Sample Pages Preface and Acknowledgements The Center for Israel Education is delighted to provide you with this learning unit, “The June 1967 War: How It Changed Jewish, Israeli and Middle Eastern History.” Since our inception in 2008, the work of CIE has focused on content, context and perspective, hence all the materials provided contain foreshadowing and analyses, without prejudice to a particular political identity or outlook. In both the Leader’s Guide and Participant Booklet, one will fine a deep historic background to the June 1967 War and an amplification of its aftermath. One should be able to judge why the June 1967 war was a transformative moment in Jewish, Israeli, and Middle Eastern history. Both the Leader’s Guide and Participant Booklet contain maps, a chronology of entwined events before, during and after the war, a timeline of Zionism from the 1880s to 2017, and an extensive bibliography with on-line references to books, articles, and most importantly excellent videos. Significant portions include active links to the CIE website and other useful and reputable websites where more information about the June 1967 War and Israel more broadly are provided. The Leader’s Guide is designed to channel discussion and provides suggested answers to posed questions where appropriate. It rests with the leader to decide where to begin chronologically. That will vary from audience to audience, depend in great measure upon the age of the participants, and the leader’s comfort level with the material. Each leader will have to decide how much context to provide and what material participants may wish to read or view on their own. Suggested activities for engaging participants with the material are found throughout the Leader’s Guide. The material is designed to be flexible and the leader can choose to begin the learning sessions either with the context provided at the beginning or delve right into the details of the June 1967 War itself. Wherever you choose to being, we highly recommend that everyone read the Timeline of Zionism from the 1880s to the present, which can be found in the Appendix on page 83. Appreciation and Thanks Impetus for the preparation of “The June 1967 War: How It Changed Jewish, Israeli and Middle Eastern History,” emerged from a December 2015 discussion at ARZA’s New York offices and in subsequent discussions with Rabbi Joshua Weinberg about teenage and adult education. By the end of the summer 2016, CIE had agreed to provide Israel enrichment sessions in person and over the internet for students who had recently returned from the Eisendrath International Exchange NFTY High School in Israel. Nine months later, after working with these dedicated students and in additional discussions with Rabbis Judith Schindler, Joshua Weinberg, and Neal Gold, we finalized our objectives and time frame. The unit could not have seen the light of day without the central participation of my colleagues Roni Eshel, Rabbi Ellen Nemhauser, an our devoted student interns. Three colleagues at CIE worked from the very beginning with diligence, acuity, and passion to package the story and add to its value: Rich Walter’s creativity, Eli Sperling’s research skills, and Heather Waters sharp eye contributed to this final CIE product. Four decades of teaching the causes and results of the June 1967 War in Emory College provided me with invaluable awareness of the vast array of materials produced on this subject. Winnowing a great deal of it into shorter passages or not including some data points at all because of space was inevitable. Contracting the voices and sources of this major event and its unfinished aftermath into these pages is similar to putting tooth-paste back into the tube. Background for the Leader (continued from previous page): 2. After the passage of Resolution 181 by the United Nations on November 29, 1947, violence flared up between Arabs and Jews in Palestine as well as against Jews in various cities within Arab countries. Arab leaders in neighboring states, notably Syria and Iraq, ramped up rhetoric calling for action to prevent the UN resolution from being carried out, implemented Arab military recruitment and conscription measures and raised funds for impending action against a future Jewish state. 3. On December 8, 1947, members of the Arab League met in Cairo and devised a plan to establish an Arab volunteer army to fight against Jews in Palestine. Many of the Arab leaders were wary of Transjordan King Abdullah’s desire to annex Palestine. The Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al Husayni, the political leader of the Arabs in Palestine, sought to appoint the leader of this force, but the Arab leaders were as wary of him as they were of Abdullah. As a result, Fauzi al-Qawuqji, a former leader in the 1936-1939 Arab Rebellion was appointed to head what would be called the Arab Liberation army (ALA). The tension over who would control a future Palestine, especially between the Mufti and Abdullah as well as the Hajj Amin al-Husayni, circa 1929 other Arab states was symptomatic of the fragmented and Source: G. The ALA targeted Haganah forces and focused on controlling access to Jewish villages in order to isolate them from larger Jewish population centers. Despite initial setbacks, including a siege of Jerusalem, the Haganah, with newly acquired arms from Czechoslovakia and support from the Irgun and Lehi, began to have success against the ALA in early April 1948. 4. Even as he was declaring Israel’s independence on May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion was aware of the impending attack that the new country faced. “In the midst of wanton aggression, we yet call upon the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel to return to the ways of peace and play their part in the development of the State, with full and equal citizenship and the representation in all its bodies and institutions, provisional or permanent. We offer peace and amity to all the neighboring states and their David Ben-Gurion recognizes the peoples, and invite them to cooperate with the independent Jewish gravity of the moment just before nation for the common good of all.     New Book on Revisionist-Zionist Terrorists Thomas G. Mitchell, Ph.D., an independent scholar, is an occasional contributor to our blog. His newest books are “Likud Leaders” (McFarland, 2015) and “Israel’s Security Men” (McFarland, 2015). Dr. Mitchell’s review (below), embeds Bruce Hoffman’s new book in an ongoing discussion on how important the terror/guerrilla campaigns of the two Revisionist Zionist undergrounds were in the creation of Israel. Hoffman, as well as Tablet reviewer Adam Kirsch, hedge their bets somewhat, but suggest that these terror attacks were crucial; Tom Segev, who reviewed it for the NY Times, is doubtful. Anonymous Soldiers: The Struggle for Israel 1917-47 By Bruce Hoffman, Alfred A. Knopf, 618 pp. (484 pp. of text), $35 ($25.41 on Amazon). International terrorism expert Bruce Hoffman has chosen to write a book about the exploits of the Irgun Zvai Leumi (the Irgun or Etzel) and Lehi (Stern Group) in driving the British out of Palestine in the 1940s. Why should Hoffman have spent his time researching and writing this book and why should you spend your time reading it? First, Palestine is a classic example of a victorious strategy of urban guerrilla warfare, much like Ireland from 1919 to 1921. From the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, Menahem Begin’s memoir of his life as an underground leader, The Revolt, was almost required reading for revolutionary leaders in British colonies and had a major influence with EOKA in Cyprus and the IRA in Northern Ireland. Second, Hoffman’s book tells the story of the origins of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, which is still with us today.

Yom Yerushalayim: The Reunification of A People And A Past By Elana Yael Heideman There has been a continuous Jewish presence in Jerusalem, and our connection to and passion for the city has been preserved as a memory by Jewish people around the world. Though the modern state of Israel was born in 1948, for years Jews were cut off from the Old City of Jerusalem and the Kotel, the Western Wall - the heart of the Jewish people, the axis of our collective national and historical identity, the center of our faith, and the focus of the history of the Jewish people for generations. Throughout Israel and around the world, on the 28th of the Hebrew month of Iyar, we celebrate being reunited with the city of Zion, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, our only Jerusalem. History shows that it was the Jews who have made Jerusalem important to the world. In 1004 BCE, King David established Jerusalem as the capital of the Kingdom of Israel (2 Samuel 5:6). Following the first exile, he proclaimed: "If I forget you Jerusalem, let my right hand lose its strength. Let my tongue cling to my palate if I fail to recall you, if I fail to elevate Jerusalem above my highest joy." Three times a day, or even just twice a year, for thousands of years, Jews turn their faces towards Jerusalem and the Temple Mount and pray for a return to Jerusalem and to Tzion.

    Lehi and the Arabs Here we discuss Lehi’s personal contacts with the Arabs, as indicated by his family background and his association with Ishmael, whose descendants in the New World closely resemble the Ishmaelites (Bedouins) of the Old World. The names of Lehi and some of his sons are pure Arabic. The Book of Mormon depicts Lehi as a man of three worlds, and it has recently become generally recognized that the ancient Hebrews shared fully in the culture and traditions of the desert on the one hand and in the cultural heritage of Egypt on the other. Lehi’s ties with the Arabs are many and interesting. Since the only comprehensive study of this theme is a chapter of Lehi in the Desert, we can do no better in this lesson than to quote that chapter, with necessary alterations and additions. Signicance of Manasseh Now of all the tribes of Israel, Manasseh was the one which lived farthest out in the desert, came into the most frequent contact with the Arabs, intermarried with them most frequently, and at the same time had the closest traditional bonds with Egypt.1 The prominence of the name of Ammon in the Book of Mormon may have something to do with the fact that Ammon was Manasseh’s nearest neighbor and often fought him in the deserts east of Jordan; at the same time a prehistoric connection with the Ammon of Egypt is not at all out of the question. The seminomadic nature of Manasseh might explain why Lehi seems out of touch with things in Jerusalem.

The papers cover his two tours of duty in Vietnam while in the U.S. Army, November 1967-November 1968 and July 1969-May 1970. The papers were a gift of Christopher D. Ammons, given in several accessions from 1981-1998. There are no restrictions on the use of the materials. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Christopher D. Ammons was born in Norfolk, Virginia on April 18, 1948, son of Benjamin Troy Ammons and Ester Magna Randolph Ammons. His father had joined the National Guard in 1928, and when his unit was activated in 1942, he served in World War II. He remained in the army at the close of the war, taking his family to many places around the world before settling in the Clarksville, Tennessee area in 1958. Christopher Ammons enlisted in the U.S. Army June 1, 1967, one week after graduating from high school. After basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky. and infantry training at Fort McClellan, Ala., he was sent to Vietnam in early November. He was assigned to the First Infantry Division (the Big Red One) in Company A, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry.

    DOWN WITH BRITAIN, AWAY WITH ZIONISM: THE ‘CANAANITES’ AND ‘LOHAMEY HERUT ISRAEL’ BETWEEN TWO ADVERSARIES Roman Vater* ABSTRACT: The imposition of the British Mandate over Palestine in 1922 put the Zionist leadership between a rock and a hard place, between its declared allegiance to the idea of Jewish sovereignty and the necessity of cooperation with a foreign ruler. Eventually, both Labour and Revisionist Zionism accommodated themselves to the new situation and chose a strategic partnership with the British Empire. However, dissident opinions within the Revisionist movement were voiced by a group known as the Maximalist Revisionists from the early 1930s. This article analyzes the intellectual and political development of two Maximalist Revisionists – Yonatan Ratosh and Israel Eldad – tracing their gradual shift to anti-Zionist positions. Some questions raised include: when does opposition to Zionist politics transform into opposition to Zionist ideology, and what are the implications of such a transition for the Israeli political scene after 1948? Introduction The standard narrative of Israel’s journey to independence goes generally as follows: when the British military rule in Palestine was replaced in 1922 with a Mandate of which the purpose was to implement the 1917 Balfour Declaration promising support for a Jewish ‘national home’, the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine gained a powerful protector. In consequence, Zionist politics underwent a serious shift when both the leftist Labour camp, led by David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973), and the rightist Revisionist camp, led by Zeev (Vladimir) Jabotinsky (1880-1940), threw in their lot with Britain. The idea of the ‘covenant between the Empire and the Hebrew state’1 became a paradigm for both camps, which (temporarily) replaced their demand for a Jewish state with the long-term prospect of bringing the Yishuv to qualitative and quantitative supremacy over the Palestinian Arabs under the wings of the British Empire.
