Summer Programming 2016

The Van Buren Recreation Department would like to welcome you to the summer season of 2016! The programs are all free for Van Buren, Hamlin and Cyr Plantation residents and $10 for non­residents to participate in any of our daily programs.

CAMPS

Tennis Camp Grades K­4, 5­8 ​ July 11­ July 14 Location: Tennis Courts at VBDSS Time: 5­8 Session 1 8:00­9:30 K­4 Session 2 9:30­11:00

This four­day camp offers the basic skills of tennis. These skills include multiple grips, volleying, serving, scoring, singles play and doubles play, just to name a few. Players are encouraged to bring their own rackets, but some can be provided.

Soccer Camp Grades K­4, 5­8 July 18­21 Location: Lower Soccer Field at VBDSS Time: 5­8 Session 1 8:00­9:30 K­4 Session 2 9:30­11:00

Join us for a four­day soccer camp. At the camp we will be learning basic soccer skills, teamwork, and having fun! Players will need to bring shin guards and water bottles. This event will take place rain or shine. If it rains, we will be inside. So please bring appropriate shoes. Mouthguards are highly recommended. Camp Grades K­4, 5­8 July 25­28 Location: Elementary Gym Time: 5­8 Session 1 8:00­9:30 K­4 Session 2 9:30­11:00

Want to learn some dribbling moves? Want to learn proper defensive positioning? How about proper shooting form? Come join the Rec. Dept. at this weeklong camp! The camp will include drills, fun games, and some competitive games! Please wear proper clothing and non­marking sneakers.

FRIDAY FIELD TRIPS

Swimming Trips Ages 7 and up Location: Mapleton Outdoor Pool Time: Bus departs at 12:30 Students will swim from 2:00­4:00 Bus will return approximately by 5:30 Dates: July 1, August 5

The Van Buren Rec. Dept. is teaming up with the Mapleton Rec. Dept. to offer a couple swimming trips! Children ages 7 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult, and we must adhere to all of Mapleton’s pool rules. Spots are going fast, so sign up quick!

Hiking Grades 5­8 Location: Aroostook State Park Mountain Date and Time: July 8 at 9:00­1:00 Bus Departs at 7:45 Returns at 2:15

What better way to get outside and enjoy the weather than hiking? Bring some water, comfortable shoes (no flip­flops or sandals) and an adventurous attitude!

Disc Golf Grades 5­8 Location: Maple Ridge Disc Golf Course Date and Time: July 22 Bus departs at 7:45 Bus returns at 1:15

Have you ever wanted to play golf but can’t swing the club? Try this alternative! Disc golf is a fun way to play golf! By using Frisbees, you try to get to the hole by using the smallest number of throws! It is a great workout and tons of fun! We will meet at the side of the school by the elementary gym.

SUMMER LONG ACTIVITIES

Arts & Crafts Grades K­5 Location: Dates & Times: July 1­July 29 Fridays Grades K­5 9:00­10:00

Do you have an artsy side? Children in Kindergarten through 5th ​ grade can join us to learn some drawing techniques and painting techniques and make some fun crafts!

Tennis Lessons Grades K­4, 5­8 Location: Tennis courts Dates & Times: June 27­ July 27 Mondays & Wednesdays Gr. K­4: 11:30­12:30 Gr. 5­8: 12:30­2:00

Come to the tennis courts for tennis lessons twice a week! Please bring your own rackets if you have them, rackets can be provided if needed. **There will not be Tennis Lessons the week of Tennis Camp**

Major League Ages 10­12 (as of May 1st) Location: Baseball field Dates and Times: June 15­ July 28 Practices are Monday Wednesday and Fridays 5:30­7:00

Boys and girls ages 10­12 are welcome to come and play little league baseball! It is a great place to reinforce the fundamentals of baseball, learn some more advanced techniques, and get the chance to play other towns! Schedules will be released at the first practice!

Minor League Baseball Ages 7­9 (as of May 1st) Location: Baseball field Dates and Times: June 14­ July 31 Practices start 5:30­7:00

Boys and girls ages 7­9 are welcome to come and play Coach Pitch baseball! You will be learning the fundamentals of baseball, some basic techniques, and get the chance to play other towns! Schedules will be released at the first practice!

T­Ball Ages 4­6 Location: Baseball Field Dates: Tuesday’s and Thursday’s 11:30­12:30 Starting June 30

Boys and girls ages 4­6 that are interested in learning about baseball are invited to join us at the baseball field! Participants will be learning about hitting, throwing and catching, and baserunning! It is a great way to learn the game of baseball!

Capture The Flag Grades 4­8 Location: Behind the School Dates and Times: July 5­July 26 Tuesdays 2:30­3:30

Enjoy a few games of Capture the Flag! Flag Grades 5­8 Location: Upper Soccer Field Dates and Times: July 7­July 28 Thursday’s 12:30­2:00

Do you want to play some football? Come enjoy an hour and a half of with us! No equipment necessary!

Van Buren Runners All Ages Location: Meet at the front of the school Time and Dates: TBD This is a new program built for kids wanting to increase their endurance. It will include walking/jogging 2 days a week with an emphasis on building stamina rather than speed! Starting off at 1 mile (half a mile out and half a mile back) and building up from there!

Come enjoy a hot dog BBQ to kick off the summer! There will be equipment available to use the outdoor basketball court and games too! ​

MRPA Track and Field Meet Only for Qualifying Participants June 28 Time TBD Located at the Caribou Track (By the high school)

Water Games Grades K­5 Location: Soccer Field Date and Time: July 29 12:00­1:00

Kids grades K­5 are invited to our first Water Games! They will be games with water balloons, water guns, and a ton of fun! Great for a warm day!

Field Day Ages: K­8 Location: Lower Soccer Field Date: August 1 12:00­2:00

Come join us in a field day event! We will be having potato sack races, three­legged races, egg toss, tug­of­war and other games!

Survival Day Grades 5­12 Location: At Rec Center Date: Aug 2 12:00­2:00

Interested in learning how to set up a tent, how to make a campfire, and how to give basic first aid? Join us and Peter LaPlante to come learn at the Rec. Center!

Kite Day ​ All Ages Location: Top Soccer field Date: Aug 3 12:00­1:30

Weather permitting (we need some wind!!), the Van Buren Rec. Dept. welcomes you to bring your kite to the soccer field and enjoy a fun afternoon of flying kites!

County Fun Day Ages 7­12 Location: Birch Point, Madawaska Date: Aug 4 Time: 10:00­2:00 Departure time: 8:30 Returning time: 3:30

Take the bus with us to Birch Point, Madawaska, ME and enjoy an afternoon of swimming in the lake, , jump houses, kayaking, a grilled lunch, entertainment, and more! Must be 7 years or older to come. Registration deadline is July 22.

Summer School Schedule **Any child participating in Summer School must participate in the program for that day. We will not have staff available to supervise the kids not wanting to participate in scheduled activities. Parents or guardians MUST pick up child if they choose not to/do not want to participate.

Rainy Day Activities

Most of our activities will be located outside, but in case of rainy days, we can bring some inside! Here is a list of activities that we can do but aren’t limited to:
