The Passion Translation | Psalms Study | Dr. Brian Simmons Lesson 4 / Psalm 4: An Evening Prayer for Help For the Pure and Shining One. For the end. A melody by King David. “No matter what happens, I will live unafraid.” (v.8) This precious declaration of Psalm 4 is the inheritance of all God’s devoted ones. And, oh, what a treasure it is! Far beyond any earthly wealth or material source of security is the blessed confidence of knowing that God sees us, hears us, and will answer our cries for help. We are not orphans! This is the first of fifty-five Psalms addressed in the inscription: to The Chief Choir Director, or Choirmaster. For believers today, we know that the Chief (Head) musician is Jesus Christ! He is the Director of music who sings in the midst of His people (Heb.2:12). He is also the Chief Cornerstone as well as the Chief Shepherd who spent the night watch praying to the Father and was heard out of His distress. This psalm is known as the Hymn of the Evening. The Septuagint reads, “For the end”, however in Hebrew it is rendered “smitings” or “plucking strings.” During the days of Absalom’s rebellion, David ran from Jerusalem and slept out in the fields. Perhaps it was written the evening after writing Psalm 3. This is a prayer for help as evening closes in. David, in whatever situation he was in, found himself desperately needing God’s help. It is a melody of David composed in a difficult situation. -

In the 5th century writings of Possidius, we learn that Saint Augustine: …ordered the Davidic Psalms, which are few in number concerning penance, to be copied for him, and lying in bed he used to look at those pages which had been placed on the opposite wall and read them, and wept profusely and con- tinuously (Vita S. Augustini, xxxi) The first unequivocal reference to the seven “penitential” psalms as a group dates back to Cassiodorus (d. 580 A.D.), in his Expositio Psalmorum. Psalm 4:8 (NLT) In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. Psalm 31:21-22 (NLT) Praise the Lord, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city was under attack. In panic I cried out, “I am cut off from the Lord!” But you heard my cry for mercy and answered my call for help. Psalm 46 (NIV) God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Context: Psalm 96 is a Psalm of praise, attributed to David. Nearly all 13 verses of Psalm 96 are also found in 1 Chronicles 16:8-36, another Psalm of praise written by David. In 1 Chronicles 15 we see David victoriously bringing the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem. Then in 1 Chronicles 16 we see David bring it into the tent that he set up for it, and there was a large worship service. Amidst much singing, dancing and praise, David instructs the people to sing a Psalm in verses 8- 36 of chapter 16. Our psalm today, 96, as well as psalms 105 and 106, all contain portions of this psalm in Chronicles. Not only does this confirm Davidic authorship for these psalms, it also shows us the occasion for the use of this particular song: celebration and praise. In Chronicles the people were celebrating the return of the Ark to Jerusalem. David had just defeated the Philistines and was bringing the Ark into Jerusalem for the first time. This was signifying God’s presence returning, and there was a huge party in celebration for all of these events. Understanding its origins, we can see better how this psalm praises God with an emphasis on God’s rule and reign, as well as his presence for Israel. With a look backwards to the Ark arriving in Jerusalem, this Psalm also is looking forward to when the Messiah brings God’s reign over all the earth. God is the true king over all the earth, and he is coming to be here among us. -

ARTICLE BILLS OF ATTAINDER Matthew Steilen* ABSTRACT What are bills of attainder? The traditional view is that bills of attainder are legislation that punishes an individual without judicial process. The Bill of Attainder Clause in Article I, Section 9 prohibits the Congress from passing such bills. But what about the President? The traditional view would seem to rule out application of the Clause to the President (acting without Congress) and to executive agencies, since neither passes bills. This Article aims to bring historical evidence to bear on the question of the scope of the Bill of Attainder Clause. The argument of the Article is that bills of attainder are best understood as a summary form of legal process, rather than a legislative act. This argument is based on a detailed historical reconstruction of English and early American practices, beginning with a study of the medieval Parliament rolls, year books, and other late medieval English texts, and early modern parliamentary diaries and journals covering the attainders of Elizabeth Barton under Henry VIII and Thomas Wentworth, earl of Strafford, under Charles I. -

Cultivate - PSALMS PSALM 126: We now come to the seventh of the "Songs of Ascent," a lovely group of Psalms that God's people would sing and pray together as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Here in this Psalm they are praying for the day when the Lord would "restore the fortunes" of God's people (vs.1,4). 126 is a prayer for spiritual revival and reawakening. The first half is all happiness and joy, remembering how God answered this prayer once. But now that's just a memory... like a dream. They need to be renewed again. So they call out to God once more: transform, restore, deliver us again. Don't you think this is a prayer that God's people could stand to sing and pray today? Pray it this week. We'll pray it together on Sunday. God is here inviting such prayer; he's even putting the very words in our mouths. PSALM 127: This is now the eighth of the "Songs of Ascent," which God's people would sing on their procession up to the temple. We've seen that Zion / Jerusalem / The House of the Lord are all common themes in these Psalms. But the "house" that Psalm 127 refers to (in v.1) is that of a dwelling for a family. 127 speaks plainly and clearly to our anxiety-ridden thirst for success. How can anything be strong or successful or sufficient or secure... if it does not come from the Lord? Without the blessing of the Lord, our lives will come to nothing. -

READ The BIBLE Together Selected Psalms from Book III [Psalm 73, 75-77, 80, 84, 87 & 89] 15th February – 18th April 2015 SHALOM CHURCH, SINGAPORE (Upholding the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith) 1 Week 1 [15th – 21st February 2015] We read some selected psalms from Book I (Psalm 1-41) for our RTBT in May-June 2012 and some selected psalms from Book II (Psalm 42-72) for our RTBT in Mar-May 2013. For this current RTBT series, we shall be studying some selected psalms from Book III (Psalm 73-89). As we do so, let us first re-read the Introduction to the Book of Psalms: The Hebrew title of the Book of Psalms is ‘praise’. In other words, the Book of Psalms is the book of praise. Now, that’s an unusual title. Why do I say that? Survey the 150 individual psalms and you will see that there are more sad psalms than happy psalms, more psalms of laments than psalms of praise! That being so, why is the Book of Psalms called the book of praise? Survey the 150 individual psalms again and you will see this pattern emerging -- you will meet many sad psalms in the beginning, but as you move nearer to the end, the sad psalms decrease while the happy psalms increase! [Psalm 3 is a psalm of lament, so is Psalm 4, Psalm 6, Psalm 7, Psalm 10, Psalm 12, Psalm 13, to mention just the first few. Psalm 146 is a psalm of praise, and so also is Psalm 147, Psalm 148, Psalm 149 and Psalm 150!] The Book of Psalms moves from lamentations to praise, from the chords of sufferings to the choruses of praises.
