) and unknown or undefmed (= 0).

1 Figure 1. Map of southwest Florida illustrating the location of the Caloosahatchee River.

2 IT.2.2 Comments on Trophic Structure and Feeding Types

During data entry the mode of feeding was assigned to each taxonomic category. Categories consisted of the following types: 1 = deposit/surface, 2 = filter/deposit, 3 = filter/detritus or planktonic, 4 = omnivorous, 5 = omnivorous/filter, 6 = omnivorous/scavenger, 7 = carnivorous, 8 = scavenger, 9 = scavenger/carnivorous, 10 = herbivore, 11 = parasite. References utilized to obtain the codes for feeding types are presented in the Literature Cited section. The use of feeding group metrics is a result of river continuum theory (Vannote et al. 1980), which predicts that energy flow should change in a predictable fashion from small streams to large streams. The assumptions are made that the proportions of the invertebrate community represented by functional feeding groups is predictable and consistent for some measure of stream size. Changes in proportions of the various feeding types are presumed to be indicators of water quality problems (Lenat and Barbour 1994).

The approach has strong appeal and advantages of ease of sample collection and the possibility of assigning feeding categories in the field (Cummings and Wilzbach 1985). A major disadvantage of this type of analysis is the difficulty of assigning feeding categories (Resh and Jackson 1993). The feeding modes of many invertebrates is poorly known or assigned by presumption based on mouth part structures. Many groups such as the Chironomidae cannot be identified to species level and include predators, filter feeders, collector-gathers, shredders, and grazers. Many taxa are flexible in their feeding strategies and there may be significant changes in diet between-stream and between-seasons (Chapman and Demory 1963, Kawecka 1977). Even species within genera may have completely different diets (Shapas and Hilsenhoff 1976). Some taxa shift feeding strategies as they grow older. Some Plecoptera and Trichoptera switch from algal/detrital diets to diets in later larval stages (Anderson and Cummins 1979).

An additional problem is that feeding types are more poorly known for estuarine and marine benthic macroinvertebrates. There can also be many categories of benthic deposit feeders (selective, non-selective, surface and sub-surface, etc.). Trophic structure analysis has not been as extensively utilized for marine and estuarine species as it has for freshwater invertebrates.

IT.3 Indices of Community Structure

The following data analyses and community metrics are presented within this report: number of individuals per station, number of taxa per station, Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index (H', for three commonly used log bases) and Pielou's Index of equitability (1'). The method used to calculate the Shannon-Weaver Index and Pielou' s Index are presented below.

Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index was calculated as the Shannon-Weaver (also known as Shannon-Wiener) Index (Shannon and Weaver, 1972) using the formula:

3 s H' -- L (P)(log p) i=l

where s = total number of species for the sample and Pi = the proportion of total individuals for the ilh species. The index was calculated using various log bases (loglO' log2' In) to enable comparisons to other data sets. The use of a particular log base is immaterial but should be consistent between comparisons.

The use and biological meaning of the Shannon-Weaver Index has been strongly criticized by several authors (Hurlbert, 1971; Goodman, 1975; Patten, 1968; Washington, 1984). An increase or decrease in H' does not necessarily indicate an improvement or decline in the quality of a benthic community. In addition both high and low diversity values can be found in "natural" undisturbed systems. Environmental impact assessments must consider the natural state of the community under consideration. Caution should be used when interpreting values of H'as related to impact assessments.

Pielou's Index of Equitability, or evenness of distribution of fauna among species was calculated by Pielou's conventional method (Pielou, 1975). Values for the index range from 0-1, with a value of 1 being the maximum possible evenness of distribution in the community. The computational formula is:

where e = 2.30, H' = value for Shannon-Wiener Index, and S = total number of species for a sample.

ID. RESULTS

A total of 219 taxa were identified from 26,269 organisms obtained from the 192 samples. Table 1 provides a summary of the descriptive community parameters for each Station and sampling period. There was a wide range of values for these parameters. The number of taxa recovered from a Station ranged from 4 (Station 2, October 1995) to 80 (Station 6, January 1995). The number of taxa recovered increased from upstream to downstream stations. A total of 42 taxa were recovered from Station 2, 50 from Station 4, 90 from Station 5 and 183 from Station 6, the most estuarine of the four sites.

Annelids were the most diverse faunal group representing 35 % of the total taxa (76 taxa), primarily polychaetes. The molluscan taxa (26% of total) included 29 gastropod taxa and 29 bivalve taxa. There were 48 (22%) crustacean taxa and 12 (6%) insect taxa. Echinoderms were represented by 10 taxa (5%), consisting mostly entirely of brittlestar species. The remaining 15 taxa included three fish and taxa from less abundant invertebrate phyla such as Nemertea, Sipuncula, Brachiopoda and Hemichordata.

6 Table 2 presents a list of taxa that collectively comprised 90% of the total abundance for all samples combined. The list consists of 40 taxa, with three of those; the amphipod Cerapus tubularis, the cumacean Cyclaspis varians, and tubificid oligochaetes comprising 38 % of the fauna. Cerapus and Cyclaspis were most abundant at Stations 5 and 6 while the oligochaetes were most abundant at Stations 2, 6 and 5.

Faunal abundance showed strong seasonal variation. The number of individuals collected at a Station ranged from 7 (Station 4, October 1995) to 3,247 (Station 6, September 1995). Station 4 exhibited the overall IQwest abundance with an average of 135 organisms collected per sampling. Station 5 followed with an average of 242 organisms per event, Station 2 had an average of 404 organisms and Station 6 an average of 2,189 organisms collected per sampling event. A graphic representation of number of taxa and abundance for each sampling event is presented as Figure 2.

A phylogenetic list of abundance for Stations 2 and 4 for each date of collection is presented as Appendix Table 1. Data for Stations 5 and 6 are presented in Appendix Table 2. Appendix Table 3 presents a ranked list (by abundance) of taxa for each date and sample, as well as a code for life stage and feeding type. Tables 3 through 6 present the number of percentage taxa contributed by major faunal groups for each station and sampling event. Tables 7 through 10 illustrates the distribution of individuals among faunal groups. For both taxa and individuals there was considerable seasonal variation in the composition.

Values for the Shannon-Weaver diversity index (using log base 2) ranged from 0.70 (Station 5, September 1995) to 4.57 (Station 6, June 1995). Overall for all dates diversity values increased from upstream to downstream. For Stations 2, 4 and 5 diversity was generally lower in 1995 than 1994 (for comparable months of October, November and December).

Values for evenness of distribution of organisms among taxa (pielou's index) are presented in Table 1. The index values ranged from 0.19 (Station 5, September 1995), representing strong dominance, to 0.96 (Station 4, October 1994) representing a very even distribution. For all sampling events combined there was relatively little difference in equitability values between Stations. Figure 3 graphically illustrates the seasonal values of diversity and equitability for all four Stations.

18 IV. SUMMARY

Benthic macroinfauna were identified and enumerated from 192 samples, representing four locations in the Caloosahatchee River, on behalf of the South Florida Water Management District. The samples were collected as part of a program to initiated in 1986 to characterize ecosystem changes related to varying freshwater inflows to the Caloosahatchee Estuary. Monthly benthic macroinfaunal samples were collected and analyzed in 1986-1989. The contents of this report represent an additional 12 sampling surveys conducted at the same locations in 1994-1995. The surveys were conducted during a period of extremely high freshwater discharges, in order to aid in the determination of maximum inflow limits for the estuary.

2 Samples were collected with a Wildco® petite ponar grab which samples an area of 0.02323 m • The sample Stations were predominantly sand and shell substrate, in open water away from vegetated bottoms.

A total of 219 taxa representing numerous invertebrate phyla were identified from 26,269 organisms. There was a wide range in species diversity and abundance spatially and seasonally.

Data summaries and magnetic copies of all data were provided to SFWMD.
