Once again, we are lucky enough to be hosted by Dudley Town Hall. A big thank you to all the staff and their continuing hard work to make our Beer Festival such a success. As always DWAF is run completely by volunteers; we started planning the festival in June, but really it never stops. Special thanks go to all the volunteers and their undying loyalty to putting on such a long running festival. The set up started on Monday morning and in a few short hours the setup, cooling and cellar teams created the largest bar in Dudley at the grade 2 listed Town Hall. Again, this year, the beer selection team has tried to choose a varied range of beer and cider. Some local breweries are featured along with some lesser known breweries. We again feature a Key Keg Bar and Foreign Beer Fridge. DWAF is once again judging several competitions including the Champion Beer of the West Midlands.

    WYLDE GREEN HOUSE, SUTTON COLDFIELD A short history of this once prominent house By Alan Howells The Wylde Green district, south of the town, between Sutton Coldfield and Erdington, had been an agricultural and farming area since the middle ages. Earliest records of the area date from the fourteenth century. For over four hundred years the major land owners and farmers were the Sedgewick family. They lived in the farmhouse of the large Wylde Green Farm situated east of the Birmingham Road and south of Wylde Green Road (originally Walmley Road). Most of the farm is now occupied by Walmley Golf Club. The farmhouse was a large Tudor residence rebuilt in 1639 using bricks manufactures by han from local clay. The farm was large, the fourth wealthiest estate in Sutton after Moor Hall, New Hall and the estate of the Rector of Sutton. The family was prominent in town affairs, various Sedgwicks holding the office of Warden. Map of Sutton Coldfield in the eighteenth century, based on Yates’ 1789 map of Warwickshire. The 1600s and the first Wylde Green House. The farm was being managed and run by tenant farmers living in the farmhouse, and the Sedgewicks decided to have another house built on part of their land close to the green at Wylde Green. It stood at the junction of Wylde Green Road and Birmingham Road with easy access to the road network; this was the first Wylde Green House. No details of this house have been found except for a plan of its location. It is recorded in the Hearth Tax returns for Sutton Coldfield in the 1670s as having one hearth, whereas the large farmhouse was taxed on six hearths.

    Historical and contemporary archaeologies of social housing: changing experiences of the modern and new, 1870 to present Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Emma Dwyer School of Archaeology and Ancient History University of Leicester 2014 Thesis abstract: Historical and contemporary archaeologies of social housing: changing experiences of the modern and new, 1870 to present Emma Dwyer This thesis has used building recording techniques, documentary research and oral history testimonies to explore how concepts of the modern and new between the 1870s and 1930s shaped the urban built environment, through the study of a particular kind of infrastructure that was developed to meet the needs of expanding cities at this time – social (or municipal) housing – and how social housing was perceived and experienced as a new kind of built environment, by planners, architects, local government and residents. This thesis also addressed how the concepts and priorities of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, and the decisions made by those in authority regarding the form of social housing, continue to shape the urban built environment and impact on the lived experience of social housing today. In order to address this, two research questions were devised: How can changing attitudes and responses to the nature of modern life between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries be seen in the built environment, specifically in the form and use of social housing? Can contradictions between these earlier notions of the modern and new, and our own be seen in the responses of official authority and residents to the built environment? The research questions were applied to three case study areas, three housing estates constructed between 1910 and 1932 in Birmingham, London and Liverpool.

    5 abc Public report Report to Scrutiny Board 3 24 June 2009 Scrutiny Co-ordination Committee 24 June 2009 Cabinet 29 June 2009 Report of Director of City Development Title Coventry's Core Strategy 1 Purpose of the Report 1.1 The purpose of this report is to advise of the representations received to the Core Strategy and to seek authority to submit it for examination subject to certain minor amendments 2 Recommendations 2.1 The Scrutiny Board 3 are asked to consider this report and convey their comments to the Cabinet 2.2 The Cabinet are asked to: (a) consider the responses to the representations received, including a petition; and (b) consider the comments of Scrutiny Board 3; and (c) authorise the submission to examination of the Core Strategy as amended in accordance with the attached schedule. 3 Information/Background 3.1 The Core Strategy sets out the vision, objectives and strategic policies for the future development of the City over the next twenty years. It will be a major part of Coventry's Local Development Framework (LDF) and will be the spatial expression of a combination of the Sustainable Community Strategy, regional planning policy and national planning policy. The Core Strategy and other parts of the LDF will form the statutory development plan for the City, along with the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the West Midlands. 3.2 The LDF will also include a City Centre Area Action Plan, and an "emerging strategy" is expected to be published for consultation in September 2009. This will build on the work undertaken so far in developing the Core Strategy and various different quarters of the city centre and in particular the Jerde masterplan and the Draft Urban Design Framework Supplementary Planning Document which Planning Committee has approved for public consultation.
