  • Homer's Helen and Bai Juyi's Yuhuan: Beauty, Subjectivity, And
Homer’s Helen and Bai Juyi’s Yuhuan: Beauty, Subjectivity, and Ethics By Suiyun Pan (David) Honors Thesis Department of English and Comparative Literature University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill 2020 Approved: ____________________________________________ Abstract A beautiful woman, in the history and literature of ancient Greece and ancient China, is often presented as a controversial figure who can initiate dramatic events. On the one hand, people enjoy and praise her beauty. On the other hand, these same appreciators may blame the beautiful woman for morally corrupting them and generating chaos—even when such chaos is the product of the decisions and conduct of men. The mysterious Greek composer Homer and the renowned Chinese poet Bai Juyi are not ignorant of the unfair treatment of women in their societies. Throughout his Iliad and Odyssey, Homer reconsiders the reputation of his beautiful yet infamous heroine, Helen. As the poet shows a great interest in Helen’s morality and sociality, criticism of this “war-causing” beauty is called into question. Likewise, in “Song of Everlasting Regret,” Bai Juyi demonstrates the goodness of Yang Yuhuan, a “troublemaking” royal concubine in Tang China. Going even further than Homer, Bai is concerned with Yuhuan’s self- awareness and subjectivity. Nevertheless, neither Homer’s epics nor Bai’s poem should be interpreted as a feminist corrective to legend and history. Both poets redefine their beauties in ways that ultimately canonize the literary exploitation of women. Introduction When introduced to the western world, Yang Yuhuan 楊玉環 (719-756 CE), also known as Yang Guifei, Precious Concubine Yang, or Imperial Consort Yang, is often referred to as “the Chinese Helen of Troy.” We compare Yuhuan to Helen not only for the similarities of their beautiful appearance and romantic experiences, but also for the similar role they played in each of the empires that immortalized them—ancient China and ancient Greece, respectively.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE FEMALE CHINESE COMMUNIST LEADERS AND THE QUESTION OF GENDER EQUALITY MARLANA BOSLEY SPRING 2017 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Chinese with honors in Chinese Reviewed and approved* by the following: Kate Merkel-Hess Assistant Professor of History and Asian Studies Thesis Supervisor Nicolai Volland Assistant Professor in Asian Studies and Comparative Literature Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College i ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the tensions between women's liberation and class warfare through the perspectives of several prominent female leaders in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and also to push further to attempt to provide insight into how these women themselves reconciled these tensions. It has generally been argued that the discrepancy between the reality of gender equality and the policy goals of the CCP were due to prioritization of party agenda and the avoidance of alienating poor rural men who served the party’s base. Traditionally, it is argued that this is what estranged female CCP members. Therefore, women within the party, it is often assumed, were in direct opposition to this prioritization. However, while this is a factor, my research demonstrates that this relationship was much more nuanced than is often presented. In fact, many female members decided to remain within the party and supported its goals despite gender equality being consistently compromised. To ignore this reality and the decisions many women within the CCP made would silence their voices and paint an over-simplified picture of their experiences.

Hong, Zijie or Ang, Tau Kiet (1864–1936) BRUCE W. LO Bruce W. Lo is the ESDA assistant editor for the Northern Asia-Pacific Division. Hong, Zijie (???), also known as Ang Tau Kiet, was the second indigenous Chinese Seventh-day Adventist minister ordained in China. He pioneered Adventism in the southeastern China region of Guangdong and Fujian. Hong, Jizie is the pinyin of his Chinese name, while Ang, Tau Kiet is the romanization of his Chinese name in his native dialect of Chaozhou (??). Therefore, early Adventist publications often referred to him as Ang, Tau Kiet. Hong was born in 1864 in the village of Peh-tah (?? Baita). Before his conversion to Christianity, he was a county official near Shantao (?? Swatow) in the province of Guangdong. Early in life, he joined the Baptist Church and became an ordained elder in charge of an independent Baptist congregation in the town of Chiao-on in eastern Guangdong.1 Through his contact with Guo Ziying, Hong became interested in the Adventist message. According to Hong's family,2 Guo learned about the Sabbath from Timothy Zheng, another Adventist from Singapore, and Guo himself decided to travel to Guangzhou to consult with J. N. Anderson to find out about the Sabbath doctrine. When his boat stopped at Shantao, Guo went ashore to have a look around. Hong and Guo met and started discussing the Sabbath. Hong was not interested initially, as he always had thought that Sunday was the Sabbath and believed that he could prove it from the Bible.
