Transmission…(1) It is a great pleasure to announce the launch of the festival’s 10th anniversary… If each year the festival is an event, this anniversary means both an achievement and a bet on the future. The film industry has not been the only one to change in the last ten years. Political and economic Europe has redefined its bor- ders, winning or losing democratic rights. It has answered the question “What is Europe?” by plurality (Who knows what will happen tomorrow…) All of the new 12 European films nominated this year confirm this situation. The films, coming from Italy, Macedonia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Austria, Poland, Great Britain, Belgium and France deal more or less with the issue of territory to create a fiction or express political ideas. The choice will be hard for the members of the Jury: Maurice Benichou, Jocelyne Desverchère, Jean-Pascal Hattu, Pierre-Yves Borgeaud, Jérôme Mallien, and the students. Aside from the competition, we are very delighted to welcome: Ken Loach, Robert Guédiguian, Carlos Saura, Lenny Abrahamson, Jean Luc Bideau, Nae Caranfil, Arnaud Demuynck and Emmanuel Saget. The debates promise to be very exciting. As anniversary goes with celebration, we hope to meet you on the 11th of October for an outstanding evening with screenings of short and full-length films from the previous years; screenings that will continue all along the festival’s period. Many thanks to: Everyone who has contributed to the success of the festival during ten years! The institutions for their support The artists for their trust The audience for their loyalty Have a nice festival, (1) Chanson de Joy Division / Song of Joy Division ......................................................................................................................................................................... It has been great to see the development of the European film festival in Essonne since its creation. The main objectives of the festival were set since it started in 1999: The festival happens in all of the cinemas which are mem- bers of the Cinessonne association and focus on supporting the young European creation while participating in educating the public, particularly children from schools. Later on, the festival simply kept growing trebling its audience, developing more activities related to image studies and new ways for artists showing their films to meet with the audience. This unusual festival has become an innovative event, which is emblematic of the Conseil général film policy. I wish to praise the Cinessonne team for its imagination and talent, its desire to share its passion and its success in showing quality films to a large audience. Together, we can be proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival, as it became a real celebration for all the people from Essonne who love cinema. I am delighted to invite you to come to the twelve cinemas of the association to discover films, meetings and other surprises that Cinessone prepared for us. It's her birthday. The candles on the birthday cake are lit. But all of her loved ones have sent their apologies - they're not coming. So she takes her pretty car and leaves her pretty suburban neighborhood to get lost in the big sunny city of Marseille. I wanted to make a film just for the pleasure of making it, in a completely free style, like a theatrical “impromptu” or improvisation - a little, fast-paced poetic piece, that would be exhilarating and pure fun. I also had a strong desire to let go, to simply perform for the sake of it. The screenplay needed to be a “performance vessel” for the actors, the technicians and of course, for myself. With the exception of Le Promeneur du Champ-de-Mars [The Last Mitterand], in which she wasn’t cast, you have written 16 films for Ariane Ascaride.

Armenian poet Missak Manouchian (a stand-out performance by Simon Abkarian) and his French wife Mélinée (Virginie Ledoyen) lead a ragtag assortment of volunteers against the German occupiers and their French allies. Varying in their actual homelands and in their reasons for joining the struggle, the one thing that unites them is the understanding that the Nazis oppression will only increase unless it is squarely confronted. To that end, they hatch a plot to assassinate a general, and show that resistance is indeed possible, but their activity attracts the attention of the German high command, which decides to teach the French population a different kind of lesson. As they try to make ends meet, they reconnect with supportive relations and left no other link between people than cold interest and hard cash... Gloria’s ex-convict grandfather. It has drowned all our dreams in the icy waters of selfish calculation. That is what this dark social tale aims to show through the story of a reconstituted family as fragile as a house of cards... I have always thought that cinema should move us, sometimes by presenting us with an example of the world as it could be, at others by showing us the world as it is... In short, we need both comedies and tragedies to continue to question our lifestyles...
