As contemporary music critic and composer, Francesco D’Arcais, wrote: Maybe for the first time, at least in quite a while, learned people, the audience and the press shared the same opinion on an opera. [Composers] called upon to choose the works to be staged, among those presented for the Sonzogno [opera] competition, immediately picked Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana as one of the best; the audience awarded this composer triumphal honours, and the press 1 unanimously praised it to the heavens. D’Arcais acknowledged Mascagni’smeritsbut, inthesamearticle, alsourgedcaution in too enthusiastically festooning the work with critical laurels: the dangers of excessive adulation had already become alarmingly apparent in numerous ill-starred precedents. In the two decades prior to its premiere, several other Italian composers similarly attained outstanding critical and popular success with a single work, but were later unable to emulate their earlier achievements. Among these composers were Filippo Marchetti (Ruy Blas, 1869), Stefano Gobatti (IGoti, 1873), Arrigo Boito (with the revised version of Mefistofele, 1875), Amilcare Ponchielli (La Gioconda, 1876) and Giovanni Bottesini (Ero e Leandro, 1879). Once again, and more than a decade after Bottesini’s one-hit wonder, D’Arcais found himself wondering whether in Mascagni ‘We [Italians] have finally [found] … the legitimate successor to [our] great composers, the person 2 who will perpetuate our musical glory?’ This hoary nationalist interrogative returned in 1890 like an old-fashioned curse. -

4 Protecting the Natural and Cultural Values of the Wadden Sea Coast in the Anthropocene
4 Protecting the natural and cultural values of the Wadden Sea coast in the Anthropocene An urgent call for integration Jens Enemark, Ludwig Fischer and Karsten Reise Abstract A shallow sea and coastal plains constitute a natural entity on the Wadden Sea Coast. A highly dynamic history of natural processes and events as well as human intentions and interventions have shaped this unique region. Today, a divergent course has led to the separation of sea and land. This is based on a deep-rooted nature-culture divide in our mentality. However, this old dualism needs to be overcome, especially on a coast challenged by globalisations and a sea level rise of some metres. An approach that keeps nature protection (the sea), coastal protection (along the shore), and the protection of cultural values (in the landscape) separate from each other is bound to run aground. The natural and cultural sciences should join forces together with societies and policymakers in a transdisciplinary approach, developing new concepts for the protection of natural and cultural diversity and for coastal identity. Keywords: Wadden Sea, nature-culture divide, dualism, Anthropocene, transdisciplinary approach Introduction The last two to three generations have witnessed a fundamental change in the way we approach and interact with the Wadden Sea coast. In the 1960s, the Wadden Sea was under heavy environmental pressure, and land Egberts, Linde & Schroor, Meindert (eds.), Waddenland Outstanding: The History, Landscape and Cultural Heritage of the Wadden Sea Region. Sarti's Fra I Due Litiganti and Opera in Vienna
John Platoff Trinity College March 18 2019 Sarti’s Fra i due litiganti and Opera in Vienna NOTE: This is work in progress. Please do not cite or quote it outside the seminar without my permission. In June 1784, Giuseppe Sarti passed through Vienna on his way from Milan to St. Petersburg, where he would succeed Giovanni Paisiello as director of the imperial chapel for Catherine the Great. On June 2 Sarti attended a performance at the Burgtheater of his opera buffa Fra i due litiganti il terzo gode, which was well on its way to becoming one of the most highly successful operas of the late eighteenth century. At the order of Emperor Joseph II, Sarti received the proceeds of the evening’s performance, which amounted to the substantial sum of 490 florins.1 Fra i due litiganti, premiered at La Scala in Milan on September 14, 1782, had been an immediate success, and within a short time began receiving productions in other cities. It was performed in Venice under the title I pretendenti delusi; and it was the third opera produced in Vienna by the newly re-established opera buffa company there in the spring of 1783. By the time of Sarti’s visit to the Hapsburg capital a year later, Fra i due litiganti was the most popular opera in Vienna. It had already been performed twenty-eight times in its first season alone, a total unmatched by any other operatic work of the decade. Thus the Emperor’s awarding 1 Link, National Court Theatre, 42 and n. -

CUL Keller Archive Catalogue
HANS KELLER ARCHIVE: working copy A1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49 A1/1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49: independent work This section contains all Keller’s unpublished manuscripts dating from the 1940s, apart from those connected with his collaboration with Margaret Phillips (see A1/2 below). With the exception of one pocket diary from 1938, the Archive contains no material prior to his arrival in Britain at the end of that year. After his release from internment in 1941, Keller divided himself between musical and psychoanalytical studies. As a violinist, he gained the LRAM teacher’s diploma in April 1943, and was relatively active as an orchestral and chamber-music player. As a writer, however, his principal concern in the first half of the decade was not music, but psychoanalysis. Although the majority of the musical writings listed below are undated, those which are probably from this earlier period are all concerned with the psychology of music. Similarly, the short stories, poems and aphorisms show their author’s interest in psychology. Keller’s notes and reading-lists from this period indicate an exhaustive study of Freudian literature and, from his correspondence with Margaret Phillips, it appears that he did have thoughts of becoming a professional analyst. At he beginning of 1946, however, there was a decisive change in the focus of his work, when music began to replace psychology as his principal subject. It is possible that his first (accidental) hearing of Britten’s Peter Grimes played an important part in this change, and Britten’s music is the subject of several early articles. -
