Outgoing board member Ted Schoenborn was celebrated after 18 years of service to BPRD’s board. Thank you, Ted! For the 2021-22 year, Ariel Méndez will serve as chair of the board and Deb Schoen will be vice chair. The legislative liaison will be work for play Nathan Hovekamp. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion The district is nearing the home stretch on a year-long project to develop a roadmap for how it can improve in being a more diverse, equitable and inclusive organization. The project goals are to assess strengths, opportunity for improvement and to develop actions to build trust with members of the community who have been historically underrepresented and underserved. BPRD hired Talitha Consults to lead the project, which includes the survey, an organizational assessment and action plan. The district will share the survey results, organizational assessment and action plan by late 2021, and begin implementing the actions immediately following.     To: City of Bend Citywide Transportation Advisory Committee Attn: Nick Arnis, Susanna Julber and Eric King From: Steve Porter, Resident of Bend Date: April 12, 2018 Re: Public Comments, City of Bend Citywide Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting Dear Bend Citywide Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC): Thank you for your work on the important and complicated matter of improving transportation in Bend and planning how Bend’s future transportation needs will be met. As a resident, I am pleased to see such energetic involvement addressing these issues from so many people in our community. I observed your April 10 meeting and, following reflection of several matters brought up during that gathering, I thought I would humbly submit a handful of comments for your consideration. The following may be considered my public comments in advance of your upcoming third meeting. First, during the April 10 meeting’s discussion, the importance of “benchmarking” Bend’s transportation development, funding models and other related considerations against those of other cities was raised. This point makes good sense to me and, in the spirit of contributing to the formation of knowledge on this front, I would like to suggest two resources. • The first is a book entitled Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design, by Charles Montgomery. The book, copies of which are available via the Deschutes Public Library system, provides a sampling of urban planning, transportation design and community development models that have, and have not, worked well in cities around the world. The book elaborates on issues at the nexus of transportation, economics, social well-being and sustainable growth, and is a worthy guidebook for those charged with the CTAC’s mission, particularly as a benchmarking reference.

    ART ASSIGNMENT OPEN CALL MARK BRADFORD In conjunction with the exhibition Mark Bradford: End Papers, the Modern’s education department is pleased to announce an OPEN CALL for high school and middle school student responses to two key works in the show, Medusa, 2020, and Kingdom Day, 2010. It is highly recommended that each student visits the Modern’s galleries to view the selected works in person. The exhibition is on view through January 10, 2021. This packet is a supplement to the gallery experience and offers background information on the artist and works, as well as ideas to consider and activities to complete for the open call. Admission to the Modern is free for participating students. OPEN CALL submission guidelines can be found at the end of this packet. Mark Bradford (b. 1961 in Los Angeles; lives and works in Los Angeles) is a contemporary artist best known for his large-scale abstract paintings created out of paper. Characterized by its layered formal, material, and conceptual complexity, Bradford’s work explores social and political structures that objectify marginalized communities and the bodies of vulnerable populations. Just as essential to Bradford’s work is a social engagement practice through which he reframes objectifying societal structures by bringing contemporary art and ideas into communities with limited access to museums and cultural institutions. Bradford grew up in his mother’s beauty salon, eventually becoming a hairdresser himself, and was quite familiar with the small papers used to protect hair from overheating during the process for permanent waves. Incorporating them into his art was catalytic for Bradford, merging his abstract painting with materials from his life.

The researcher was particularly interested in integrating more non metallic materials that are not traditional to the production of metal art in the decoration, finishing and the protective coating of metal art works. Basic hand forming techniques including raising, chasing and repoussé, piercing and soldering were employed in the execution of the works. Other techniques such as painting, dyeing and macramé were also used. Non metallic media that were used in the production of the works included leather, nail polish, acrylic paint, epoxy, formica glue, graphite, eye pencil, lagging, foam, wood, shoe polish, shoe lace, eggshell paper, spray paint, cotton cords and correction fluid.
