YOUR Community hospice since 1995  A non-profit 501(c)3 You are OUR community, we are YOUR Hospice! Crater Community Hospice’s memory garden in the spring of 2020. Even in the midst of a Pandemic, YOU were there!

2020 was quite a year! We faced a pandemic and shortages of personal protective supplies, hand sanitizer, and wipes. Amid all of this, our community stepped up. Masks were made, hand sanitizer by the gallon, wipes by the case, and paper bags from local grocery stores in the hundreds (to store used personal protective equipment) were donated. Without YOU, we could never have achieved so much. YOU helped keep our mission to educate the community on serious illness and end of life concerns and provide families and patients with quality care and supportive services going. With most of our fundraising events cancelled, we pulled off pre-COVID a chocolate factory tour complete with a make your own chocolate pizza and a bunny painting class, and post-COVID a motorcycle poker run in August cut short by a monsoon of rain and held a socially distanced and masked paint party. Through YOUR kindness in 2020, we were able to persevere. We are part of a great community and have the greatest supporters we could ask for. YOU support us with not only your time, talent and treasure, but with your prayers, too! You are a part of our work. Your support travels with each Nurse, Nurse Aide, Chaplain, Social Worker, and Bereavement Counselor which allowed us to serve those facing end of life and their families. Even in a pandemic, there is hope…and that hope is YOU! We are so grateful for YOU! Looking forward to 2021!

For over twenty-five years, Crater Community Hospice has provided care to over 8,000 families from Ashland to the North Carolina line and continues to be the only non-profit hospice located in the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties. The goals of Crater Community Hospice are to make hospice care available to terminally ill persons, their families and those affected by death and dying in our community; to advocate effectively for patient comfort, dignity, and choice, and to be recognized as a leading resource in clinical, ethical, and spiritual issues of dying. Crater Community Hospice provides physical, spiritual, emotional and psycho-social care to patients and families to maintain the highest quality of life possible. Patients receive symptom management, scheduled and emergency visits by health professionals, and personal care such as bathing, dressing and feeding. Health supplies, medications, and durable health equipment are provided. The whole family is supported by a team of dedicated health professionals available on call, 24-hours, 7-days a week. Support is provided to those coping with issues of grief and loss for up to one year following loss. The public and other healthcare professionals are educated about advance directives, Medicare hospice benefits, end-of-life care issues, caregiving and grief. Specialized volunteer training enhances patient care in homes and long term care facilities while building stronger and more engaged communities. And then there is Jake… Jake is Crater Community Hospice’s Chief Happiness Officer. He joined us as a puppy and is ready to celebrate his third birthday in April.

He loves playing with the team, greeting thrift shop customers on his break, and treats! For the staff and customers he is a bit of respite on a tough day and an Ambassador for Crater Community Hospice.

A Painting for Christmas fundraiser, a tour and chocolate pizza making at Taylor Made Chocolates. Painting a Bunny Masterpiece and Board Member Rita Baldwin and her granddaughter decorate the lobby tree.
