Horton Botany Exhumed Digitised newspapers on Trove, the availability of British 18th and 19th century newspapers on line, and Ancestry, has surely provided enough material to make something of our nation’s past, which is both a quality and entertaining product. Whilst the British have provided the world with Downton Abbey, where are we, Australia in creating the like. Why this should be we shall leave for discussion on another day. Botany - An exhumation of a nineteenth century community is an attempt to provide a flickering kaleidoscope of the senses, the sounds, sights, smells, touch and taste of the past, which we living in the sanitised and virtual reality of our present, are the lesser for ignoring. The somewhat vain hope is that this work might provide inspiration to others, such that Botany might become our Downton Abbey. That they both have at their core Lords, one Grantham, the other Simeon, might give us some hope. Botany was dead to begin with. The Sydney Airport Authority had said so, and hadn’t they provided a concrete slab of some enormity, tastefully bitumenised in black, which testified to the fact. The property developer having had any guilt assuaged by a suitably academic heritage study, provided monumental towers. The Cooks River, on recognising death was eminent, turned its face and sought refuge to the south, where it entered the sea. To begin our exhumation. Botany though was unique, is unique, the only community in our world to be given that name. It is however in its history that we should begin to see just how unique it is.

From perusing the file the Voluntary Planning Agreements were executed and a copy of the original held by us is attached. Although initially it appeared that the land had not been dedicated as a public road, Council subsequently found out that there was a re-alignment vested in Council on 1 July 1993 such that this was the formal lodgement of a plan to enable the separate block to be created. Interestingly Council is entitled to register a caveat over the title to the property if the Planning Agreement is not registered if the consents have not been obtained from the persons required. The only consent required here is the tenant. We also note that the request registration was sent to the owner' solicitors PT & W Law by Bert Houston on 16 June 2014 together with a copy of the plan for signing by the owner and tenant. We enclose a copy of the plan sent and survey. It was intended to then have the plan signed once returned signed by Council by the owner and his tenant.

It has been identified that replacement of two existing high voltage feeders which currently connect EnergyAustralia’s Bunnerong subtransmission substation (“STS”) at Matraville with its Canterbury STS at Earlwood, must be achieved by late 2008. The preferred replacement for the feeders, known as Feeders 908 and 909, however, is a new connection between Bunnerong and Kurnell across Botany Bay. It is proposed that the new feeders would take the following route: • from Bunnerong STS, following the road alignments to La Perouse (3.2km); • under the National Park at La Perouse by way of horizontal directional drilling (0.5km); • across Botany Bay by way of submarine cable to a section of Silver Beach situated outside (but next to) the National Park at Kurnell (2.2km); and • from Silver Beach to Kurnell STS, following the road alignments (1.5km). At Bunnerong STS, little work is proposed other than the laying of the cables within the site and connecting them to new terminations and existing equipment/apparatus. The new connections would provide an opportunity to upgrade Kurnell STS so that supplies to the Kurnell Peninsula are more secure, as well as facilitating the additional power into the CBD and inner metropolitan area.

Foreword In recent years, there has been a push to set up an index of records that would help people separated from their families find them once again. Two years ago, a report called Origins and Identity, commissioned by the NSW Attorney GeneralÕs Department and the Department of Community Services (DOCS), examined the need for search services for people separated by adoption and other circumstances. It recommended that DOCS establish a project to locate all NSW records relating to children separated from their families since 1900. The recommendations of the Bringing Them Home report from the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families, and the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, also identified the need to index and preserve records of Indigenous children removed from their homes.

In February 2012, Archaeological and Heritage Management Solutions Pty Ltd (AHMS) was commissioned by Crown Prosha Joint Venture (CPJV) to undertake an Aboriginal and historical archaeological impact assessment of the proposed redevelopment of the Eastlakes Shopping Centre, Eastlakes NSW (‘the subject site’); 2. CPJV proposes to redevelop the site and is seeking Project Approval for the proposed development under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 (Major Project Number: MP 09_0146). 3. The heritage assessment will be part of the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed redevelopment of the subject site. 4. Specifically, the heritage assessment was undertaken in response to the draft Director General’s Requirements (DGR) 14 (dating to the 4 April) which stated that ‘the EA shall provide an Archaeological Assessment of Aboriginal and non-Indigenous archaeological resources, including an assessment of the significance and potential impact on the archaeological resources’. 5. The final DGRs issued 5 April 2012, added that the archaeological assessment should be undertaken in accordance with the ‘DECCW guidance for Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment and Community Consultation’. The heritage assessment generally follows the DECCW ‘Draft Guidelines For Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment and Community Consultation’ (Department of Environment and Conservation, now Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) July 2005). 6. Informal Aboriginal community consultation was undertaken with the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council as part of the archaeological assessment.
