Dear Parents / Carers,

Firstly, I hope you all have all had a restful break over the February half term. Please take the time to read through the following information about World Book day and our return to school on Monday 8th March 2021.

World Book day After much consideration we have decided to continue celebrating World Book day on Thursday 4th March to enable us to explore as many live streams and activities as possible. We are planning to spend 2 days immersing ourselves in favourite books, book characters, plots and fantastic literature. Our focus will be on texts by the author Julia Donaldson and each year group will be planning the learning around a different Julia Donaldson text. On Wednesday 3rd March, we will be holding a dressing up day. The children may come to school or dress up at home as their favourite storybook character. This coincides with our wellbeing live sessions, enabling the children to see each other in their outfits. We are hoping that the children can also show or talk about their favourite book. We are also hoping this will support in re-motivating our children after the half term break. As part of the day we will be launching our ‘reading in unusual places’ competition. What unusual places can you find to read? Take a picture and send it to the school office. Wherever you may be, remember to be fully clothed as we would like to share some of these on the school's newsletter. Teachers will add links on their blogs to stories, activities and World Book Day events for those 2 days. Have fun planning your outfits!

Re-opening after National Lockdown

Following the Government announcement on Monday 22nd February regarding the continuing Coronavirus Pandemic, Primary schools and Early Years settings in Woking will re-open on Monday 8th March 2021.

This means from us, here at The Horsell Village School, we look forward to welcoming ALL children back on Monday 8th March 2021

We will continue to provide our full remote learning offer until Monday 8th March 2021. Please continue to access this daily. We look forward to seeing all your wonderful work. You have done incredibly well with your home learning over the last 6 weeks. I know myself and everyone here at school are incredibly proud of what you have achieved.

The safety of the children, parents and staff has and will continue to be the most important factor as we move forward into our next phase of school reopening.

Please take the time to re-familarise yourself with all the information regarding what school will look like and the systems and measures we have in place to ensure the safest possible return for all our children. You will find that some of this information is the same as before, however some sections have changed.

Attendance from 8th March 2021 From Monday 8th March all children are expected to return. This means they are expected to attend everyday unless they are unwell or the class bubble in which they are in has been asked to self-isolate. Should you have any concerns about this return, please continue to openly discuss them with the school.

Staggered Starts and finishes. In order to make the start and the finish of the day as safe as possible for the children and for yourselves we will continue with staggered times. This enables the school to limit the number of additional adults on the school sites as these ‘crunch’ times. Obviously, we are all human and things can happen. If you find yourself running late, please wait until after the final slot of 9.00am before entering the school premises.

• Try and stick to your allocated time as much as possible. • Continue to use the one- way system • Continue to wear a face mask whilst on site unless you are medically exempt.

To limit adults on the premises we ask that Please enter through you operate a one adult only drop off and the front side gate. pick up policy. If you can, please leave siblings at home. Unfortunately, we will not be able to allow adults or siblings into the school or on any of the outside equipment.

You will need to enter through the front side gate. Mrs Reeve or a member of the Steering Group will be outside to guide you. You may be asked to wait on the street Follow the signs round at a social distance so we can manage to your allocated door. the flow onto the school premises.

If you have any messages for your child’s teacher please contact the school office via Follow the one-way signs around the playground telephone or email. We will make sure that these messages are passed on. This will aid a ‘quick’ drop off and pick up.

Please read the timetable below carefully as this will explain your child’s / children’s start and end times as well as the door in which they will be entering and leaving. The one-way system around school will continue.

Children across the school with a sibling are welcome to drop all their children at the same time however you will need to pick each child up at their allocated time to allow for the full teaching day to take place.

What will learning look like? We will continue to operate a bubble system. Your child will be in a class bubble of 30 with a teacher and teaching assistant in the morning and the class teacher in the afternoon for KS1 and the class teacher and teaching assistant all day in Foundation Stage. Measures to help mitigate the risk in the classroom and outside are: • Each class bubble will have an allocated outside area. This will be used for outside learning and playtimes. Children will not be able to cross into other class bubble areas. • Each class bubble will have allocated resources to use outside. These are cleaned frequently throughout the day and are not shared with any other bubble unless they have been in isolation for 48 hours. • In Year 1 and Year 2 each child will have a set place to work at when learning at tables. This does not mean they will spend their day sat at a table- this is not how we do our learning here at The Horsell Village School, it is simply a named place to sit when inside. The tables will be grouped as normal, however, where possible children will not be sat face to face. email: [email protected] Website: www.horsell-village.surrey.sch.uk The Horsell Village School is part of The SWAN Trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee and registered in England and Wales with company number 08622047. These will be cleaned regularly and will not be shared with other class bubbles. • PE will happen outside. On the days your child has PE they will be asked to come to school in their PE kit.

To reassure you we will be teaching in the same way we always have done. Outside learning has always played a significant part of our school day and we will continue to teach through our Enquiry and Investigation approach. We want to make school as normal as possible whilst being as safe as we can. During the first few weeks back at school we will focus on re-establishing expectations and routines as well as focusing on the mental well-being of all our pupils. Teachers will continue to do what they have always done- responding to the needs of the pupils. Please do not worry about where your child is academically at this stage.

Well-being afternoons. We know the biggest impact on children during lockdowns has been socially and emotionally. To support the re-establishment of the many skills associated with children’s social and emotional development we have planned in “a weekly well-being afternoon” Of course, this doesn’t mean that we are not focusing on the children’s mental health at other times- this is something that is interwoven into all aspects of school life. For the remaining weeks up to Easter and for the next week before we return on Monday 8th March on a Wednesday afternoon we will be encouraging all children and adults to disconnect from the computer and connect in activities that encourage social interactions, emotional responses and problem-solving skills. If you would like to, you can share what you do with your class teacher via Purple Mash.

Remote learning offer As school reopens to all children on Monday 8th March we have planned for different situations that may need you to access remote learning. Should a class bubble close as a result of a positive case (and the teacher is not unwell)- we will return to the offer used over the last few weeks. If the teacher is unwell we will endeavor as a school to provide the same level however this will be from a mixture of the senior leadership team. Should your child need to self-isolate as a result of a family member awaiting test results or receiving a positive Covid result you will receive a weekly planning overview which will have email: [email protected] Website: www.horsell-village.surrey.sch.uk The Horsell Village School is part of The SWAN Trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee and registered in England and Wales with company number 08622047. For both situations please continue to upload work / photographs to Purple Mash, where you child’s class teacher will provide feedback

What you can do at home to help prepare for the return Attached to this letter is a ‘Returning to school checklist’ that you can use with your child over the next few days. This will enable you to engage in conversation with them about their thoughts and feelings about returning to school. Should you find that your child has any particular worries about returning please ring the school office, where we will be able to help you. During reflections next week we will spend some time reading social stories to remind children what school is like and the measures we have in place to keep them safe. Over the next week we recommend re-establishing bedtime and morning routines so Monday runs as smoothly and peacefully as possible.

Uniform We expect all children to return to their normal school uniform. However, we are fully aware that children will have grown over this period of lockdown. If you find your uniform no longer fits please let us know as we may have second hand alternatives at school. If your child’s shoes do not fit please try and send your child to school in alternative black foot wear.

Wrap-around care Breakfast Club We have been in discussion with Nathan Tapley from the Breakfast Club to look at ways in which we can support our working parents. Breakfast Club for children at The Horsell Village School will continue to be held in our school hall from Monday 8th March. To find out more please contact Nathan at ntsports.co.uk Spaces are available.

Horsell Village After School Club We have also been in discussion with Horsell Village After School Club and how we can support them to provide after school care in the safest possible way as well as possibly support them to increase in numbers. Please contact the after-school club on 07760342139 or visit their website www.hvasc.co.uk

We will be working closely together with both clubs to ensure that our school-based bubbles will be reflected to help mitigate the risks.

Looking a-head……. Please find attached term dates for 2021-2022.

Please may we ask that you are considerate of your actions outside of school. We cannot police this and nor would we want to. However, we polity request that you continue to follow government guidelines and minimise your contact with other people.

Please continue to support the school in ensuring we are doing everything we can in order to keep our doors open and everyone as safe as we possibly can.

Best Wishes

Mrs Reeve
