Prior to moving here, our friends asked us about hurricanes. I confidently answered that because of the Georgia Bight and the Gulf Stream, hurricanes weren’t really a problem in Savannah. Along came Tropical Storm Hermine in September and Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 with the loss of thousands of trees, and simply unbelievable amounts of debris that took months to remove (see photo at right for just a small portion of the debris). Yes, Savannah can get hurricanes. We have been lucky the last couple of years, but we need to be prepared. I encourage you to attend TLA’s Hurricane Town Hall on June 16, at 7 p.m., in Palmetto’s Ballroom. A note to anyone who bought a generator with the thought of riding out a hurricane. Not all of Utility, Inc.’s lift stations have generators. If the power goes out, sewage may become an adventure for those who stay. The beginning of summer brings another event which I wish I did not have to discuss. Summer is a time when vandalism historically increases. With respect to our road signs this year, there have been 58 cases of vandalism. Missing or damaged road signs have an impact on first responders’ ability to respond to a call. It is a safety concern. Vandalism is a violation of our Rules, and it is criminal offense under Georgia law. We will treat vandalism as a criminal matter and prosecute all offenders. If you see acts of vandalism, please contact Security. Finally, June begins the summer we earned by our social distancing, by wearing masks, and by getting our vaccinations. I hope everyone takes advantage of doing all the things we took for granted and rediscovers why we think The Landings and Savannah are the best places to call home.

Interestingly, as I was looking through past articles, I discovered a few patterns. If you have lived in The Landings for 10 years or more, you probably have a good idea about some of the issues we face today that we faced 10-to-40 years ago.

June 1981: “Another reminder, please notify the Security Gate in advance of visitors, service people, deliveries, etc. that you are expecting.” Officers continue to face the same challenge 40 years later, and their ability to make judgment calls that err on the side of customer service versus more stringent security measures is dwindling. Please preauthorize your guests and vendors. Not only will it decrease the wait time for guests and vendors *Part 1 Crimes – Murder and nonnegligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated entering our community, but it also will prevent your guest from being assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft, and arson delayed or ultimately denied entry if we cannot reach you. In 1981, residents had to call in their guests. Now, you have many options. **Burglaries & Thefts are included in Part 1 Crimes but also contain incidents not reported to Chatham County Police Department (CCPD). Instead of calling, you can preauthorize your expected arrivals via the online portal (www.GateAccess.net) or ABDi’s smartphone app. Although you still can reach the Main Gate, please be aware that the Main Gate Volunteers have not assisted with calls since COVID-19 began last year. Despite this significant decrease in staffing, we have not increased staffing levels or hours.

June 1981: “Speeding continues to be one of our major security problems. Habitual violators of our speed limit (25 m.p.h.) will see their names published in future newsletters.” Instead of education through humiliation, we now have fines and can educate through the pocketbook. Speed limits are enforced by speed detection devices by The Landings Association’s Security Officers as well as Law Enforcement Officers. The speed limit within our community is 30 MPH unless otherwise posted.

July 1991: “Please review the golf cart rules of operation as published in the last two issues of The Landings Journal. I have observed children sitting behind the steering wheels of several carts in motion – remember *Violations issued are inclusive of Unlicensed Driver Violations. that licensed drivers only should be operating the carts.” Security Officers responded to your request and increased unlicensed golf cart operation warnings and citations issued in 2020 by 85%. As of April 30, we have already issued 18 warnings and citations. Let this serve as a public notice that as part of the Courtesy Safety Inspection (CSI) events offered this summer, we will be inspecting operators’ driver’s licenses. Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) has been invited to attend these events and is duly authorized to issue State citations for traffic violations, including unlicensed drivers.

August 1893: A hurricane known as the “Sea Island Storm” made landfall provide excellent advice to ensure you have a plan in place. Please make a just south of Savannah with winds of 120 mph and killed nearly 2,000 concerted effort to attend this meeting, especially if you have never been to people. one or never had to deal with these types of storms. Montgomery Crossroads, Savannah June 2021 • The Landings Journal • 23 Marinas Update cont’d from page 9 three inches from spike to spike across the back. No sponge (egg-bearing) crabs are allowed. Recreational crabbers may take no more than one bushel of crabs during any 24-hour period. No more than two bushels may be taken recreationally or possessed during a 24-hour period on a boat with more than one person aboard. The Marinas require that all traps be checked and cleared every 24 hours by the owner to ensure that there are no by-catch species that have entered the trap and that the crabs of “legal size” that have been caught are either removed or released. Trust me, the crabs inside of a trap do not encourage/invite other crabs to enter a trap. Staff also ensure that the traps are not high and dry during low tide. They are instructed to remove and release any species from the traps that are not being monitored by the owner. Please follow The Landings Association’s rules for fishing and crabbing at the Marinas to avoid removal of your traps. Landings Harbor Tiki Bar Project Marinas staff and members from the Marinas Committee recently removed the old, weathered Tiki Bar top. New bracing and corbels have been installed in preparation of the new bar top materials arrival from a local supplier. The bar top will be constructed of milled Garapa hardwood in its natural state. We anticipate that this dense lumber will tolerate the weather and climate the tiki bar is exposed to as well as survive the occasional cocktail mishap. Additionally, it will preserve this asset often used by all Landings residents. The renaming of the Tiki Bar was put to a vote during a recent meeting of the Skidaway Island Boat Club (SIBC). The winning results from the recent SIBC vote is Dockside Bar. SIBC is working with TLA’s Public Works in crafting and installing the new sign. The best way to protect yourself and your family from becoming infected with mosquito-borne illnesses is to make sure your home is not a breeding ground for them. Following are a few tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help ensure mosquitos stay away. Tips to Protect Your Home: • Eliminate standing water in and around your home - Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out items that hold water, such as tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots, or trash containers. Check inside and outside your home. Be certain to tightly cover water storage containers (buckets, cisterns, and rain barrels) so that mosquitos cannot get inside to lay eggs. For containers without lids, use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. • Use screens on windows and doors - Screens and doors keep mosquitos out of your house. Repair holes in screens immediately. Once you have your home front secure, turn your attention to yourself. Face it; there are times for both work and play that you will be exposed to mosquitos. You don’t have to go it alone. Tips to Protect Yourself: • Use an EPA-registered insect repellent with Deet, Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and Icaridin), IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or para-methane-diol (PMD). All EPA-registered insect repellents are evaluated to make sure they are safe and effective. • Wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants. Treat clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents) with permethrin, or purchase permethrin-treated clothing and gear. With a little caution and preplanning, you can protect yourself from mosquitos. For more information about mosquito protection and the latest on the Zika Virus, visit www.cdc.gov/zika. For more information on West Nile, visit www.cdc.gov/westnile. If you see an increase in mosquitoes near your home, please phone Chatham County’s Mosquito Control Division (912-790-2540) to request spray service in your area.

You will still be subscribed, but you will need to access a new website to update your account if you’d like to make changes. I mention this now to let you know what’s coming, and we will provide detailed instructions prior to launch. Some recent road closures have been necessary due to our 2021 road resurfacing project. As I write this, that project is on schedule, on budget, and almost halfway complete. We have been more stringent this year in shutting down areas being paved, and for longer periods, to allow for proper application. I sincerely appreciate your patience as we upgrade our roadways.
