The Man Alone, the Black Sheep and the Bad Apple: Squeaky Wheels of New Zealand Cinema Brenda Allen* In two recent New Zealand films, Black Sheep (Jonathan King, 2006) and Eagle vs Shark (Taika Waititi, 2007), the now passé trope of the Man Alone is framed as a squeaky wheel in love with its own malfunction. In King’s horror-comedy, a reluctant hero, Henry, who is pathologically afraid of sheep, fights his older brother Angus, a mutant were-sheep, with the assistance of his eco-activist love interest, Experience. By the end of the adventure Henry, a de facto city boy, reconciles with the land of his settler forebears. Waititi’s romantic comedy presents a self-absorbed and unromantic hero, Jarrod, who struggles to shine in the shadow of his deceased brother, Gordon. Jarrod and his dysfunctional father, Jonah, find themselves and each other through the supportive example and family values of love interest Lily. In both films the heroes begin as dysfunctional “men alone” and female characters, together with renewed contact with the land of their family homes, prove crucial to their catharsis, an outcome that is often missing in more traditional treatments of the trope. The strategy for recuperating these men alone involves Antipodean Camp, a style of humour identified by Nick Perry in 1998 and characterised by excess, reversal and parody. Perhaps because they come almost a decade later, Eagle vs Shark and Black Sheep do not encode the “genuflections to European taste” Perry notes in his examples, and, unlike those films, Black Sheep and Eagle vs Shark are self-aware enough to play on double meanings that point to “any idea of culture, including a national culture, as artifice” (Perry 14). -

ANALYSIS “Big Two-Hearted River” (1925) Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) Chapter IV The vignette preceding the story, Chapter IV, renders the death of a bullfighter gored in the arena. In the previous vignette the bullfighter, Maera, is characterized as a responsible matador with integrity who is consequently assigned the bad bulls that survive bad matadors. The story dramatizes the recovery of a soldier wounded in the war, who like the bullfighter got injured by chance. A bull is wild like warfare and wildfire. The first 7 vignettes in In Our Time are about war, followed by one about crime, then 6 vignettes about bullfighting. This vignette and story bring together the thematic motifs of war and bullfighting. Both the soldier and the bullfighter are carried away on a stretcher, one in war and one in peace. Everything speeds up for the bullfighter as he dies, whereas everything slows down for Nick as he recovers. The vignette that follows the story is the second one about crime, bringing the third motif into relation with the other two. In Our Time is a succession of dispatches and stories by a war correspondent intended to shock complacent readers into facing the brutal facts of life. Violence and the prospect of death are everywhere in our time and all time. I Nick Adams, an American Adam, experiences a “Fall” when he gets wounded on the Italian front in Chapter VI of In Our Time (1925): “He had been hit in the spine.” Though he is the protagonist, Nick is so much subordinated in the book, especially by the vignettes—in the Naturalist tradition the individual is a small and insignificant speck in the universe--that most readers miss the fact that he got wounded and consequently have no idea what happens in the last story or what it means. -

Creatures in Hemingway's Short Stories: 静岡県立大学 Les Hommages to Human Grief 99 短期大学部 研究紀要第 12-1 号 1998 年度 Creatures in Hemingway's Short Stories: Les Hommages to Human Grief Hiroshi TAKAHASHI The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway, the Finca Vigía Edition published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1987, contains in its whole bulk of seventy stories the eight items in whose titles Hemingway had the same number of creatures included: ① "Cat in the Rain," ② "Hills Like White Elephants," ③ "A Canary for One," ④ "The Butterfly and the Tank," ⑤ "The Good Lion," ⑥ "The Faithful Bull," ⑦ "Get a Seeing-Eyed Dog," and ⑧ "Black Ass at the Cross Roads"(gothics added). While it is admitted that the group of animals mentioned above show the author's innate penchant for animated nature such as often seen in his works, whether in novels, in short stories, or in essays, it may also be of some interest to some readers and critics of Hemingway's short stories to notice that these eight stories may be capable of a collective survey as one lot, in terms of his technical feats by exquisitely using living things as crucial props or measures to enhance dramatic effects with, although not like such significantly big elements in the development of stories as the bulls in The Sun Also Rises or the leopard and the hyena in "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." The technique of introducing into the works something like simile, metaphor, implication, association, insinuation, reminder, or instigator by using animals could be regarded as of the topnotch quality. -

Lewis PAGES: 86 The literature of Ernest Hemingway is rich with military lessons derived from his lifetime of proximity to war and his understanding of soldiers and leaders at all levels as presented through his characters. Hemingway wrote two significant military works that treat deeply the psyche and behavior of soldiers in war: For Whom the Bell Tolls presented a guerilla band led by an American professor named Robert Jordan, and exposed the different types of junior and senior leaders, as well as an ideal soldier in Anselmo, the old, untrained partisan. Across the River and Into the Trees was equally rich in military insights, at a much higher level of command, through the bitter musings of Colonel Cantwell. Hemingway’s fiction represented and reproduced the detailed awareness he had of soldiers and leaders, good and bad. He was born with the natural instinct to lead, and through his proximity to men performing humanity’s most vaunted of tests, he produced a body of fiction that can serve collectively as a manual for understanding soldiers, terrain, and military -

Hemingway, a doctor, and Grace Hall-Hemingway, a musician and voice teacher. He had four sisters and a brother. Every summer, the family summered at the family cottage, named Windemere, on Walloon Lake near Petoskey (Mich.). After Ernest graduated from high school in June 1917, he joined the Missouri Home Guard. Before it was called to active duty, he served as a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Red Cross.
