Tibshelf News Edition 30 – Spring 2018 TIBSHELF NEWS As we are putting our Newsletter together - the snow is on the ground and the temperatures are minus 5 degrees—it can only get better—can’t it?? There’s lots to look forward to in 2018 and lots of good outcomes from 2017—so lets welcome those first warm days of springtime—which we hope you are beginning to enjoy by the time you are reading this. 2017 saw an unbelievable response to our appeal for sponsorship of the lamppost poppies. You may remember that we offered sponsorship at a minimum of £3.00 per poppy—we received £432 from our lovely community. The following pages list all those who made donations - and we thank you! As 2018 commemorates the centenary of the ending of 1914-1918 World War 1, we have already purchased more poppies to replace the ones which were weather damaged last year In this Edition and will be offering the same opportunity for Getting Involved members of the community to sponsor them Page 12 on the lampposts in November prior to Sponsor a Hanging Basket Remembrance Day. This year we are arranging for a structural survey on the war memorial as we have some concerns about its stability. Subject to the report we will arrange for any necessary works to be carried out in order to re- stabilise it. We will also be commissioning a clean and re lettering. We are also planning to co-operate with the Royal British Legion, the Church and other local organisations to respectfully mark this milestone in our history. 5 Do you want the Bad news or the Good News?? The bad news was that in 2017 we had a terrible spate of vandalism which saw nearly all the bus shelters in the village damaged. The good news is, after much research—and a lot of expense!! - we have now turned it around and all our bus shelters have been fully refurbished with, what we hope proves to be, vandal proofed materials. The refurbished Bus Shelters are on Doe Hill Lane, one opposite the school and one opposite Spa Croft; one on Newton Road at the junction with St Thomas Close—(we’ve just had a seat fitted in there as well), one on Mansfield Road, one on High Street and the most recent one on Chesterfield Road. We’re sure that you will appreciate that this has come at a high cost - around £9000 in total. When vandals damage public assets like this, it is the hard working council tax payers who ultimately pay for it. The Parish Council, as guardians of the public purse for the community of Tibshelf, have to make difficult decisions about where they direct those resources and we hope that you will agree that this programme of refurbishment has been worthwhile and contributes to improving the village street scene. 6 More Good News !! Neighbourhood Planning You may remember that, in our Summer issue 2017, we shared with you the Parish Council’s proposal to develop a Neighbourhood Plan—but we couldn’t do it alone. We were excited to receive many expressions of interest from the community about getting involved in developing a workable vision for the future of our village. As a result of this the Parish Council have engaged an expert in this field, to help and support both us and the community in moving forward. Further exciting news is that we have been successful in accessing external funding to help us along the way. We held a meeting with all interested parties in mid March and, out of this, we intend to spread the word wider throughout the community, making sure that there is an opportunity for everyone who is interested to have a voice and influence the future of Tibshelf. TIBSHELF Please keep your eyes peeled for news on the notice boards, in future Newsletters and flyers, and on our website www.tibshelfparishcouncil.gov.uk we will be looking for you to get involved!! 7 Christmas 2017 saw the Parish Council in working on their programme for the Tibshelf Christmas displays throughout the summer and autumn months. 2017 We listened to the comments from our community, many of whom wanted to see the Christmas display expanded further down the High Street. We looked at several ideas, including Christmas decorative lighting, but we considered that the most effective would be to continue with the Christmas tree theme using the lampposts. This was also the most cost effective option as, although there were some considerable costs up front in the first year, the ongoing costs were much less than other options considered. Special thanks go to Bradford Festival Lights who have been supplying our Christmas decorations for many years, P & D Specialist Services who did a great job, advising and working closely with us, doing all the electrical and installation work on the lampposts, Robert Cook for erecting and lighting the large Christmas tree, all the trees on the commercial properties and the decorations on the Village Hall and Dean and Ashley, our Parish Rangers, who look after all the stock year round and help to get all the decorations in to place. Our gratitude to Bob Ganley, Keith Spencer and Steve Ansell who look after, erect and maintain the beautiful display on the tower of St John the Baptist Church. Santa’s visit was a resounding success with lots of excited Tibshelf children turning up to see him in his beautiful grotto (which again was magically designed and erected by Councillor Wendy Vardy) Special thanks to Anthony of Atmosphere who entertained everyone whilst they waited to see Santa and our immense gratitude to Tom Deakin and family who braved the cold with their donkeys , setting a festive scene outside the grotto. Santa has also asked us to thank Cliff Whitehead and Emily Tunnicliffe - he says he couldn’t have done it without them! 8 Have you got your 2018 diary? Neighbourhood Planning—various opportunities to get involved—look out for more details The Poppy Proms—date to be arranged—an evening of entertainment led by Hucknall and Linby Community Brass Band in commemoration of the centenary of the end of WW1 Tibshelf Carnival—organised by Tibshelf Community Association— Saturday 21st July 2018 Tibshelf Lamppost Poppies—25th October— 11th November Tibshelf Fireworks—3rd November 2018 Tibshelf Remembers—Sunday 11th November 2018 Tibshelf’s Memory Christmas Tree—from 1st December (look out for more details) Christmas in Tibshelf—visit Santa Friday 7th December Christmas Craft Fayre—Saturday 17th November 2018 Parish Carol Concert—St Johns Church, Tibshelf—Monday 17th December 2018 9 ….Yes—we want to make it happen !! For many months we have been working with a number of different interested parties to try and bring a vision to reality. It was almost 3 years ago when this community was devastated by the untimely closure of Exercise4All, and we have been questioned on many occasions about whether we could revive the facility. We’ve taken many routes to try and come up with a solution and, after much heart searching, have had to discard most of them.

Cliff was the a stalwart of the British Legion, and in fact played the Last Post at the annual Clay Cross Remembrance Service for many years, and Ron was on the committee of the Clay Cross Miner’s Welfare. Continuing on the sombre note, it’s sad to see another bank closing down in the town - when Lloyds closes its doors this year it will mean that Councillor Gerry Morley with Ron Butler. no banks remain, where once there were three or four. I know traders feel that the loss of the banks means that fewer people actually come to town and use their shops. On a more positive side, later this year we can expect an Aldi store to open off the A61 near the Tesco petrol station roundabout, and then the first of nearly 900 new homes will be built on the site of the former Biwater site, bringing more shoppers into the community. The new Hub community venue is already proving a success, and I have had the pleasure to enjoy a coffee at the new Poppy’s New admin assistant Michelle Cowin.

RESOLVED that the Council supports the work of the Group and would write to the school requesting that they refrain from using and signposting the cemetery as a pick-up point for parents. A member of the public – referred to a perceived lack of support for the Neighbourhood Plan, little communication to the village. It was further suggested that the recent Parish Action Plan in the Parish Council Newsletter had cause confusion with the Neighbourhood Plan. He urged the Parish Council to support the Neighbourhood Plan. Cllr Coupe added that the notes from the Plan meetings were always submitted to the Council for consideration.

    Edition 21– Autumn 2014 TIBSHELF NEWS 1 World War 1 Centenary 1914-2014 In recognition of the Centenary of the beginning of the First World War the Parish Council are purchasing and erecting a flagpole which will bear a Centenary Flag. The flagpole is to be erected next to the Christmas Tree/Flower planter on the green in front of the District Council Flats on High Street and will be in place before Remembrance Day. tibshelf’s great war Joff Whaites’s short documentary on Tibshelf's Great War, which tells the stories of some of the men of Tibshelf who took part in the conflict, is progressing well. Julie Lovatt has been the primary contact for information and contributions have come in from far and wide. So far an interview with a Notts and Derbys Regimental Historian has added some background on the Sherwood Foresters and it is hoped to record interviews with some subject matter experts to support the military aspect of the story. The film will be illustrated with some stock footage purchased from the Imperial War Museum and photographs and letters from the time supplied by local families. Some new material has been shot around the village. He also asked about the provision of dog bins in the parish. The Chair informed the resident that the issue of improving communication was being dealt with as a priority. She also explained that there were 14 dog bins provided throughout the parish and that the parish council provided dog bags free of charge. Police: The police were not present County Council: Cllr.
