We once again welcome visitors to the Community and Virginia Run residents who support the annual Turkey Trot event. This year is expected to be one of the best, as the weather is expected to be warmer than usual. I encourage each of you to support this year’s event, while getting some exercise before the football games begin and turkey is served. On behalf of the Board of Trustees we would like to wish you a safe Halloween and Happy Thanksgiving. And now for some very good news. The Board, with recommendations from the Asset Management Committee (AMC) and Sequoia Management Company, approved a budget that will not increase monthly fees from the current $63.00, yet maintains the quality of Community’s appearance and services provided. The original draft budget contained monthly fees of $65.00 but to maintain the current monthly fees, the Board decided to return approximately $2.00 per month per household to the homeowners, resulting in monthly fees of $63.00. During the negotiations with Williams/ Transco the Association received money for use of the Association’s easements and possible damage to our property. Since the Association has no additional expenses associated with the funds received, we have elected to return the unused portion of $30,000 to the homeowners. The AMC and Management Company have reviewed the expected income, projected expenses, and forwarded a balanced budget proposal with minor changes to the assessment structure – contributing slightly more to the general fees and slightly less to trash removal. The Board expects trash removal assessments to decrease or remain constant in 2014. We continue to hold the line on costs including management company fees, legal fees, common area and pool expenses, as well as general operation and maintenance costs. The Board approved the balanced budget unanimously. The Board also passed a series of motions that increased the monthly assessments to homeowners for the repairs and maintenance of common driveways, held steady the fees for Pleasant Hills access to the Virginia Run pool, and reduced contributions to the Capital Improvement, while holding steady on the Contingency Reserve account funding. The Board is proud of the Association’s continued financial health and wish to commend the AMC and Sequoia Management Company for their diligence in maintaining the costs associated with managing the Community; to the residents for their ongoing support of the Association fee structure, and our ability to minimize the impact of the recent housing challenges. We have had very few foreclosures in the Community and where we have had overdue accounts, our management team, Jan Fenton and Ann Wilkes have done a wonderful job of negotiating and collecting those overdue amounts. On October 9, 2013, the Virginia Department of Transportation and Sully District Supervisor sponsored a Public Hearing regarding the planned improvements to the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Braddock Roads. The Community was well represented by members of the Board of Trustees and residents of Virginia Run. Thanks to all the residents who attended, as we significantly outnumbered the residents from Loudoun County in attendance. Most of those in attendance were extremely disappointed with the forum of the public hearing. VDOT presented new materials during the meeting but unfortunately were only available on their website just hours before the meeting. No public speaking was permitted that would have allowed attendees to voice their favor or disfavor with the proposed plans. VDOT was to allow 10 days for comment, but through negotiations with our legislators and VDOT the date has been extended to October 30, 2013. That said, members of the Board and residents alike completed the comment cards, recorded messages to VDOT and Sully District Supervisor using the court and the newspaper reporters in attendance. We have all tried to do our part but this project continues down the path at a very rapid pace – and many of us believe it is in an effort to beat the final plans for Route 50, thereby allowing Loudoun County residents a permanent alternative to Route 50 when completed. The next event will be the Fairfax Board of Supervisor’s meeting, which the Board plans to attend to voice our concerns over the planning, development and implementation of the current roundabout. A Virginia Run resident has done an excellent job summarizing the challenges of roundabouts citing the State of New Jersey which has elected to remove most of their roundabouts constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s. VIRGINIA RUN 5 NOVEMBER 2013

PROTECT OUR WATER: ONLY RAIN IN THE DRAIN

My name is Mitchell McDonald and I am a Life Scout in Troop 893. My Eagle project is to educate the community and label my assigned area of 155 storm drains (of approximately 465) in Virginia Run with eye-catching “No Dumping” signs (like the image to the left). These signs are intended to dissuade people from non-point source pollution which is pollution in our water originating from many sources. Every time it rains, the water from storms pick up litter, motor oil, chemicals, and pet waste and dump it into our storm drains. Our drains lead to the Cub Run stream which runs into the Occoquan, to the Potomac, into the Chesapeake, and finally to the mighty Atlantic itself. As a community there are five things we can do to prevent this sort of pollution

• Don't let suds from washing your car go down the storm drain! Soap, oil, and car chemicals can all damage stream water quality.

• Scoop the poop. Help keep harmful bacteria out of our streams by disposing of pet waste in the trash can or toilet - it's the law.

• Fertilize in the fall, if at all. Reduce or eliminate fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide use on your lawn. The nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilizers create low-oxygen dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay each year. Pesticides and herbicides can disrupt aquatic ecosystems.

• Practice watershed-friendly yard care. Plant native plants, shrubs and trees; get a rain barrel, or install a rain garden to help protect streams.

• Prevent and report storm drain dumping. Dispose of household hazardous waste properly and recycle used motor oil at your local service station. If you see hazardous wastes like pesticides, paint, or motor oil being dumped in the storm drains, report it to Fairfax County at 703-691-2131, TTY 711.

When: Sunday, November 10th between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Rain date: Sunday, November 17th between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

What: In my assigned area, teams of 2 – 4 scouts/volunteers will drop off educational fliers and use adhesive to label all the storm drains with the signs (no spray paint here!).

Where: the western half of Virginia Run from Route 29 to Trillium House Lane, Meherrin Court, and Eagle Tavern Way

Who: volunteers welcome! If you’d like to volunteer or if you have any questions, please call me at 703-815-9980.

For more information see the Fairfax County, Northern Virginia Soil and Water District web site at: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/nvswcd/stormdrained.htm

VIRGINIA RUN 7 NOVEMBER 2013 25th Annual Virginia Run Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Presented By: Mitchell Eye Institute, John D. Mitchell, MD

The Virginia Run Turkey Trot is right around the corner! This year is a mile stone year as we get ready for the 25th Thanksgiving Day 5k run/2k walk. We hope that you and your family and friends will participate in the event and help us raise money for Life with Cancer. Last year we had over 4500 participants in the event and donated $95,000 to Life with Cancer from the proceeds. Our goal this year is to donate $100,000 to Life with Cancer – this would put the Virginia Run Turkey Trot’s total donation over the years to Life with Cancer at over 1 million dollars. We could not be this race without our very generous sponsors, many of whom live in Virginia Run. We will be acknowledge them in all in our Dec and Jan Horn and on our Virginia Run website. To register for the 5k run or 2K walk please visit the Virginia Run website www. virginiarun.com and click on the logo – it will direct you to registration (note the registration site is secure and there are no fees for registering online). Also, please consider volunteering to help out at the race/walk (before, after during) it takes a community to host this event! Hope to see you on Thanksgiving morning!!
