Personal statement For the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity of working and studying politics in Washington, DC. Witnessing the process of federal decision-making, much of which is done without input from our people, has deepened my desire and personal urgency to participate in the Aha. By way of background, I was born and raised on Maui. For the majority of my upbringing, my family lived on the Paukukalo Homestead. Upon graduation from Kamehameha and Chaminade, I moved to DC where my work has centered upon research, analysis and technical support on federal policy issues as it relates to Native Hawaiians. It is important to highlight though, many have come before me and paved the path I travel on. Our alii/appointed representatives conducted numerous diplomatic missions to DC. Princess Kaiulani, only 17 at the time, met with federal officials to prevent annexation. Prior to her O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 4 o f 88
departure, the Princess outlined her purpose: to plead for my throne, my nation and my flag. Much has changed since then, but the importance of our presence here remains. For such a time as this, I look to Kaiulani as an example as I seek to serve a similar purpose in establishing a path for Hawaiian self-determination

Personal statement We, the first people of Hawaii, need the resources that sustain us physically, emotionally, culturally, and spiritually. We need the elements of life in our islands: Mountain, Water, Land, Ocean. With them, we can build an economy that lets us all thrive. We can work and create. We can live in the old ways—our taro fields and fish ponds supported hundreds of thousands of us—AND we can thrive in this 21st Century. We can create wealth and happiness, and a quality of life that springs from connection with each other and with our place.
This deep belonging and ownership also allows us to care for our lands and waters that have suffered with us—our destinies are linked as one family.
O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 6 o f 88
We are not greedy. We know how to share. And we are attached to, and literally in love with, all the variety that is our world today. It is who we are. We seek balance and fairness, to raise up our downpressed people, and to excel in every field we enter.
But first, we must communicate with each other: speak from the heart, no BS, and listen deeply. Not be afraid to disagree. Make decisions and mistakes together—that’s how we move.
Let us navigate together out of our common past, toward our common future.

O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 8 o f 88
Kauanoe is motivated by the hope of ushering forth a new Hawaiian era of restored self- governance. He understands that the recent arrests of activists atop Mauna Kea and Haleakala highlight the need for change in the role Hawaiians play in public affairs. He wants to take up the unfinished business of hoʻoulu i ka lahui, and join you in building a better future.
As a former aide to Senator Akaka and Congresswoman Gabbard, he has unique experience fostering social and economic development in Hawaiʻi. His service has taught him that self- determination will only be achieved through the collective efforts of an engaged citizenry, so he is currently leading a new effort to provide ʻoiwi leaders an opportunity to shape society through legislative appointments.
Kauanoe graduated as the valedictorian of his class at Kamehameha Schools Maui. He is an alumnus of Stanford University, current student at Columbia University, fellow in the First Nations Futures Program, and member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.

Personal statement I'm 25% Hawaiian which may not seem like a lot but with our heritage and blood line being diluted over the years that is a decent percentage, my grandmother always instilled in us the importance of our Hawaiian heritage. She told us stories of how she was not allowed to speak our language growing up on the Big Island; she spoke of how she was told to stay out of the sun so she wouldn't get dark. She told us how men working the field raped her. My grandmother always made sure we knew of Hawaii even though I grew up on the mainland. On her deathbed she got up and did the Hula and she said " they could never take this away from us". I love being Hawaiian and know what it means to protect our heritage and rights of our people. There is so much about the Hawaiian heritage that is being lost and forgotten and it hurts to watch our islands fade to tourist and people with no sense of what it is to be O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 12 o f 88
Hawaiian. Many people are "proud" to be local but local doesn't mean Hawaiian. It means you were fortunate enough to be raised in a beautiful land but what are they doing to save the islands of Aloha it takes more than just wearing a t-shirt or waving a flag. Action is needed.

Personal statement I stand on the shoulders of my kupuna who were advocates long before the word was coined in civic action. From them, I learned three lessons. First, self-preparation; be it
O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 14 o f 88
through understanding the dynamics of `ohana, collecting life experiences, achieving a path to higher education or demonstrating professional skills through practice; be prepared. Second, assessment. Know the community's needs, resources, capacity and strategic intervention points. Reassess along the way. Third, take action. It is this third lesson that leads me to call on Native Hawaiians to support my candidacy for delegate in the upcoming `Aha constitutional convention. The work before us is clear; build a Native Hawaiian Nation. I am prepared to take on this kuleana; to do the work, give voice, offer viable options and work collaboratively to identify a path and subsequent draft documents that represent the will of the people. I pledge a faithful spirit, a willing heart, compassionate leadership and fearless determination to see the work of the lahui through.

Personal statement Since becoming a member of Ka Lahui in the '90s, I have advocated for Hawaiian political freedom and our right to protect our culture and heritage. As a delegate, I would continue this advocacy by humbly taking on perhaps the greatest exercise in our pursuit of freedom, building a representational Hawaiian government.
O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 16 o f 88
I have a BA from UC Berkeley in Peace and Conflict Studies, studying topics such as colonization/decolonization and theories of economics, politics, and law, as well as conflict resolution and negotiation. Currently I am in law school. My professional background in IT has given me ample experience in working as part of a team and successfully seeing projects through to completion.
Today, I believe our path to justice can be found by pragmatically moving forward and securing our political and legal rights in our current political situation. And through nation building, we can build the political acumen to lay down the path for pursuing total independence.
If elected, I will serve na lahui by working to insure that a representational government will represent not just one but multiple paths to justice for my mo’opuna and yours.

Personal statement Teachings from my kūpuna provide the lens by which I see the world – an appreciation that life (all life) is precious, stewardship and humility towards the `āina, and a belief that we are stronger because of our differences not in spite of them. My work supporting a U.S. Senator on the Indian Affairs Committee has provided me first-hand experience with the ins and outs of a gov't-to-gov't relationship, and my time facilitating mediations in Hawai'i has taught me a collaborative approach to solving problems and the importance of listening to all sides of an issue before developing an opinion. If elected, my goal will be to build bridges and keep people focused on the bright future we can build together instead of getting stuck

Personal statement My family has a long tradition of service to our community. Establishing the Waikapu Sugar Plantation, first steam mill in Hawaii. Blending through marriage Hawaiian, Portuguese, and American/English stock, forming a family that continues a strong presence in Hawaii today. Cornwell received a royal land grant from Kamehameha. We had a personal relationship with the royal family. King Kalakaua was reported in the newspapers to frequent the Waikapu home of his close friend Col. William Henry Cornwell. The Colonel was a member of the House of Nobel and served as Minister of Finance to Queen Liliuokalani. More recently Cornwells have been members of the military, teachers, police officers, firefighters, nurses and doctors, hospitality workers, entertainers and dancers like cousins Genoa Keawe and Emma Sharp, business owners like George T McInerny of McInerny stores. My father and I both worked the beach, Curly Cornwell one of the original Waikiki Beachboys, taught surfing and canoeing from1924 until 1969. We have always loved our islands from near and afar and our genealogical legacy compels me to be an active participant in this nobel process. Personal statement Living away from the aina has only brought me closer to the desire to learn more about who we are as a people.. It has increased my appreciation for my Hawaian heritage and the kuleana that our kupuna have left to us to malama. Native Hawaiians have a long history of being curious and wanting to expand beyond the confines of a one place or time. Our kupuna were wise in the way they lived, in the way they cherished and respected all of nature, and in the way they fostered leadership among our people. Though wrongfully overtaken, we have never lost our sovereignty. It is time for us as Native Hawaiians to come together to carry on the legacy that had been given to us by our kupuna.

My concern is for Hawaiian Unity. The divisive elements before us today are Act 195, Kanaʻiolowalu, and the US Dept. of Interior rules for Federal Recognition as a government within a government entity.
-Kanaʻiolowalu and Naʻi Aupuni exclude and alienate many Hawaiians from participating. To be legitimate, we need the full independent lāhui.
-Practically, it is a bad idea to rush to US Federal Recognition. I see no benefit over the current Federal law regarding Native Hawaiians, and we risk surrender of claims since the overthrow.
-If those goals cannot be met, i will vote against creating a constitution.
I am only entering this process because of my concerns for Hawaiian unity, and we, like all others, demand full prior informed consent. So many of us have lived years on the mainland, and we find ourselves the malahini—in America! Our true roots are in Hawaiian culture, so we need to support the independent spirit, those asserting kuleana rights, and practitioners.

Personal statement I was born at Andrews Air force Base and raised on Kaua‘i. I have worked throughout the rural Pacific Northwest so am familiar with both local Hawaiian culture as well as life on the continent. I participate in regional Hawaiian events and study Hawaiian history, hula, feather work, and language. I am a firm believer in preserving our history, culture, and honoring our warriors. I was originally schooled in anthropology where I researched the Hawaiian sovereignty movement, but now specialize in natural resources.

I am also of Indian descent and am familiar with how Indian peoples on the continent exercise their sovereignty. While working for and interacting with Tribes, I’ve become knowledgeable of their relationships with the US government and surrounding communities. I spent many years researching and assisting several Tribes in regaining sovereignty over their avian resources. My work experience with Tribes on the continent has allowed me to see both good and bad aspects of their expression of sovereignty. This, along with my knowledge of Hawaiian culture can be helpful in crafting a new nation for Hawaiians.

Personal statement When I was a keiki growing up we had all heard stories your kupuna would tell everyone, thinking it was just a story only to understand now that this is what they had been talking about all along. Nation building is what they had been talking about. I was always told to get a good education because I will need it someday and someday is happening now. Our kupuna warned us about protecting Hawai’i, our ohana and especially our 'aina. This is it! O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 38 o f 88

Personal statement It takes a nation to become strong. Our fight is for not only our past, but our future. The preservation of our ancestors is the preservation of our people. To represent our nation would be an honor. I have worked with many diverse people and built a foundation for success, with honesty; integrity; and clear communication. To be a team leader, one has to understand that our world is changed and our ideas have to change as well. There is an "I" in team as it takes a group of Individuals that are Interdependent upon each other to Improve our lives. (Individuals; Interdependent; Improve)

Develop ways to bridge divisions. Passionate activism often injures new efforts; many projects can coexist. Hawaii needs diverse skills & people. Celebrate Hawaiian success stories & strong role models (David Malo Awards, etc.).

We'd wide diplomatic relations at overthrow - reforge global links. Washington's federal agenda can choke Pacific dynamism; Hawaii's more than a garrison state. Diaspora is Strength! Cultivate our cousins around the Pacific & wider world. Build more welcome in Hometown Hawaii.
Hawaiian inheritance is not reparation, nor an entitlement program. Our inheritance doesn't infringe equal opportunity of others. American families such as Rockefeller, Bush or Kennedy maintain valuable tracts of land & inherit smoothly - we Hawaiian families deserve no less.
Help the weakest: health, housing, education. Create ways more young Hawaiians can stay rural & thrive. Elders should feel secure at home & enjoy community. Australia, Cayman Isles, Jersey, Rapa Nui, etc. limit non-resident speculation in property. Seek consensus on better land use. What of Kahoolawe?
I can't promise "Full Moon Every Night!" But this process can re-energize Hawaii.

Personal statement Aloha. Of the Malailua's I'm the first generation born on the mainland. We left Oahu after the war, and since I was a small boy my memories are filled of my Ohana's love for the Hawaiian traditions. At almost every Ohana gathering the Ukulele would be played, songs would be sung and the Wahine's would dance the Hula. All centered on my Tutu [Grandmother's] traditional Island Ono. Oh yes, and I like poi too. I have had many joys and responsibilities in life. I’ve been married to the same Wahine for 31 years, and we have six keiki together, the youngest now 24 years old. God be Praised, I believe in Jesus and have lived by his teaching since I was a young Kane, I have been active in the Church in every capacity .I sat on the Elder Board of Rancho Tehama Community Church for 10 years. Personal statement If elected to the Governance "Aha"...
Quite simply, Itʻs time...to resolve the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. It is time to recognize our Kuleana, to build a Hawaiian Nation that will act on our behalf, that will stand for us, and also by us. Let it be recognized, we are Hawaiians, and -- "Hawaiians Matter".
With this Kuleana, let us begin to salvage and make whole, our native rights, heritage, culture, traditions, language and our "Aina.
O u t s i d e H I - Delegate Candidate Information P a g e 65 o f 88
For too long, we have elected and empowered others to make decisions --for Hawaii. In order for us to have a voice, we must organize. In order for us to take a seat at the table, we must be recognized.
Simply, why is our indigenous status an issue? Briefly, Webster, defined, Indigenous as: 1. Existing, growing, or produced naturally in a region or country. belonging to,as a native; 2. Innate; inherent; inborn. We are indigenous.
The OHA was not meant to exist this long, 36 years. It is time, we empower ourselves. Let us build it. Let us build it together. Now is the time to act!
I am, Winona Matsuzaki, and I thank you for this opportunity to participate as a delegate in this most important process, to build a Hawaiian Nation. Mahalo!

Personal statement I witnessed and lived a lifetime of native people struggling to form proud identities honoring multiple cultures of thoughts and beliefs. I learned that my maternal grandparents chose for my then young mother to become more American than Hawaiian during her childhood years, 1950s and 1960s. Within a generation, and with intentionality, my family lost their language and assimilated towards imminent colonization with the United States. With the guidance of my parents, I attended a school for Hawaiian children and took Hawaiian language in college. I actively engaged in Native Hawaiian Dance as a philosophy of life from childhood to present day. I planned a lifetime of work with native children toddler through mixed aged preschool and their families for the expanse of my lifetime. Our move to the continent, away from all that is familiar and true, came suddenly in 1998. Uprooting from Hawaii to Arizona was quite the cultural shock for young parents such as us, but we accepted that this opportunity was the best choice for the family. Our faith in our choices afforded opportunity for me to work at AWC. Here I continue my quest to better the quality of the world through the children.

Personal statement I will seek to be a voice for Hawaiians in re-establishing a Native Hawaiian governing entity. Once a Native Hawaiian government and its constitution is re-established, Native Hawaiians and citizens of this sovereign governing entity may seek recognition at an international, federal and or state level, dependent on the will of the people.

To be Hawaiian is enough and should be the determining factor to participate in the nation- building process. I accept the notion that many Hawaiians living outside of Hawaiʻi, do not know what is transpiring in Hawaiʻi. I would also challenge that many Hawaiians who live in Hawaiʻi, do not know what is transpiring in Hawaiʻi. If we are willing to inform and educate Hawaiians living in Hawaiʻi, why are we not willing to inform and educate Hawaiians living outside of Hawaiʻi? No matter where they reside, or the circumstances or the decision on where they reside, let us be inclusive of all Hawaiians.
As a community advocate leading and empowering community based and national organizations, a businessman, a husband, a father, and a grandfather, I offer this life experience to contribute in building our lahui.

Personal statement Throughout my lifetime, I have been very blessed and am forever thankful to Ke Akua, Na Aumakua, Na Kupuna, and Ohana. I have also been extremely fortunate to have had many amazing individuals share her or his wealth of knowledge and gifts with me; in hopes of assisting to better shape my life and the directions I’ve chosen to travel along this journey. Growing up and attending schools in the mainland (WA), and then being able to return to our Ewa Beach home during school breaks always provided me with diverse experiences while gaining a strong educational foundation of the Western World and Hawaii. However, being educated and living primarily in the Mainland has had its definite advantages and disadvantages which I am hoping to be able to draw upon in order to provide a varied view, open discussion, and to further assist our Native Hawaiian Community in self-determining the BEST pathway that will allow our Culture, Legacy, Pride, and AINA to surge and grow. It is OUR time to come together as ONE and to no more splinter the ROOTS that binds US; connect US as Kanaka Maoli - I am deeply passionate and tirelessly committed to working towards making past wrongs, PONO for ALL!
